Oh how I wish for a sequel to this awesome game!

This was the second game I ever got for PS2 and I just love it. I still go back to it after several years for nothing more than the thrills and good times it has to offer. Bounty Hunter isn't perfect but it is one of the better Star Wars games I've played and its a great third person shooter. I remember how much the graphics, cutscenes, effects, sound, and dialog blew me away a couple years ago and all I can do today is appreciate all these things more. Every time I play the game (I've played it a lot) I find new things to mess around with, whether it be small rodent creatures to blast or secret areas containing heavy weapons. The worlds are immerse with detail and most are actually almost beautiful. The explosions and laser blasts that fill the levels all look great, as do the characters, who's lypsyncing and motions are excellently executed. The action gameplay is fast paced with a very high frame rate. The sound design sounds as though it was taken directly from a Star Wars film. And most of all, the story is very entertaining, from your first encounter with the villanous scum Meeko, to your stealing of Slave 1 from an astroid prision, to meeting Tyranus. The story takes you all around the galaxy and be prepared to meet up with some familiar characters such as Zam Weesel. Many have complained about the game's repetetivness and lousy camera and I will admit that the camera tends to work a little strangly at times, but it certainly can be controled and is not something to get all worked up over. Bounty Hunter's action has never boared me and I find it's controls to be intruative and easy to use. Star Wars Bounty Huter is an excellent game with high production values and many good things going for it, I truely hope Lucas Arts releases a sequel for it because it is one of the best games I have ever played. Thanks for reading.

Good production quality- but it's just not really fun

I really thought this game was going to be fun. It does almost everything right technically, but for some reason it just isn't fun. Perhaps it's because I've played far too many games of this sort. Whereas Jedi Knight and Jedi Outcast made you feel like a Jedi Knight- this game just doesn't make you feel like a Bounty Hunter. The only part of the game I felt like I was a bounty hunter was when I was chasing my bounty through the streets of Coruscant. But that was far too brief and once you've caught your bounty (ie tagged it) it just disappears and you are credited for the catch. This is the only time I have seen bounty actually try and flee. For most of the game, your bounty just stands there. The credits that you are awarded for catching your bounty are used to unlock different extras in the game (like an online comic book). I had hoped that the credits could be used to buy new weapons- but nope.

This game would have been much better if it were designed more like Tenchu. Instead this game feels like Obiwan for the XBOX.

Pros:
- decent back story- explains how Jango got his ship and his involvement with Tyranus.
- good graphics quality
- good cutscenes - by ILM
- good sound design - by Skywalker sound
- good user interface except for the camera. Other reviewers complain about the difficulty in switching between scanner and weapon. It's actually very simple- click UP ARROW to activate scanner; RIGHT ARROW twice to go to pistols from scanner. You'll be doing this a lot.
- Jango gets all the gadgets you'd expect for Jango
- Jet pack is his best feature- you will depend on it like Force Jump in Jedi Outcast.
- Frame rate is very high
- AI seems to be better than Jedi Outcast.

Cons:
- Very very repetitive
- Camera has a mind of its own at times and is difficult to override to see crucial elements of the game- like your character when it is trying hard not to step off a ledge.
- Camera tends to swing by itself to create a "good" view. This makes you very motion-sick very quickly. This is the first PS2 game that has made me motion sick with the wild camera swings.
- The only stealth component is that you can use your scanner to telescope out to find your victims, then shoot him/her from a long ways off. The stealth aspect doesn't really make the game more fun- like it does in Tenchu.

Better than expected

I'll admit I was a bit skeptical before I played Star Wars Bounty Hunter. I wasn't sure what to think of the pics and previews. Thankfully, it turned out to be a great game!

The graphics are much better than I was expecting (the lighting is superb). And the action can get pretty intense. When Jango uses his two blaster pistols, he can shoot at seperate enemies in different directions at once. And he can fire them pretty fast (as rapidly as you can hit the fire button). When coupled with ducking, rolling, and use of the jetpack, this can lead to some awesome gun fights. The flamethrower is pretty cool too.

The story's pretty good for an action title and there are some quality cut scenes with quality voice acting. Morrison is the best of the bunch in this title. He plays a great Jango and he gets to show more personality than he was able to in the movie (but not too much personality - they still keep him kinda shady which is good). I like how he handles some of the situations in the game - he's very aggressive and forceful.

