Meaty G-Fan Gaming w/lots of modes and monsters

Atari has proven themselves adept at making Godzilla games as Destroy All Monsters proved. The unlockable and combat elements of the older title make it my sons favorite game to this day. What this game Godzilla Unleashed adds is a story mode (with voice over and cutscenes) as well as faction meters to the gameplay, making the combinations of monster on monster mayhem endless. The graphics are updated and look good enough(Wii).Ultimately all of the extra trimmings besides the new monsters don't add up to much but the extra options, play modes, and reward system don't hinder the game either. The fun starts when you finally reach Tokyo in story mode and you see what the game has up its sleeve, depending on which monster you are playing as and which scenario you have picked from the occasionally branching story you will encounter new challenges and new monsters which you decide how and where to battle. The controls for me after a very frustrating 1st session became second nature and I prefer them over the PS2 versions which handle nicely as well. Bottome line here is you know whether this game strikes your anvil or not and the real decision is which system to buy it for, if you can get used to the Wii controls I think you will find them more responsive and smoother(eventually). My 7 year old still prefers Melee with its old GCN controls, but I'll take the chaotic story mode of Unleased w/ Wii controls as it becomes much more rewarding as you progress. The fun is somewhat dampened by the need to unlock your favorite monsters for the multiplayer brawls but the single player romp is well made and worth playing through with multiple monsters anyway. Godzilla + Wii = Fun Fun Fun

This game is a perfect choice for Godzilla fans and hardcore Wii players alike. The characters are well-chosen, well-designed and reasonably available.

The graphics are stupendous, a real highlight of the game. The colors and sounds are practically exploding off the screen.

Whoever thought of making Godzilla for the Wii is a genius!

Controls are in need of fine-tuning

Atari's release of 'Godzilla Unleashed,' for the Nintendo Wii is a title that would've been better served had it been held back for release an additional month in order to fine-tune and smooth out the controls. At its core, this title is basically a fighting/wrestling action game - which is why the non-intuitive and oftentimes unresponsive Wii controls are unacceptable for this style of gameplay. Thankfully, the game does start off with a much needed tutorial to guide players along in the somewhat complex control scheme but alas most will find themselves resorting to the good ol' button-mash method of gameplay to progress through the 20 or so levels. Other disappointments include a very poor camera, vague level objectives as well as tired and uninspiring graphics throughout. All is not lost though, the storyline actually held my interest to finish the single player campaign all the way through. While the story itself is extremely cheesy with bad voice acting I suppose such a tone fits in very well as a homage to a series beloved for its kitsch factor. All in all you're either gonna find this game acceptable or not. Perhaps a rental beforehand would be most prudent.

Great graphics, lots of suspense - but not for little kids

All in all this is a fun game; however, I would not recommend the game for young kids - the lizard is just too scary especially before bedtime!

Great moves, great graphics - keeps you interested. Fun for the family including the older kids.

not an 'enjoyable' game

this game really isn't that much different from other 'fighting' games I've seen - aside from the fact that there are lots of 'monsters' to be fighting.

The main thing I didn't like however was that after only 10 minutes of playing my son was so frustrated the controller was spiked off the floor, he's yelling obsenities, and crying. This is a game that he was looking forward too and for whatever reason could not get the hang of the battles and was very frustrated.

The graphics are good - even I enjoyed watched the monsters maneuver about but otherwise I really didn't see anything about this one to get overexcited about.

Another Wii game that fails to take full advantage of the great Wii interface

When I first saw this game I immediately thought, "Cool, it looks like the old game Rampage." That, combined with the Wii controls, caused me to think that I was in for a certain kind of experience. Unfortunately, I was a bit disappointed.

The controls for this game are not as intuitive as I had hoped. It feels like they didn't put a lot of thought into adapting the game specifically for Wii users. (I'd say that for many Wii games actually - although I really love the Wii overall.)

I can't say too much about the extended game play. This one left me cold right out of the gate so I didn't play it that much at all. Again, because I was expecting to pick up the controls and feel like I was really moving Godzilla around, knocking down buildings and fighting other monsters. I honestly would have had more fun playing Rampage.

Video gamers have tended to be under 25. The Wii changed the market and expanded to people of all ages. I'm older than 25 so my expectations for the controls was likely a lot higher than someone who's used the PS3 or Xbox. To them this game might actually be far too simple.

I'm passing this one along to my teenage nephew. If his opinion is much different than mine I'll post an edit to this review.

Not for the casual gamer, but great graphics

I'm typical of a lot of Wii users in that I'm a somewhat casual game player and not particularly skilled when it comes to games that have zillions of control combinations. I like games that don't require perfect reflexes and accuracy in order to complete them (or at least get a good way in), and thankfully most Wii games do fit this mold. I was surprised therefore at how much trouble I've had getting competent with this game. Granted, I've not played this kind of combat game before, but I find it really difficult to successfully get through even the earlier tasks in the game. There's no difficulty level so you can't start as a "beginner" and have some success while building skill, you basically just get beat up over and over while trying to figure out what you are doing wrong. Having said that, the graphics are pretty good for a Wii game (i.e. nothing that will awe people, but reasonably realistic) and the monsters and their various combat moves nicely varied. I'll keep working at it, and hopefully I'll get more skilled at it, but if you are a casual player like me, you might want to look at other games that are more suited for various levels of players.

True Godzilla fans may appreciate it more

Overall, this is not really a bad game. The graphics are very nice. Sharp, crisp, clean and clear. However, if you are looking at this game to have a deep and engaging story mode... then you may want to look for a different game. The story mode, at least to me, was very flat and uninteresting.

I think the appeal of this game will be in two areas.

1 - Hard core Godzilla fans will no doubt love the inclusion of all the different monsters and unlockables. Personally, being only a casual Goddzilla fan, many of those things are no doubt lost on me. I only recognize a handful of monsters so that draw for me is lessened.

2 - the multi-player aspect has the feel of being a blast. Up to four people can have an all out brawl, or destroy as many buildings as you can. Kind of akin to the old Rampage video game.

One thing that frustrated me was the length of the battles. Most "traditional" fighters have a minute to a minute and a half length on 'rounds'. Not so here. You can easily hit the five minute mark for one battle, which at times, makes you lose interest in the battle and the game.

While there are some fun aspects to the game, the controls (especially later in the game) become hampering and frustrating. As a multi player it is fun, as a single player... not so much. I don't think I would pay full price for it, probably best to hold off until you see it in the bargin bin.

Couldn't quite follow it

Godzilla Unleashed is a bit uneven. While the game is fun in the fashion of "Mortal Combat" and the old arcade game "Rampage" it isn't something that I would classify as a must have.

The combat in "Godzilla Unleashed" is a bit of a challenge. This is one game where the Wii remote only works marginally. It could be that I haven't put enough hours into the game to have it mastered, but it seems that I am able to do the correct move about 50% of the time.

The story line... maybe I am too old (32) but I had no idea what the point is to the game. The only thing that I could figure out is that there are good monsters and bad monsters. At times the good monsters will help you at other times they will attack you. I think if I understood the plot a little better than game would be more enjoyable.

My wife has concerns that the game is too violent and should rated stricter than "T", but "Godzilla Unleashed" does not show any blood nor does it use realistic types of weapons so I feel that the "T' is probably correct.

One area that would make the game much more enjoyable is if you were up against friends. Again, this would make the game more like "Mortal Combat" and less like Godzilla, but it could turn into a fun party game. If you happen to be a big fan of "Godzilla" games my guess is that you could follow the storyline and the game would be loads of fun!
