I Personally love Star Ocean, esp Star Ocean the second story, previous game if you dont know. but to under rate this because of no true two player action? its an RPG these games never have multiplayer, you should know that and its a bad excuse for a attack on the game
a little correction

a reviewer stated that "The original Star Ocean was a sequel to Tales of Phantasia", and this is not accurate. the two are only related in the development area; as some of the developers from Namco who made ToP split and formed a company called Tri-Ace, who develops (and quite well, i should add) the Star Ocean series.
they are not related in any way other than who's behind the scenes.

The title of my review is a direct quote from our hero, Fayt Leingod, having one of many Star Trek moments. It's also what you should shout at anyone who suggests that you play this game.
For starters, the plot is a mishmash of video game and movie cliches (there is liberal borrowing from Star Trek and Final Fantasy), strung together without regard for rhythm or structure. There was one twist I didn't see coming, but it was ripped off from a major Hollywood blockbuster so it wasn't a huge surprise. Plus, this twist actually undercut the drama to the point where I could not care about anything that had happened or was going to happen anymore. That's when the plot stopped being vanilla and started being offensively bad.
However, a poor plot to me is annoying, but not a dealbreaker. Too bad the characters are also dull (when they aren't idiots) and the dialogue is positively maddening. It's like the writers were trying to see how many words they could use without advancing the plot, characterizing a character, or being entertaining in any way. I stopped listening to the voice acting a couple hours in, because although it is quite good for a video game, nobody had anything interesting to say.
So it's unforgiveable that the dialogue also leaves out important information. For example, at the end of disc 1, you are set loose in a city and told to go to a particular spot when you want to advance the plot. No problem. But if you just go, nothing happens. You don't even get a hint as to what you need to do to proceed. Here's a hint from me: it's totally inane.
I also disliked the battle system, although I acknowledge that some people might enjoy it. I found combat to be unresponsive and frustrating until I switched over to a strategy that was merely boring (playing as the party healer). Also, the difficulty ramps way up with every dungeon, so you'll have to spend hours leveling. This is 2004, Tri-Ace. Leveling is not challenge. It's just tedious.
There was one thing I really liked, and that was the aesthetics. The graphics are spectacular (and no slowdown or excessive load times!) and the music is very good, especially the final boss theme. It's just not enough to save the game, though.
My final verdict is that this game isn't unplayable, it just isn't fun. It's a grind. Why spend 50 bucks when you could be bored and frustrated for free?

yup, you all know it
Anyway, graphics were ok, not that great. I was sort of worried about the characters health, because they're all uber-anorexic. The story was pretty good, until you get to the BIG plot twist which is really really retarted.
Gameplay: I liked the battle mode a lot, although the HP costs were a little excessive when you used a special move.
A big problem was the game went from moderately easy, up until moonbase and then the difficulty level jumps a billion levels. Damn those Angel fairy things and their spinny green move of doom.
The invent item thing is a little stupid. I mean, you dont do anything, and you can't tell what your inventing, or what you've already invented.
Best Game in the UNIVERSE(s)!!!!!! [not just ours :) ]

i love it! i just love the characters, the graphics, the story, everything! it is the best rpg ever. what am i saying, it is the best GAME ever! Fayt is awesome! i don't know y, i just really like him. maybe it's the blue hair. :)
anyways, you play as this guy named Fayt. he is 19 years old w/, as i said blue hair, and he has green eyes. he is from Earth. you are on a vacation, and then the resort (whatever you want to call it) is attacked by these Vendeeni people. you end up getting split up from your parents and the childhood friend you were w/. then you have to find your way back home, and you have to save your dad and this childhood friend. you land on some underdeveloped planets on your journey. you meet many new people and become friends w/ many of them.
you end up finding out many things you never knew about yourself. like these special powers you have. along w/ just wanting to save your dad cause he is your dad, you have to save him to ask about these powers and those of another person you meet along the way.
as i said the graphics are beautiful, and the characters are awesome! buy it! STAR OCEAN: Till the End of Time is the best game to ever be ever! LOL!
ROCK ON! :)

This game keeps it real to the previous star oceans. The good .... and the not so good. The story was simple, then they flip it, but after a little while you'll see that its still simple. The battle system saves the game. Leveling up ..... it kept me playing. There was only one flaw I think this game has. Its a BIG one. Once you get to a certain point in the game. ALL enemies will have at least one instant kill move. Doesn't sound so bad does it ? But even with an item with 100% prevention rate, they can still instantly kill you. As in .... your HP will still be full, but the character is dead none-the-less. Well, so much for all that leveling up you did. HP and Defense become completly useless. Thus leveling up. That was the end of the game for me.

This is a sequeal from the star ocean saga. The first version released in Japan had a several bug problem. Thus most of them were pull back, now the newly released version suppose to be better and even have different costumes for the character. There are up to 6 playable character, and Fate is the one you start with. It also has mutiple ending, especially depend on which character you choose to battle in the final chapter.
UGH NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I agree with drqshadow(see his review) and more. Battle system is unproportinal. Monster difficulty fluctuate dramatically. One minute you are fighting an easy monster that gives tons of exp and the next, you are fight a tough monster that gives you no exp. Item creation is long and tedios. Dungeons could be a little bit simpler to navigate through. I cant even describe how boring the story is. Battle system is horrible. Never once did i use fury to my advantage. This game was horrible compared to its sequel SO2. I discourage you from buying this game but encourage you to buy number 2
If you beleive those one star reviewers, you suck.

THIS GAME IS SO AWESOME I WISH I HAD A CAMERA. I don't know why I just wrote that down, anyway. This game is truly NOT a Final Fantasy killer, but it's worth playing this game, for beyond the surface of the tutorial level, you unleash a game so powerful, so devastatingly good, it's hard to stop playing. I call it Star Ocean: 'Till the End of Time, you can call it another great Square Enix game, I call it Star Ocean: 'Till the End of Time Director's Cut. That's its real name, you dig? Two disks, this game is awesome. A friend of mine bought this game, and he loved it. It only has 4 chapter, even though is has only 24 hours of gameplay (True RPG players don't think that's much.) I personally beleive this is an instant classic. Dig?
fun game