There's just one thing I really wish they would have added - a little more animation for Jango. Don't get me wrong though. Jango stills has a decent amount of it, but when you switch weapons - ala switching to blaster pistols - it would have been cool if Jango would actually draw them out/put them away instead of them just appearing. But I guess that's just a little thing they could have added to make the game a bit more polished. It's still a great action game anyway.

Why is anyone reviewing this game if they haven't played it? Are you guys idiots? You sit there and say this game will be great, but the only reference you have is what the company putting out the game has said and what screen shots you've seen. Do us all a favor and SHUT UP! until you have played the game.

This game Rocks!!!!

We thought this game was awesome! Starwars fan or not this is the game for you! It is exciting and the levels are in a variety of exotic locations. The levels are long and loading is speedy. The only problem is sometimes you reach a level that is hard and takes a while to get past. The pattern is about 3 or so easier levels and then a more chalenging one. You get a variety of weopons including your pistols, whipcord, jetpack mounted mistles and other fun toys. You see a variety of cool aliens and can get secondary bounties on all the levels. Also the graphics are cool but not too disgusting so it isn't like a mature game. One of my favorite parts is the very cool wildlife (also dangerous). Get this game! Hey even my older sister loves it!

I've never really cared for the games in the Star Wars lineup (I mean, how many variations on X-Wing, Tie Fighter, STARfighter, JEDI Starfighter, Racer, Racer REVENGE on and on and on can you have?). So, I wasn't expecting to like this. Thing is, I loved it.

I'll agree that you spend a lot of time running around in circles wondering exactly where to go (hel-LO, Lucasarts, a MAP would be NICE), but that's actually why I liked it. You have to be able to think creatively sometimes in order to figure out your next move, and that's what turns this game into more than just a thumb exercise. And the views are so good, I don't mind a little extra walking around. Camera view is a little tough to control sometimes, though.

The bad guys are ridiculously easy to kill, but the addition of the "Secondary Bounties" goal gives you a reason to not just go around blasting everything in sight (sure you could just kill everybody, but you could also use some strategy, kill a lot of baddies, AND get rich).

All in all, it's a fairly intense game that makes you think AND gives good action and GREAT scenery.

Only big down side I really saw was that the voices of passersby got REALLY old REALLY quick. THere's only so many times you can hear "Hey," "Get him" and "Look a bounty hunter" before you just want to turn the sound off. I never checked to see if you can just turn the voices off (I just rented it), so maybe it's not even really a problem.

A Star Wars Game at Heart

Star Wars: Bounty Hunter is a game that could have been much better, although it still provided it's entertainment. You play as the mercenary Jango Fett and put to use his many weapons including: Dual Blater pistols, flamethrower, poison darts, sniper rifle, whipcord, and his jetpack rocket. Jango can also zip around using his jetpack. Although, it doesn't last forever, so when you run out of juice you come back down to the ground and then it recharges itself rather quickly. The game takes around 12 hours to beat, with about 18 levels in 6 different worlds. The game follows a great story line based on Jango and highlights of his career. Like how he got the Slave I and how he became the model for the clone army. The plot has you collecting bounties for certain people, but in the missions themselves you can collect seconary bounties. Now this isn't always an easy task. You first have to scan them to see if there is a price on there head. Next you have to mark them, then (whether they are wanted dead or alive, or either one)you either kill them or wrap them up with the whipcord. THEN you have to collect it and normally you do all this under fire from other aliens. I found myself getting killed quite often while I went through the process of capturing a bounty. The gameplay also features a new targeting system where you can lock on to two people at once (you can only do this with the dual blaster pistols). Flying around and shooting things can be really fun at first but eventually it gets a little repetitive. When there is a lot of action around, the game does not slow up at all. It pretty much keeps a constant framerate, much to my relief. The graphics are fairly good, from the speedy laser to Jango's helment. Some of the enviroments could use some work, especially indoors and in the jungle levels. This time around Lucasarts has Industrial Light and Magic doing their CGI cutscenes (which look amazing) for them and Skywalker Sound taking care of the audio. The sound (like most Star Wars games) is excellent. The laser blasts and music all sounds like Star Wars. This game could have been better in several different aspects. The gameplay needs to be improved, but I don't know what...You can't quite put your finger on it but there's something missing. I also believe that the level design could have been spruced up some more. All in all I enjoyed Star Wars: Bounty Hunter and its flaws kept me from really loving it. I really wanted to, but I just can't. Bounty Hunter would make a great rental for the normal Star Wars fan, but if you're a harcore one, then you might want to hang on to this.

