best flight sim ever!!

MS Flight Sim 2004 is the best sim...ever made. The graphics are great (on my 2.4 ghz 512mb ram 64 mb geforce 4 mx card i can run it at 800x600 resulution with medium graphics). Its the most realistic sim ever made also. The only bad thing about this game is that it takes around 1 1/2 hours to install, and it takes up around 5 gigs of your hard drive. A joystick is reccomended so you dont have to mess around with the keyboard too much...the planes are almost impossible to fly with just a keyboard. It has over 20 flyable aircraft, including the Wright Brothers first plane. It also has more modern planes like cessnas and the 737,747,and 777. The learjet and 2 helicopters are also included. There are over 20,000 airports to fly to, anywhere in the world.

*WARNING* You should have at least double the minimum requirements to run this game. Just to see how it worked, I tried to run it on a computer that had the minimum requirements. It could load the game, but when i tried to fly i was getting about 3 framespersecond on average....on my machine (specs listed above) i can usally get 25 frames per second on a clear day...about 15 when the weather is cloudy.

This is a great game, and if you like flying, or want to become a pilot, get it!

Better than expected

I had the impression that FA2004 was not that big of a difference from FS2002. I was wrong. It is worth the upgrade. If you don't have it, get it.

This is great, just like flying

Running the 4th CD is easily overcome by a crack file freely available on the net. ATC intereaction is always a plus.

The game lacks some realism

Maybe I was too excited from all the hype, but I'm not too crazy about this game. The graphics seem like the games I played in the late 90's. Maybe it's the video card, I don't know. Besides that, you can take a Boeing 747 from 10,000 feet nose down into the ground and the plane will bounce like a dolphin at Seaworld. It would be nice if you clip a tree, you feel it. Instead, you go right through buildings and trees unscathed. I realize this game is not for crashing, but even in real life, there is such a thing as emergency or crash landings. Where is the risk of coming in for a landing too fast, if your just going to bounce like a tennis ball?

Absoloutly amazing!!!!

Just a great game! Cool starter for those who wish to learn more about the instruments in your favorite aircrafts.

Love it. Less taxing on your system than Flight Simulator X

My son Henry and I enjoy flight simulating together. Our last version was 2002, and the 2004 version is far superior. Most noticeable is an increase in the graphics quality of terrain and clouds/weather. The realism of 2004 is certainly acceptable, and is closer to "X" than to 2002.

More importantly, it runs acceptably (even nicely) on lower horsepower machines...I have it on a Sony laptop (1280x768, ~500MHz Pentium M, 512k RAM, XP SP2) with most sliders set to "high quality" (including bilinear anti-aliasing), and we get a pretty reliable 17-18 frames per second (fps). For us, that's a requirement for good control; lower than that and we both get frustrated.

By comparison, "X" on the same machine, with quality set mostly "Low", barely can get 10 fps. So, there's a big difference in performance.

In short, if you've got a machine of limited resources (especially the 3D graphics chip), stick with 2004. It's almost as good as "X", and you won't be frustrated with lower frame rates. Of course, if you've got a fancy new GPU from Nvidia, go for "X"; it's really great.

I take almost all of it back....

After spending the last two years scouring different flightsim sites and spending lots of dough, I finally got Microsoft's FS2002 looking pretty darn good. Took a lot of work, though. Now along comes a new installment that will force us all to upgrade as both freeware and payware developers start producing soley for FS2004. Keeps the money machine rolling, I guess.

On the bright side: The ATC is better. You can now switch from VFR to IFR in mid flight and choose which runway to land on. Some of the default planes are a step up with better textures and improved virtual cockpits. Sky and lighting effects are much, much nicer and, with a recent freeware set of modified textures, the wild blue yonder has never looked better. The updated weather engine is probably the best new feature. You can choose from several default weather situations without having to manually key in every cloud, temperature, and visibility layer. Even in these preset conditions, the weather changes dynamically. Otherwise, you can connect to the internet and get real-world weather updated into the sim every 15 minutes. Good stuff!

On the "is it really improved?" side: Ground and water textures are supposed to be better but I didn't see much improvement. In fact, when using the default water textures with effects enabled, the ocean looks clearer and bluer than any tropical paradise - almost like a big tub of bleach. The colors are completely off. Fortunately, a freeware add-on called OceanFx is available that actually makes the ocean look pretty darn good. As far as the ground goes, I didn't notice any real improvement. Same generic textures and bgl's worldwide that demand an expenditure of $$$ in terrain mesh, etc.. to look nice. Autogen buildings and trees are a bit better - especially with night lighting - but nothing to make me do cartwheels. As in FS2002, FS2000, etc.., some flight physics are still lacking. Microsoft has yet to capture that "real" feeling of flying that sims like X-Plane and Flight Unlimited have had for some time.

On the "bite me" side: These new volumetric clouds look very nice and have depth, unlike the 2D bitmaps in FS2002, but flying through or near one may very well turn FS2004 into a slide show if you don't have the proper hardware. (Namely a 3ghz+ computer) There seems to be no getting around the fact that too many 3d objects kill frame rates. My P4 1.9ghz, 512mb rambus, with Geforce 4 Ti4600 128mb can handle moderate cloud cover, but forget the heavy thunderstorms or overcast conditions. My major gripe, though, and the reason COF only gets 4 stars, is less backward compatibility with previous flightsim aircraft. With FS2002, you could plug practically any FS2000 (or FS98 plane for that matter) right in with no problems. COF is much more finicky, making a sizable number of my FS2002 aircraft useless. Shame on you, Microslop.

After dinking with COF for several days, now, I must admit that I can't go back to FS2002. The gorgeous sky, clouds, and planes combined with the ever-growing number of add-ons and enhancements makes COF the next logical step for flightsim enthusiasts - as long as they have the $$$.

A pain to install, but the most fun I've had in a while.

This game is great! I never upgraded to 2002, so i was working with 2000 for a few years. It was good, but nothing could ever compare it to FS2004. The only complaint I have is that for three days I counldn't get it to install on my system. If you get this problem too you should download DirectX 9.0b not 9.0a as it has bugs. Works great now though and is super smooth when it comes to graphics.
