Great Game, but controls need work.

I really love this game, aside from a few minor flaws. First off, when playing defense, the large A button is used to change players, while the B button is used to tackle. This is very awkward. I would sometimes accidently change the player when I was trying to tackle. The other problem is that the franchise and create-a-team take up a whole memory card. That means you're practically paying extra... so you can have a franchise. The game has great graphics and gameplay, but these problems are annoying.
Great GAme

This is one of 3 Gamecube games I intially purchased, the others being Star Wars and All-Star Baseball. This game and Star Wars are amazing. Madden's graphics are almost like the real thing. The game is easy to use, there are all the teams and players, the players even look like themselves. Gameplay is fun, especially 2 player. The soundtrack is really good with great and timely commentary by Madden and Summerall (I think). You have to like Madden though since he talks a lot. The stadiums are like the real thing, cheerleaders on the side, etc.... Highly recommend.
One of Gamecube's Best

I got my Gamecube for Christmas, and I went out two days later to get Madden 2002. After I brought it home and put it in, I was pleasantly surprised. The graphics are incredibly realistic, but the sounds are awesome... You can really hit people hard in this game, and when you do, boy, do you hear it! To add to the fray, John Madden and Pat Summerall do a great commentary after each play, and they talk about individual players as well.
But after you're done hearing that "the owner of the red sports car has left your lights on," you want great gameplay, and Madden delivers. You can just play single games, or you can do an entire season. But if you want more, you can even run a franchise through 30 seasons drafting players and building superstars over the years.
Another dimension of the game is the Madden Cards. By practicing in the two-minute drills or doing things like throwing a 30-yard pass in the games, you earn tokens that can be used to buy Madden Cards. These cards boost your players' abilities during games and can be traded with other people.
I do have to give you three words of warning, however. The first is that you need to make sure you memorize all the controls so your players actually do what they're supposed to. Second, you have to save everything yourself, it doesn't do that for you... And finally, to save a season, you need an *entire* memory card....
This is a great Gamecube game, though, and a must-have for anyone who likes playing football on their TV!
Great Game, Wrong System

Gamecube is an awsome system. I love it, and wish I owned one for games like Melee, Sunshine, and Animal Crossing. But for sports titles, I'm sorry to say, it's rediculous. And for Madden, it's below rediculous.
Reasons:
1. Everyone knows the true joy of playing sports on a video game now a days is franchise mode. Signing free agents, drafting, holding a team together, or trying to repeat back to back. That's what make sports games fun! Problem with Gamecube's version of football: A FRANCHISE TAKES UP A WHOLE MEMORY CARD! Sorry Nintendo, but you need some sort of built in memory for sports titles. As franchises and dynastys get (YAY) longer and longer (already some are 25 seasons), it's gonna take more memory to support it. 1 memory card now, 2 for the 2004 edition, 3 for the 2005 version, etc... Were not made of money Nintendo! We only have enough cash for a few memory cards.
2. The controller! I love the Gamecube controller for games like Mario, Zelda, Melee, Animal Crossing, Pikmin. Unfortunantly Gamecube Contreller + Sports titles = NO NO.
Nintendo made a great controller for those types of games, but not for sports titles. Not enough buttons for 5 to 6 receivers, a boost button, and a pump fake. Not to mention the bounce back affect of the triggers. This is not a controller for sports games, and definantly not football. People always whine about how many buttons Xbox and PS2 have. In this case, the buttons were well needed. Sports titles need buttons!
Those two reasons are cridicle to buying Madden or Gamecube. It just doesn't work. Maybe if they make a special controller, but until then, I cant imagine a good game of football on a Gamecube. Sorry Nintendo, this is not your strength.
Go for Xbox if your a sports fan. I want to play NBA, Football, baseball; and all of those take memory. Xbox has it built in, not to mention a great controller for it; and slightly beter graphics. Xbox even has some decnt games coming out (Tru Fantasy Online, Blinx the Timesweeper, Halo 2, Medal of Honor: Frontline; even GTA3 is rumored to be soon on it's way to Xbox).
I hope you see my point when I talk about Madden + Gamecube = Impossible. It's great for other games, but Madden..........
This is the game you have to get!

There are some bad points in the game like you can pass through the player's bodies like they are invisible. Sometimes the refs make bad calls. But there are more good points than bad points in this game! Now for the good...Awesome graphics, many modes to choose from, accurate player stats, ability to build your own players, four player mode so all your friends can play together on it, and the crowd even waves their hands and cheers for you! This is THE game every football lover should get!
So What if it Looks Great?

I paid $6 to rent this game, and even that was a complete waste of money. John Madden annoyingly says the same things after similar plays (so by the second game, you've heard it all), but that's just commentary, that's not that big, right?
Well, when I tried to view an instant replay, none of the players showed up, just the ball.
When I made a pass, as soon as I threw it, it was called a fumble. I know the rules of football. That was a PASS.
The same lame rap song plays during the game and during all menus.
The gameplay is aggrevating and was designed poorly for the Gamecube controller.
I could go on, but I'm limited here. Its not worth it and it falls way below many of the other great football titles I've played.
Avoid this one.
The BEST football game for any game system.

Madden 2002 is the best football game on system. The gameplay is easy to pick up and the Franchise mode is really fun. The only thing that brings this game down is the commentary. I would advise any football fan to buy this game.
Awesome!
