Mario Kart DS is one of the "killer apps" for the Nintendo DS, and for good reason. It is one of those games that show off exactly how much fun the unique little system can be. Using the classic Mario Kart franchise, the game utilizes everything from the dual screens to the microphone to the multi-player and online support available with the DS. Far from simply a demonstration of the impressive hand-held system, though, it is also a terrific game in its own right.
The game follows the formula made popular by the long-running Mario Kart series. It uses characters from the Super Mario Brothers franchise and puts them through a series of go-cart races with tracks that resemble levels of the various Mario games. The tracks themselves are a lot of fun, but more fun is the ability to sabotage your opponent using tricks and traps like banana peels that make them skid out or koopa shells that you can use to knock the opponent in front of you out of the lead. In addition, the game has several alternate modes, including challenge levels and a balloon battle where your goal is to knock all the balloons off of an opponent's cart. The race, balloon battle, and shine runner modes can all be played by up to eight people with or without extra copies of the game. Additionally, the wi-fi capabilities of the DS allow you to play online with people anywhere in the world, although this mode lacks a high degree of communication, making the online opponents feel very much like smarter versions of the computer AI.
In addition to sixteen new tracks, there are several tracks brought in from other Mario Kart games, making this version of Mario Kart a complete package that brings in both the past and present. Overall, this is an excellent game for both veterans and novices of the franchise. It's worth hours of fun on its own, and also does an excellent job of showing off how awesome the Nintendo DS can really be.

Nintendo seems to have a niche for creating games that are fun for all ages. Mario Kart DS is no exception. Except for the cramping in my right hand from extended playing, I really have no complaints about this game. There are a varity of modes of gameplay to keep you interested. I love the drifting and drafting abilities as well as the classic Mario Kart weapons. In Time Trial mode, you actually race against your best time, complete with a "ghost image" replay of your old race. This allows you to compete against yourself. In Battle Mode, the balloon battles are the best. The other battle is Shine Runners where you have to steal shines from other players. Grand Prix and Vs modes are where I tend to spend alot of my time, which is classic Mario Kart racing complete with the slinging of banana peels, turtle shells, and many other Mario weapons. The music and graphics are great, and some of the courses are a real pleasure to look at. I normally do not like driving games because I cannot seem to stay on the track. I picked up on Mario Kart DS quickly, and once I got down the art of drifting through turns, I was hooked. I recommend this game for all ages.

I bought this for my sister, and she enjoyed it so much that I had to see what it was about. And now we race and go against each other and the other characters. Great game for one or more people. Love it!

I got this game in 2005 and really liked it but, when I beat it, I thought it was short and easy. I don't play it very much now but I love the Wi-Fi! If you like Mario Kart and like the DS Wi-Fi, than you will like this game. Well, I think the Wi-Fi play is 5 star but, the only thing bad about the Wi-Fi is some people just quit in the middle of a race, But overall this is a great game!
Fun -- but could be better

I got this because of the great reviews and because I have enjoyed playing this game in the past. The game is a lot of fun. However, once you have played all the races (even the unlocked ones), it can get kinda boring after a while. I wish there more more races/characters to unlock for more variety. I finished the game in less than a week. Now I hardly play it anymore and am thinking of selling it since it's not as much fun anymore.
Great for Grown-ups Too

Just to add another perspective to the many reviews, I'm over fifty, and I've never played a racing game before -- or any of the classic Nintendo video games, for that matter. I bought this one only because of the high ratings and rave reviews. And I'm glad I did!
I've never been much into real-time games, frankly, but I've always liked having one around as a change of pace. Back when home computers were a novelty, I found the occasional Red Baron (a WWI flight sim) game refreshing after many hours of playing chess or turn-based games like Civilization.
That's just why I bought Mario Kart -- as a periodic change of pace from turn-based DS games like Advance Wars, Chessmaster, and Age of Empires. And it fills the bill perfectly. Maybe a little too perfectly, since Mario Kart is often my first choice nowadays.
I was worried that my aging reflexes might not be up to a game like this, but it turns out I can handle it. There are three speeds to choose from, and the slowest is challenging but quite manageable. I'll never master the game, but I can keep my cart on the track most of the time, and I've enjoyed my share of victories.
The race itself is spiced up with various items you can use to either enhance your own performance or interfere with your opponents' progress. And I find this a nice balance. You don't always have the speed or agility to win a straightforward race, but you can sometimes use the items to triumph anyway. Yeah, it's "dirty pool," but it's all in fun. And I think I'd probably lose interest in a straightforward racing game.
The variety of drivers, carts, and tracks (some of which have to be unlocked via skillful play) make for long-term enjoyment. This game does not soon get to where you feel it's the same thing over and over again. Some of the tracks are very challenging indeed, especially at higher speeds.
Anyhow, Mario Kart is lots of fun for young and old alike. One of the best purchases I've made for the DS. No regrets.

The ability for two or more kids to play from one game makes this a great addition to your Nintendo DS collection.
This if fun and family-friendly. I can't say anymore that hasn't already been said in the five-star reviews.
