The good news is that this game is a breakthrough; a push towards dissolving the barrier between games and movies. It is a milestone much like Dragon's Lair was 20 years ago. The screen has been wiped of all the gaming conventions such as ammo meter, map, health meter, etc. There are no med packs, but that fiction has been replaced with an equally farcical one, leaning against a wall to regain health. Overall, the game gives you the same feeling you get watching Snatch. The graphics and overall atmosphere of the game are dead on.
The bad news is, the gameplay and depth just plain [are unacceptable]. You drive (alot), you shoot, you watch a cut scene. Repeat 24 times and you're done. Driving is a real pain without a map. Note to future designers. If you want to do without an in-game map, please put a printed one in the case. Driving around this huge city with only a turn signal giving you a 120 degree idea of the right direction is maddening. Mission 12 made me want to quit just because I couldn't get all the way across town to the destination. I was literally going in circles. There is ALOT of driving. The action scenes are very repetitive, although environments change. Dispose of a few baddies, lean, heal. Kill some more; repeat. The cutscenes are well done, but very long in places.
The game price appears to be discounted. ... So, if you are a hard core gamer, it's probably worth it just to play for a while. Otherwise, just go through GTA III or Vice City again. It's much more fun.
Excellent game for mature gamers.

The Getaway is not Vice City. I own both games and I think it is unfair to compare them. They are both excellent games in their own terms. The Getaway is a game for mature gamers looking for a realistic adventure in the fabolous city of London. It has a crude story that grabs your interest from the beginning, and keeps you to playing to find out what happens next. It has exhilirating car chases, shooting and a few sneaking missions. Graphics are superb and the city of London is incredibly realistic. It has some flaws but considering everything is one of the best games for mature gamers (like me) out there. Here are the pros and cons:
PROS
- Excellent graphics
- Game and storyline in different languages (5)
- Realistics car physics and injuries
- Compelling plot
- Large number of real cars and crazy car chases
- More realistic gameplay (police are called if you hit a pedestrian)
CONS
- Weak targeting system
- Can't skip cinemas
- Lack of a map
- Can't revise the individual game objectives
- Few weapons
In conclusion, if you like a game with a compelling story and realistic gameplay don't miss this one.
an incomplete program!!!

Please don't waste your money on this game! It's a driving game, set in a large city, and you have no maps available!!! The rear blinker on the car lights to tell you when to turn!!! Yeeesh!!! You have a horrible range of vision when outside the car, (you can't see enemies approach until they've kilt ye), and your character turns and moves as if in slow motion!!! (you're shot 3 times before you can turn to return fire!!!) HORRIBLE!!! And if that's not bad enough, you cannont bypass the lengthy set-up scenes! ie. When you load a saved game, you have to sit through 6 minutes or so of video you've already seen!!! Just sit there and wait, wait, wait... I can't believe how many people liked this game! It had the potential to be a good one, if the producers/programmers had taken the time to finish their work before pushing it onto the market. They must've had financial pressures to get it out there. Many game producers seem to be rushing incomplete, incompetent games to market these days. It's all about the money? Get a decent game with your money, like "Socom Navy Seals" or Devil May Cry 2. Avoid Sony titles like 'The Getaway".
Too much of a movie and not enough of a game.

Try as I might, after the initial time I spent playing the first two levels, I can only play this game in ten minute increments before throwing down my controller due to sloppy controls, a completely horrible camera system, and unskippable, unpauseable cutscenes that last too long.
I'll start by describing the hell that is the driving section of the game. This is a real dud. You have no clue where you're going, save for the lousy "turn signal navigation system", where your turn signals turn on to indicate which direction you should be going. Never mind that this is hardly "realistic" as the game supposedly tries hard to be (How many people do YOU see driving down the road with their turn signals on, indicating a turn about a mile up the road?) Unfortunately, it does away with the map system, which I feel is integral to this type of game. This limits not only exploration, but you have no clue where you're going...you're at the mercy of your turn signals. Also, the camera is fixed behind your car, and only moves after you've been going in reverse for about 5 seconds (rendering reverse useless, as you're more likely than not to ram something before your camera switches for you.) You can never tell what's behind you or to your side. Realistic? I beg to differ. Even the ...hero needs a rearview mirror...
The on foot part is a different beast. This is why I gave the game two stars. It's not good enough to be the point that carries the game, as the controls are unresponsive, and the camera useless. However, you get an array of moves that include standing against walls, so you can pop out of a doorway and cap a few slugs into a bad guy and pop back in before they can respond. You can crouch and roll, which are alright, however, the best feature is the ability to grab people standing by, and use them as human shields. Enough of the alright, and on to where they ruined this part! In a true bit of "realism" your character has the power to heal ALL wounds by leaning up against a wall! It doesn't get any more real than that, ladies and gentlemen! What's MORE "realistic" is the way they did the stairs. You can only take stairs one at a time. You cannot drag hostages up them or roll down them. You can't aim and shoot people while walking up stairs. I wish they didn't try so hard to make it so "realistic" and actually tried to make it "FUN".
On the plus side, the graphics are pretty, but what to graphics matter when the game itself is [bad]?
Note to video game developers: No matter how much you try to make us "play a movie," know that we are, in fact, playing a game. Throw us a bone here. On-screen indicators ARE NOT EVIL. The ability to adjust your own camera IS NOT WRONG. Lastly, for the love of Pete...maps were NOT spawned by Lucifer himself. People LIKE to have information at their fingertips. Depriving them of that DOES NOT MAKE A GAME BETTER! It only suffers for your stupidity. Can the ideas of making us "play movies." Try developing a game, instead.

