ADDICTIVE GAME!

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 17 / 18

I have Madden 2000 and have played 2001 many times and the game itself hasn't improved much. But maybe they kept it the same because that's what has made Madden so successful in the past.

Graphics-5.0
The Instant Replays are amazing! It seems like you're watching a real game. The coaches on the sideline look exactly the same as they do in real life and the crowd is actually people instead of a blob of colors.

Sound-4.0
I would think they'd put more commentary lines in 2002. But it has been a week and a half and I'm already hearing repeats. I like summerall and madden's commentary over anyone else's though. Its just tht they sometime make mistakes. Ex. Schleishnger ran for a first down when i was playing and madden says "that james stewart is one good runner." ????

Control-4.5
Nothing wrong here. Its just a little hard to navigate through the screens with the analog stick. I suggest using the d-pad for the mode screens and the analog stick for the games.

Fun Factor-4.5
The only reason why this isnt a 5 is because the game takes up a whole memory card for season or franchise mode. that sucks because i have other games and only one memory card. What makes this so fun is that you can create your own team-choose their name, logo, stadium conditions, and jersey colors. Then you can enter them into your league as an expansion team!

Overall this really is a 4.5 but the amazon people don allow that. Madden still beats out competitors and is a must buy.

Still the best...

I had the pleasure of attending E3 (friends in low places) and one of the first games I wanted to get my hands on was Madden 2002. As I walked into the main display floor the first thing I saw was the EA booth and there, side-by-side on three plasma screens, was Madden on Playstation 2, X-Box and Gamecube. So, it was easy to compare the three versions of the game on three different platforms. The first thing that jumped out was the attention to detail. The players, the stadiums, the lighting effects, the sounds and the animations were all incredible. Player movements were very smooth in all phases of the game. There was so much detail in the player models that you could identify players by the way they moved. The video game version of Chris Carter actually moved like the real one. In terms of control and gameplay, I walked right up to the Gamecube version of the game and started completing passes almost immediately. It's very easy to navigate, but it also has enough play options to keep you inside your house for months. You have to get this game!

Amazing game, but memory card issues...

the game is incredible. having played the cube version and PS2, id say the cube version is slightly better; slightly more realisitc graphics, a little better game play. the only downfall of madden is that it takes up an entire memory card. since franchising is such a huge part of the game, you really should have 2 memory cards; one for madden, and one for the rest of your games. hope this is helpful. happy holidays!

A amazing game!

I had never played a great football game until early January 2002. I thought I did, but I didn't. Nope, Madden 2002 beats all of them by quite a bit.

Graphics: 10/10

Okay, so I admit it, these graphics are the best. They beat plenty of other Gamecube games.

Controls: 10/10

Here, I can find problems with Madden 2002 for many systems.

XBOX: White button? Why not the left trigger.
PS2: The controller is pretty bad at this.
PS: Same as PS2
N64: Not too many here but, it's not as good as the Cubes.
GAMECUBE: NO PROBLEMS!

Speed: 8/10

The only Gamecube game I have played with loading times. (They are short.) Oh well.

Sound: 9/10

The music is awesome, but those announcers (esspecially the lady) can get annoying.

Gameplay 10/10

This is what it comes down to. Is it fun? Yes. It has tons of amazing modes plus great football you won't find in Blitz or QB Club. Get it... NOW!

Perfect Football game for Gamecube!

We all know the 2 kinds of football games. Theres NFL Blitz where players fly across the field, beat [each other up], and the football is the size of there heads, then theres Madden. The great thing about madden is that it's simply realistic. Real physics, real penaltys, a player can get injured. Plus, get this, you can challenge calls. I have never used this option before. It's great!

What makes Madden unbeleivble is it's awesome "Instant Replay" option. You can see the entire field, with the abilility to move, turn and zoom freely. You can choose EAsy mode (Get it, EAsy for EA sports. Heh, heh) and Normal. Also you may select Madden Cards (Which is cool feature) or training. During the game you can get points for completing certain goals (i.e, making a 30 yard pass, intercepting, sacking the QB making 3 tackels with one player, a 30 yard field goal, etc) Not to forget the ability to turn penalties on, or decrease there size. With a create-a-team option or God-like players (On the Ecko team) Gameplay gets 10/10.

The graphics don't get much better. With details on every player, coach and referee, it's amazing. Instant Replay's aren't grainy or choppy, they look perfect. There is absolutly nothing wrong with the graphics. It gets a perfect 10/10.

Because it's EA you know that the commentary will be great. John Madden cracks me up with his little sayings he quotes. Not to mention you can hear the announcer say funny phrases. Such as, once, I cleary heard him say "Would the owner of a blue jeep cherokee, liscene 767-EXE please report to the parking lot? You're vehicle is on fire." What's wrong with it? Well, either i'm havinh Deja Vu, or the people say the same things maybe 3 times per game. After a while it gets boring because the don't say new things. With a small subtraction because of repetition, the sound receives a 8/10.