First off, I KNOW that the title for my review was spoken by Boba Fett (Jango's son) in Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, but I thought that it was a great line, and very applicable to my review, as well as being an integral part of game play.
Back in 1980 (I was four), TESB was released, and my friend and I instantly were awe-struck by the mysterious helmeted bounty hunter with the nasty weapons and really cool rocket pack. Needless to say, when we played with our Star Wars figures arguments generally ensued over who got to play with Boba Fett. Now, 22 years later, with the release of Episode II: Attack of the Clones, new information about Boba's past, as well as his father, Jango Fett, has been shed...
This brings me to the actual review of the game (finally!). Star Wars: Bounty Hunter gives you the opportunity to BE Jango Fett on a variety of bounty missions where you are paid to bring 'em in, dead OR alive. At your disposal are twin blaster pistols, a helmet-mounted image magnifier/bounty tracking unit, wrist-mounted cutting torch, sniper rifles, thermal detonators (grenades), flamethrowers, whipcord (for subduing bounties without killing them), and of course, your trusty missile-firing rocket pack. In addition, Jango can hang from ledges, climb ladders, crouch-walk through air ducts, and duck and roll to avoid enemy fire. In short, no place is safe if you are the hunted!
Graphics are superb, and the camera angle may be customized to create some really COOL screen shots to show your girlfriend (as if she were REALLY interested). Sound is also amazing, especially when playing with a surround-sound system. Laser bolts sizzle overhead, detonating around you, while the sounds of the environment (both familiar and alien) add to the ambience.
Some levels are quite difficult, especially when dealing with wild animals and Tusken Raiders. Stealth and discretion is often a factor in a successful hunt, but this game also has it's fair share of large-scale Star Wars-style shootouts mixing multiple enemies and heavy doses of firepower (both from you, and AT you) But be brave, watch your back, and bring your bounty in! After all, YOU are Jango Fett, the most ruthless hunter in the galaxy (as your son will be...)!
Overall, the combination of sights, sounds and the excellent control layout makes for an awesome and thrilling experience. Especially for all us geeks who have wanted to BE a Mandalorian bounty hunter for more than two decades. This game is easily one of the top five best games (on any platform) based on the Star Wars franchise. If you consider yourself even the slightest Star Wars fan, or have had a long-time fascination with all things Fett, grab this one, and prepare to make the galaxy a more dangerous place with no where to hide.

Let's see what she can do...

... my first title I grabbed Bounty Hunter by Lucas Arts and because I didn't see Grand Tourismo 3 on another rack. As a dedicated PC Gamer, I got a PS2 largely because there are games I want, but just aren't available for the PC. I'm pretty happy with Bounty Hunter, which seems to be a cross between Tomb Raider and Jedi Knight. First and foremost, it is a well put together game with very high production values that we have come to expect for Lucas Arts. CGI cut scenes were made by Industrial Light and Magic and it stars Temuera Morrison, who played Jango Fett in Attack of the Clones and Clancy Brown, (the Kurgan in Highlander), as the evil Montross.

Bounty Hunter also ties beautifully into the pre-history of Attack of the Clones, taking place ten years before the film and lends itself splendidly to filling in not only Fett's back story, but also that of Count Dooku. Basically Fett is working to crack a ring of smugglers and drug runners who are producing a highly addictive form of the death stick drug produced by a cult known as the Bando Gora, led by a former Jedi, Komari Vosa, who seems to have been at one point a pupil of Dooku. The wily count then hires both Jango and his rival, Montross, pitting them against one and other to see who can be the first to kill her. The winner will receive five-million Republic credits and a chance at immortality. Dooku, aka Tyranus, also plans to offer the winner a sizable sum if they will be cloned to create an army for the Republic.

