Not wholesome? Chill

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 7 / 9

The individual from Provo gives TLJ just one star, claiming it "isn't wholesome." Leaving aside the fact that this is the best adventure game I've played in years, with great characters and a story worthy of the fantasy/sci-fi masters, I want to address this charge. I will certainly grant that there is profanity in the game, though not really all that much; more importantly, to say it isn't "wholesome" isn't to say it's immoral. After all, J. R. R. Tolkien was a devout Catholic, but LOTR is far from "wholesome." I wouldn't put TLJ on a par with Tolkien's masterwork, but like LOTR, it offers a compelling portrait of both good and evil, and along the way it makes a strong case that the purpose of art is to communicate truth. This is a far higher and greater thing than the tame white-bread ambition to be "wholesome." As a gamer, I recommend this game without question or reservation, because it's fantastic; as a pastor, I also recommend it, because it will make you think.

One of the best yet

There just simply aren't enough good things I can say about this game. The graphics are excellent, the characters intriguing and the story line, intense.I recently purchased this again, just to play it all over again. There is only one other game of this quality, and that is "Syberia".April Ryan, our heroine, begins her journey in a dream. She bounces between Stark & Arcadia throughout the game, her reality and the dream world. After some time, she can't quite distinguish between dreams and reality, and eventually is thrust into her dreams...which soon become reality.
There are many fascinating characters she meets on her way to save the world, and she keeps a handy diary, where her thoughts and important game information and subtle hints are stored.
The journey is long and time is running out...shapeshifting and jumping through portals into another demension become an everyday occurence for the hip, young art student. This game is without a doubt, one of the best I've ever played. An exciting thrill-ride for the mind that doesn't stop until the credits roll.A MUST have all time classic.5 stars.

Why did it have to end?

I swear, even though it was a pretty long game, I seriously wanted to keep going. The ending was heartfelt - but too short - so I am hoping that they are planning to make some sort of sequel. This is the kind of game that will keep you up until 3 am and you don't even know it. And then when you realize that you "have a life" and you can't call in sick, you sit there all day at work thinking about what you have to do in the game when you get home that night and start playing it again. Sick. The graphics are ok, the plot and the characters compensate for that. I'm a adventure game junkie so you can believe me when I say that this is a good game for your collection, something that you'll enjoy playing again in 6 months.

Too Much Dialogue

Too be fair, I have to admit, I haven't finished this game. I figure I completed about 30% of the game. The reason I haven't finished it is because I bought a new PC and haven't had the time to reinstall the game and catch up to where I left off before. That being said...

Like some of the other reviewers, the one reason that this game felt just mediocre was because of the extraneous dialogue you must sit through. I agree that the voice-acting is terrifc andthe game has beautiful visuals and is captivating in the manner in which everything is presented, but at least 50% of the game is spent listening to characters talking.

Don't get me wrong, I do have the patience to listen to dialogue in a PC game, but there was just so much that I found myself longing for the moment when it became clear that I didn't have to talk to that character anymore.

The best way I can put it is to think of the Star Wars movies. If you had to stop every 5 minutes and listen to Yoda chat for 10 minutes, you'd probably grow tired of it after 3 or 4 times. The first couple of times you'd probably think it was pretty cool, but soon you'd start thinking, "Ok, when do I get to use my light saber?" Get the point?

True enough, I could totally change my thoughts about the game when I complete it, but at the moment, it's a little hard to find motivation to restart the game since I'd have to sit through most of the dialogue yet again. Otherwise, this is a great example of how to present an adventure game in the PC format.

Longest Journey I've ever taken...

This game sure is LONG. That's not a bad thing though, it makes it seem worth the money. If it was shorter you might feel ripped off.

Some of the puzzles are really easy and others are simply ridiculous. The background story is really hard to follow and doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

The worst thing about this game though is all the talking and reading that is required. A simpler storyline would have been better. All the mumbo jumbo that goes along with the story is not necessary to play the game. It also takes forever to get anywhere, the character walk/runs so slow. You can speed some things up with the ESC key but that is a pain to do all the time.

Overall the game was not all that bad and I'm glad I played. It was only $10 anyway so it was worth the money.

