Through a Very Cool Looking Glass

The Longest Journey is more of a trip than a journey, more of a quest than an adventure. Like Alice falling down the rabbit hole into a very tripped out world of caterpillars smoking hash, and concoctions that turn a person very small or very large, The Longest Journey is a five-senses experience. And April Ryan, TLJ's central character, is the perfect hostess. If this were a movie, think natalie Portman or Wynona Ryder (pre- sticky finger days).

TLJ is a more-edgy version of the Myst series, but in a platform more similar to a DreamCatcher game (inventory items, various characters with whom you must interact, etc.)

You bounce between two parallel worlds: Stark (a mythical, futuristic west coast city) and Arcadia (Grimm's Fairy Tales meets Jules Verne), with the fate of the world in your hands (and eyes, nose, ears, etc.). TLJ is to be savored - rich graphics, excellent voice acting, compelling, not-too-difficult story line, puzzles, etc.

This is not your typical, McComputer fare. Rather than hamburger, think filet mignon. As such, it will flood your senses and fill you up right.

Caution: I wouldn't recommend this game for young ones - the language is profane at times.

I read about this game a few years back while browsing through a videogame website. It was European based, written, produced, and published. It had huge success in Europe and recieved great reviews. They also emphasized how it wasn't planned for US release for at least another year. I was eager to play it but had to wait patiently. A solid year later I purchased my own copy. There are five games that have grabbed my attention so effectively that I played them constantly, went to bed thinking about them, and dreamt about them: Half-Life, Ghost Recon, Gran Turismo 3, Starcraft, and The Longest Journey. It absorbed my life for three weeks. It cut into my sleeping time, it made me forget to eat, and my only thoughts at work were how to get to the next chapter.

It's an original story with tons of characters. Once the story gets rolling it'll suck you in. A lot of people say it's a slow start but I beg to differ. It sets up a lot of script and facts that you need. Clues pop up every once in a while that pique your interest until you can't stand it any longer and absolutely must know what's going on. It's superbly paced and the voice-acting is great. It's not Oscar winning but it's definately not like Final-Fantasy-X-unacceptable. Sometimes you do run into gobs of dialogue and you'll catch yourself daydreaming. Imagine you're reading a book and it's much easier to follow.

It really is a great story. Something that many video game companies forget to involve.

A friend told me about "The Longest Journey" telling me it was like all those dumb Sierra games(I swear by Gabriel Knight and Quest for Glory) you used to love. I told him they didnt make games like that anymore...............I was dead wrong. The Longest Journey not only boasts a top notch adventuring story line(equipped with well written dialogue and voice acting), it also comes with a classic adventure interface that could have came straight out of a Sierra series.

You really get to like the Main character April Ryan(wisecracking art student/reality shifter), which is why its kind of sad that its a pretty self contained story, so there isnt much room for a sequel featuring her. Anyway kudos to the good people at Funcom for helping ressurect the dying adventure genre.

A masterpiece

This game is simply one of the best PC games, and the best PC adventure game, ever made.

I first heard about this game after playing and enjoying Syberia I and II. They are similar point-and-click adventure puzzle-solving games, with a strong central character and intriguing storyline. However, I quickly discovered that, if the Syberia titles are thought of as appetizing hors d'oeuvres, then The Longest Journey is a full five-course meal with all the trimmings!

The main reason this game stands out compared with other adventure games is the extremely deep storyline and characters. There is lots of dialogue, so it is not for people with short attention spans. The voice-acting is absolutely superb. The actress who plays April Ryan, the central character, deserved an Oscar (if such things exist for PC game acting).

April is the lynchpin of the whole game, and if you are like me you will quickly fall in love with her. What makes her so appealing is her whacky sense of humour. April is always wise-cracking, and is guaranteed to make you crack up even when all she is doing is routine game-mechanic stuff like: you can't go through that door, you can't combine those objects, etc. The many other characters she meets in the course of her adventures are also well-acted and often extremely comical.

The fact that the game doesn't take itself too seriously helps the player come to terms with the hocus-pocus storyline and often highly improbable situations and puzzles. That said, the story, which takes many hours to complete, is also extremely deep, absorbing and often moving. April proves herself to be a genuine heroine, who triumphs against her own insecurity as well as the many bizarre challenges she faces in the course of her travels.

