Over all its an ok product. Personaly I do prefer the Airbus Fleet but its ok for what it sells for.

The simulator part is very accurate, or at least I think it is, because I know almost nothing about airplanes or flight, but the graphics are nothing like the box. Probably becuase you do have to download the new textures. It is very complicated for kids. On my system (XP) increasing the resolution messes up the menus. Also on this system, mountains and other scenery garble and blink. But, the plane models and cockpits are very realistic, and so are the clouds. Very in-depth, but sometimes difficult lessons. Overall, I suggest buying this game if you plan on taking some time to learn it (if you're new to flight sims).

For the first time flyers it may seem like a dream, but for the veterans of FS, it really isn't much but new ATC commands, better clouds and newer aircraft. Just as FS 2000 died out when FS 2002 was introduced, so will FS 2002 die out with the coming of FS 2004.
Although the game doesn't boast anything new, I would still buy this just so I can keep flying online with my buddies. Overall, nothing new, and the price is too high.
Think twice!

While the game is very detailed and realistic, the controls are VERY difficult for even an FPS-RTS player like myself to try. For example, when you press the left arrow key to turn left no matter how sensitively you press right or left again you can NEVER fly at level or straight again, there's little excitement in it, and the constant roar of the engine is an atrocious assault on your senses. If you think this game is like soaring through the great blue sky as free as a bird you are sadly mistaken. Even on the highest graphics settings, you're still just flying over a basically pixellated landscape with little variety. All the realism that goes into the physics and the controls and the geographical accuracy cannot make up for the fact that for a lot of people, this game will simply not be fun.
Disappointing

I was expecting more from a game as hyped up and expensive as this one. If you like MS FS, buy the older version and save the money. It is flat out rediculous that you cannot crash a plane in this game. Even a 747 at full throttle will do a loop without damage or crashing. Absolutely unrealistic. A joke !!! You can land a jet plane going 500 mph on any surface. It will just bounce off the surface until it come to a stand still, you also can take it off from there. Material obstacles are none......you just fly through them. I expect from a good flight simulator that doing the wrong thing and putting the plane "outside the envelope" has real consequences for the game i.e. you crash or damage the plane. Also it is disappointing how "buggy" the game still is...flickering screen and vanishing text and picures when scrolling. This game is not what I would expect from MS. Selling mine after only one day.........
Great teacher

This game is awesome. It is realistic. The guy who said he couldnt crash didnt look at the realism settings. Everyone who complained about the requirements is right. I had 500 mhz and 128 ram and 8mb graphics card. It worked terribly untill i got a new computer. 2.66ghz,512ram, and 128 graphics card. It works great. A better computer wouldnt do much better. Triple the minimum requirements and if your computer doesnt make it dont buy fs2004. With this simulator, not a game, you can downdload other planes off simviation.com. You better have a joystick if you are going to play this game. It just need to have a throtle. The new aircrafts are annoyings but this game is still great.

Although the number of airports and aircraft have increased I started with Flight Simulator 3 on floppy disk. In typical Microsoft fashion many features which were available then have since been dropped or changed. No opportunity for instance to design your own aircraft and in a version that sports the Wright Brothers machine! Its typical of Microsoft which dropped the capability in its BASIC interpreter to input variables and equations instead of only constants. A built-in combat theater and aircraft as was in verions 3 and 4 - GONE! Other neat features - GONE as well!
The use of dials and switches superimposed upon a photo of an instrument panel, however is still there. Flipping photos of toggle switches, knobs, etc. - still there. But you do get streaming video flight instruction and this is what saves the day. Except for excessive humor (they want flying to be fun) the instructors are top notch. If you can't relate to their style then tuff luck. Microsoft provides no alternative as it does with Clipit, MS Word's Help Assistant.
Forget the details, squint and pretend like you're in a real simulator... err... plane. Scenery is not the object here but rather learning about flight and what it can do for you. Its well worth the price for beginners and novices alike if they want to learn to fly in the context of a game. Perhaps a stepping stone to the real thing.
Still I miss all of the features Microsoft dropped or changed over the years and failed to replace. Maybe Abacus add ons will help ease the pain.
Recommend this over FSX

I purchased this after buying FSX and was unable to even install FSX on my computer. I had been using an older version of Flight Simulator so FS2004 was still an upgrade. I am so happy that I went with the 2004 version. First, it was quick and easy to install. I did not have any problems at all. Second, I was able to find lots of add-ins (scenery, airplanes, etc...) to make the experience even better. I have noticed a ton of improvements over earlier version and my 2 year old computer has not problem running the graphics.
Very relaxing game. UNTIL YOU CRASH AAAAAAHHH!!!!

Great way to spend a Saturday night (ok..I'm married...not a nerd..well...a little nerdy). I used to love to shoot things down and enjoy more arcade style action. Now in my old age...let me just ease forward on the throttle, bring the nose up, adjust the flaps...and look out the window. Looking forward to adding 2 more flat screens and track-ir for head tracking! Then I'll be really flying and my wife will still be rolling her eyes. Great game.