The best game of the year

The longest journey is one of the best game of the year. It starts introducing the plot in a subtle pace to make the player comfortable with April Ryan, the main character of the game. The game itself unravels as a story in a book with extensive dialogues that stir a sense of caring and compassion toward all the characters that April encounters on her journey. The voice acting of Sarah Hamilton is credible and almost fascinating as well as the other voice acting acters involved in this game. With a small budget, the Longest Journey have accomplished what other adventure games have not accomplished since these last years which is the responsibility that the player takes in order to save the world. Even though it sounds kind of a cliche, the player falls seduced with April and all of the stream of consciousness that April writes on her diary. This game not only gives a sense of comfort and relaxation, but it has different types of styles that are similar with other adventure games such as Myst, Escape from Monkey Island, and Grim Fandago. Although the puzzles are much more easier than the Myst Saga, it posses the mystery and the enchantment of the game. This game is a jewel and there is no doubt that April Ryan leaves Lara Croft in the dust.

Teddy.

Engaging, indepth, and lovely all around!

First off, the storytelling in this game will blow you away. You can get as indepth as you want, learning all about all the characters, or you can scratch the surface, playing just what you need to get through the story. (Personally, I recommend going indepth.) The voice-acting is beyond wonderful; you'll rarely find voice-acting this good outside high budget animated movies. The story itself is original in some aspects and yet comfortably familiar in others.

The characters themselves are the one of the real prizes of the game. April, the main character, is someone you can identify with and whom you eventually come to care for. All of the characters have a healthy dose of sarcasm to liven up the dull moments and Crow has remained of my favorite characters of all time.

I ran into no problems bug-wise and only had problems with two puzzles. The interface isn't really anything that new, it's a point-and-click adventure; if you don't like that kind you shouldn't buy this game. However, even today, the backgrounds have held up as some of the most beautiful art inside a game that I have ever seen and, even now, when I play it, it still impresses me.

The only real problem I had is that I've always felt frustrated with the lack of resolve at the end of the story. It felt to me as though they told half of it and then didn't finish it. However, a sequel, Dreamfall, is currently in the works so that makes me less frustrated.

Overall I think is one of the best games I have ever played, period. The minute I finished the first time, I went and played it again, that's how good it is. Still engaging no matter how many times I play it, I still find something new in it. I would definately recommend it.

I'd Give It Ten Stars If I Could

Blown Away! I was so immersed in this game, the storyline, the characters, the never ending quest to solve the mystery of April's identity. The writers did an excellent job with the plot and subplots in the story, paying close attention to detail. It was a beautiful story, intriquing, with twists and turns and the game went on and on, I never wanted it to end. I had no problems with it on my new computer with XP. The game play was easy to moderate, mostly, with some bizzare puzzle combinations I would have never figured out without a hint, like when April had to get into the back door of the movie theater and she had to put a hat on some garbage and use the shadow it made along with the voice of a monkey toy to make the attendant think it was a police officer, so he'd leave and she could get inside. But what would an adventure game be without some difficult parts? I was truly amazed at how well this game was done and I'm hoping I can find some other adventure games that join this level of quality.

this game is so incredibly overrated

It is incredible how I was suckered into buying this game from all the hype. Hell, it even comes as the "Game of the Year Edition"! What a joke.

Problem 1: Why is it that adventure games always seem to overlook the whole puzzle aspect and just make it a redundant 7 hour movie? The VERY few puzzles that are actually in the game, save one in the sea, are laughable.

Problem 2: I'm always up for a good story in a game to keep me captivated, but this is just rediculous. There was so much dialogue it was torture. Not only that, but there are very little twists or changes in the story that would keep you even remotely captivated. At one point I actually started skipping all of the dialogue all together and then reading the log book so it would go faster.

Problem 3: THE STORY SUCKS. Am I the only one who found the story to be pretty lame? It seemed kind of cool with the whole dark technological setting at first, but it was made really cheesy with the whole fantasy aspect. People think that just because it has swear words in it, it's a good story. The only interesting character was the dude in the floating wheelchair, and even he cops out and gets some cheesy lines when he meets his fate.

The only good point? The graphics of course, which are quite good and allow this review 2 stars.

Replay value? Fat chance. After watching the disappointing ending you will likely throw this game in the trash so you never have to hear any of the annoying characters yap their heads off for minutes at a time.

Well worth it

I purchased this game as an impulse buy - I came to buy a different game and happened to click on this one out of curiosity. I'm glad I did; this is one of the best adventure games I have played in a long time.

The storyline is epic, the execution grand; the graphics are beautiful, the voices well done, the script is excellent. The characters respond quite realistically, given their circumstances. The puzzles are good, almost all of which you can work out given sufficient thought (and remembering the credo: try to pick up everything!). There are enough plot twists to keep you guessing and keep you interested. This is one of those games which I almost couldn't stop playing long enough to go to work or to sleep, I was that much into it.

My only complaint is that the ending seems a little too abrupt, leaving too many things dangling -- but then I guess that's also why I'm waiting so eagerly for TLJ2 to be released :-)