Without wanting to give too much away, it's an epic Wizard-of-Oz, Alice-in-Wonderland style fantasy adventure, where April goes to all sorts of weird and wonderful places and meets all sorts of weird and wonderful characters and creatures. Along the way she has to save the world, which involves getting out of one sticky situation after another.

You'll notice that so far I have heaped all this praise on the game without even touching on the actual gameplay! If you've played inventory-based, point-and-click adventures, then The Longest Journey's game mechanics are a pretty standard affair, but great fun for all that. In general I found that the puzzles were not-too-easy and not-too-difficult. They were nicely-challenging without becoming frustrating. True, there is one particularly notorious puzzle near the start, but you'll crack it with patience.

If you enjoy this game as much as I did you will feel emotionally drained at the end of it. I was sad when it was all over, and missed April and her friends. I hope that the recently released sequel, Dreamfall, will capture at least some of the magic of this wonderful game.

This game takes patience, because it has a lot of dialogue (read: STORY). Not only does it have a long well-thought out story complete with various puzzles and lush, painstakingly detailed backgrounds, but all the voice acting is incredibly good. It's funny, it's dramatic, it's sci-fi and it's fantasy. Pick up a copy, it's cheap, and it's worth 3 times the price.

I ordered The Longest Journey and when it came I couldn't wait to play it. Simply fantastic game and great puzzles! Unfortunately, my game crashed after just 3 weeks of play so I can no longer play this really fun game. I don't really know why it crashed - I got a type of error message saying that my there was a problem with the DirectDrawSurface object and that the "surface graphics" had been eliminated somehow. I went to FunCom's website and several times e-mailed them about this and also read all the contents of the website. So far, FunCom hasn't contacted me. The only thing I can think of that could be the problem is that my laptop runs on Windows XP. For those of you running Windows 95 and 98, though, it's really a terrific game.

LOVED IT!

Of all the graphic adventure games i've played, (and i've been playing since king's quest 1) this is by far the best. My favorite one! Graphics wonderful! Plot fantastic! Wonderful humor! I never wanted it to end. And it didn't! For the longest time--it kept going and going. Well worth it, this game. :)

Guaranteed to keep you happy for the longest time!

I bought this game recently and can't say enough good things about it. While it came out some time ago, there is nothing dated about it. It runs on old systems, and is a blast to play.

The 3D graphics aren't the latest, but the 2D art is beautiful. Also, the cutscenes are very well done. The story is magnificent (the strongest part of the game), and though the game gets slow sometimes, there were no puzzles that I couldn't understand (unlike some other adventure games). The humor is not used as much as in some Lucasarts games, for example Grim Fandango, but it is there (however, much of it is adult humor)

Thus, my first warning would be that a person needs to be mature when playing this game (I was 14, and I didn't have a problem, some people might not be as mature at my age). There are sexual themes (including homosexuality), a great deal of bad language, and a little violence. My only other warning is to not forget to eat, sleep, and talk to family while this game is on your hard drive.

While I recomend this game to anyone, I especially recomend this game to anyone who is not a big gamer. This game is a great introduction to gaming.

Wish It Would've Been Even Longer!

I truly have never played a more enjoyable and interesting adventure game than "The Longest Journey". Right from the start, I was totally entranced by the graphics, sound, and story, which continued to improve as the game progressed. The character of April Ryan is very likeable, and her dialogue is very real and appropriate for every interaction. I went through a variety of emotions while playing this game, and found myself staring at the screen endlessly into the night. About five hours later, I realized I'd only left my desk once, and it was about time to get some sleep!
This game allows the user to pick and choose questions and answers, which I liked very much, because this means I can play the game more than once to see the other reactions and answers that characters might offer.
The only difficulty I had when trying to play this excellent adventure game was in the beginning movie. I had help from the troubleshooting guide in the "read me" text though, and my problem (thankfully) was fixed very easily. If you have a slow computer it's a good idea to disable 3D acceleration and high quality video.
I am so glad that this outstanding game won the title of adventure game of the year. It truly deserves it. I hope every person who plays this game is filled with amazement during this journey of discovery, and recognizes it for what a well-written and thoughtful PC game it is.

Absolutely Loved It!

I love adventure games like Myst, Riven, Journeyman, and others. When I read the reviews of The Longest Journey, I knew I would enjoy it. What I found was a game that kept me in the seat for hours. I couldn't stop playing. I would recommend this game to anyone who enjoys 3rd person adventure games and who loves the above titles!