Unlike Boba Fett, who if you follow only the films, appeared to be nothing by a 2nd rate loser who was killed by a blind Han Solo, the Bounty Hunter game gives us tremendous insight into Jango, his history and his motivations. It takes the nutty Toydarian Rozatta to crack Jango's tougher than nails exterior and convinces him to live for something more than just hunting down people and the huge sums of money he earns from it. It is this that causes Jango to ask Tyranus for an unaltered clone- Boba Fett. Jango is a badass- he's a killer and very dangerous, but there is more to him than a simple cardboard cut out his son (if you ignore the EU) would become.

Game play is pretty basic, lots of running around, jumping and shooting as Jango goes after his marks. I still haven't gotten the hang of the PS2 controls and guiding the characters as I'm more used to keyboards and mice, something I have a feeling many of the PS2 games like Bounty Hunter scream for. Jango can cling to ledges, punch and kick quite effectively, and collects a wonderful array of weapons and gear besides his standard Westar-34 blaster pistols. I suggest that once you get the back pack missiles you practice with them as much as you can, because they're hard to direct without, say, killing yourself. Collecting bounties is kinda cute- simply target people, see if they show up as having a price on their heads, zap them with your whip cord tangler then simply press the triangle button and you're done! Money is added to your running score and the more you collect the more pages of concept art you get access to. Using the flame thrower on people is quite funny as at first they run around waving their arms in the air while on fire, then they stop, drop and roll.

Graphics are a mixed bag of low to medium resolution textures, but it's all very colorful, especially on Coruscant. Some of the in-game constructs, especially space craft, take a hit in the detail as the artists drop polys and more elaborate textures. However, they're still good enough to get the point across. I would have preferred this game to be on the PC in order to have better graphics and control, as well as in the first person rather than third, (I have played so many of these types of games that I get tired of looking at the backs of characters). What carries this game is its excellent story, occasional bouts of humor and thumb wrenching game play, that while frustrating at times, never stops being fun. As my first PS2 game, I'm pretty happy with it and I think you will be, too.

Star Wars: Bounty Hunter.

INTRODUCTION:
Everyone knows that the Star Wars name is the ultimate in science fiction. Unfortunately, as far as video games go set in everyone's favorite galaxy far, far away, they have been hit and miss. For every excellent game like Rogue Leader, there's a crappy one like Masters Of Teras Kasi to bring the genre's name down in the dirt in the video gaming universe. The Episode II: Attack Of The Clones motion picture introduced us to an awesome character - Jango Fett, father of the classic Boba Fett. And in 2002, to accompany the film's release, a game was released in which the gamer could become Jango! Read on for my review of Star Wars: Bounty Hunter.

OVERVIEW:
Star Wars: Bounty Hunter was released in 2002. The game is one player, and features three-dimensional platformer-styled action. It is available for the Playstation Two and Nintendo Gamecube consoles.

REVIEW:
I have to say, I had pretty high hopes for this game, but was pretty disappointed. I was as happy as any other Star Wars fanboy, finally getting to play the role of Jango before his unfortunate decaptiation on the wrong end of Mace Windu's lightsaber. Essentially, this game is straightforward platform action. Jango travels through various scenarios on his bounty hunts, tracking various means of making a living in the galaxy. While the premise sounds cool, the whole idea kind of falls flat. It's much too straightforward and VERY repetitive. Horrible level design and the fact that you can't save whenever you want don't help things either. And did I mention the painfully-long distance between save points? And that the camera sucks, and you have no control over it? Even hunting down the extra bounties and secrets don't add a whole lot of appeal to the game. Jango's got plenty of cool gadgets and moves, which add to the game's appeal somewhat, but the fact of the matter is that the whole package just seems a bit on the generic side. The production, with great graphics and sound, can't mask the fact that this is a generic three-dimensional platformer. And besides that, there are much better Star Wars games out there. This one's only for Star Wars fanboys like myself who want every game, or for those folks who just can't get enough of platformer action.

EDITION NOTES:
This game seems to be out of print now, but fortunately, used video game stores seem to get copies in on a regular basis. In other words, you shouldn't have a whole lot of trouble hunting this game down, if you really want to get it.

OVERALL:
What needs to be said has been said. Excellent production can't mask an otherwise generic game over which the Star Wars name has been thrown. While this game isn't terrible by any means (it puts garbage like Teras Kasi to shame), there are Star Wars games out there that are considerably better than this one. Stick with those. This one's for Star Wars and platformer die-hards only.