the game play is not all it is cracked up to be, there are many glitches in the game. Poor control of character when on foot. very little variables to control, for example weapons are very limited. WE have hade much better games in the past, programers should not take a step back in technology. RENT IT dont buy it!!! Any game where it takes like 10 times to finish different levels is extreamly frustrating and fun points go down fast... I regret buying this game.
Great game to borrow, not to buy

I bought this game and I admit I am happy with my purchase. The gameplay is similar to GTA III, but you have no choice to move about the city freely until after you've beaten the entire game. The game has its ups and downs. The downside is once you figure out how to heal (lean against a wall) the game becomes real easy, and the time you have to take out to find a safe place and sit there for a minute, waiting for your wounds to close up, is almost unbearable. This game is very realistic. I have never seen a city redone on a game so accurately and cars crash down pretty easily, unlike GTA III. This will happen ALOT because of London's one-way streets. There is no map, and the only way you can navigate in the car is by the turn-signals that blink on and off. yes, sometimes, these will lead you into a wall, but once you get to know London and the game more, you can easily avoid this. There are levels and cinemas on here thta should be going down in video game history books, because they are so original and great. When you do beat this game, Free Roaming Mode is available,b ut that's it. there's no huge replay value for this game. Once you beat it, you're done. Just one more thing, if you have a low threshold to various obscenities, do not buy this game. The F word pops out of the dialogue about every five seconds, maybe less.

Plain and simple this game is a rip off of Grand Theft Auto. It must be nice for all of the UK fans to have a game based in their country, but it would have been better had it been an original idea.

One of the most eagerly awaited games came to our screens and consoles not with bang but with a burp. It seems that 'Team Soho' have decided to take a few steps back in the modern day 3D action/shoot-em-up/driver/drama by releasing something that is more than a few notches down from what they should be capable of doing.
First of all there are NO camera angles in the car other than 3rd person driver view. No rear view or side views or interior views which is a total shame since it seems like the game engine could actually handle it. Why bother creating a realistic map of London if we can't look around a bit or even SEE the police cars that are chancing us!!!... Seriously!
So okay we will forgive it maybe if something else happens like the ultra cool combo movements we have been hearing about but alas Max Payne style character animation has been thrown out the door for something that looks like it has just popped out from 'Afraid of the Dark 1'. The character does two cool movements period. These are.... breaking necks and..... acting drunk when all shot up. Okay... very cool... but I think I paid some money for a GAME here?
The cut scenes, story and character animation are NOT BAD at all but I would rather watch 'Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels' than this. I really wanted to play 'The Getaway' and when the action starts and you begin driving you have about three minutes fun and then it all starts to get very repetitive. The car smash physics, controls and damage are great but it is still a few notches down from what you expect (don't expect any stunts or overturning in The Getaway either) because it is simply a bit boring. A few ramps here and there would have made all the difference.
Okay so we drive and then we reach the place where we are supposed to do some shooting with sort of 'around the corner' style shots and taking hostages as bullet shields before capping them because they have served their purpose. Cool!!! for awhile and then you find that the actual control of the character is like a 50/50 bet. Sometimes it works and aims and you can shoot and sometimes the enemy is running through a wall or you seem to have targeted him even though he is standing behind a wall and then someone you where aiming at vanishes into a wall and then you say to hell with this someone get The Getaway into product testing fast!!! AND THIS IS THE MORAL OF THE STORY.
Team Soho have clearly put themselves under pressure to release a game for that Christmas period. Well that is fine with me and if product stability is put second to XMAS sales figures then fine... but to be quite frank I feel that I will use caution with Team Soho releases. All it would have taken is a little more testing, a few fixes here and there and then we would have something to boast about!
Driv3r and Vice City had bugs but where playable... this one is totally not.
One of the best games ever!

This game has to be the most realistic game. The cars look real and there is real body damage not just panel damage. The game will definatly be a challenger to the Grand Theft Auto series. I am not saying GTA [...is bad] because it is probably the best game but this game is equal in gameplay.
Brilliant Game

GO OUT AND BUY THIS GAME.
This is a great game and is beyond quality that Vice City will put out. London looks great and so real. The graphics are real quality - you will be impressed by these graphics the moment you turn on the PS2 - very impressive.