Speed? Well, let me just say I wasn't happy. Unlike other Gamecube games, which load within 5 or 10 seconds, Madden takes 30-35 seconds. It's worth it in the end though! Unfortunatly, I have to nail the speed by giving it a harsh 7/10.

Controls are amazing. It just makes perfect sense! When the ball is snapped, you will see an A,B,X,R or L over certain players heads. (During Normal mode you must press "A" first) Just press the corresponding button and the QB will pass. X is spin. Y is jump. C-stick in stiff arms. B is dive. It just makes perfect sense. A 10/10 is definitly fair for this element.

Replay ... well DUH! I'm not going to buy a Football game and play it once. I think all sports game need to have a 10/10 for replay or they just aren't worth buying. So, of course, Madden 2002 gets a 10/10

As you can see, if you're going to get a Football game, get Madden. Let's review:
Gameplay: 10/10
Graphics: 10/10
Sound: 8/10
Speed: 7/10
Controls: 10/10
Replay value: 10/10
Total: 55/60 giving Madden 2002 a 91.67

Cheats
There are no real cheats. Some Easter Eggs, like special Holiday Commentary, and a few cheats, like maximum player stat points, add to the game. I'll give it a +2

Madden 2002's new score is a 93.67

This is a really great football game. It has it all from stats from every player in the NFL to celebrating after a one handed diving touchdown pass form 90 yards out. If you like football games and your a fan of Madden style football then this is a game you sholdent be without trust me. (this is from my expereance with the game no one paid me to write this)

Best one yet!

I've been playing the Madden series for as long as I can remember (I think the first one was 1993) and this is by far the best one. The graphics and game play are great and you can create your own players, coaches, teams, etc. For those of you who have played Madden before, it's pretty much what you've grown to expect and love. But if you are new to the Madden franchise and are a football fan, I highly recommend this game.

The gamecube version looks very similar to Madden 2001 on PS2, with very realistic body movements and crisp and clean graphics. The stadiums are rendered nicely and the players don't have that zombie look from the last one anymore. However, I've noticed the framerate slowing up a little here and there, but it's usually after the play is over. Nothing big to nit-pick in the graphics dept.

If you are used to Sony Playstation, it will probably take a little while to become familiar with the controller. Other than that, I'd say the game play is fine. The buttons make sense but you can change the settings if you need to.

The AI is okay, especially on higher levels, but when going head to head with your friends it is very easy to just launch bombs and score. The scoring in 5 minute quarters can end up pretty high. There are still some bread and butter plays when going against the CPU, but as always, you need to mix them up or it'll catch on. The one thing that I find wrong here is that I keep getting my RB (or WR) tackled from behind by a lineman. I've only had one run over 40 yards because I always get caught from behind. It's annoying.

The main difference that I can see between 2001 and 2002 is being able to use the Houston Texans. It's a pretty cool concept in the franchise mode because you get to build from the ground up and draft every single position. It's definitely worth the time it takes when you start winning games. Make up a coach, make up some players, choose a playbook and see how good of a GM you are as well.

My only real problem with Madden 2002 is the repetitive commentary. It really becomes monotonous after the first few games, and I ended up turning the sound down and playing a CD instead. Madden even uses a lot of sayings from the old versions - most of which are not insightful in the least. They really could've used a bigger soundtrack and I hope they do in the future.

All in all, if you are a football fan you'll love this game. It looks and plays great and Madden's voice over is no reason to pass this game up. And for those of you who are wary about the intricate playbooks - there's a tutorial mode that explains the plays as you run them. Not only is it helpful for playing Nintendo, it teaches the game in general too.

Best of all three

I'd expect the developers of this game to know the most about it. EA Canada, the division of Electronic Arts that has developed this game for GCN, PS2, and XBox, has said themselves that the GCN version is the best of the 3. They said that the textures, the lighting, the animation, the framerate, is the best. The modes of play are the exact same, and since the GCN verison is the last to come out, it will have the most recent team changes. The only downside to the GCN version is that the franchise stats only save for one year, rather than five. Not a big deal. If you are loking for a great football game, get Madden 2002. I know I am, along with NFL 2k3 and NFL Blitz next year.

I rented this game from blockbuster one night thinking that it would be an O.K. game. Boy was I wrong! It is the coolest football I have ever played!! The graphics were great and you could really see the expressions on the players faces'. It is not one of those games where they don't make it look like the play would be immposible because he isn't lined up with the ball. It is also cool because if you or the other team make a good play, they might show the coaches mad or happy. These are just some of the great features given to you when you buy Madden 2002 for the Nintendo Game Cube.
