Pretty good if you're a patient person...

Since about everyone else explained the story, I'll skip that.

Star Ocean: Till the End of Time is a really good game for people who like RPGs, and can withstand long cutscenes.
The REAL clencher is whether you have enough patience to spend hours leveling up to beat the area boss.

CHARACTERS: You'll find yourself caring about them, and sometimes... not. My personal favorite is either Albel Nox or Fayt Leingod. I know, all you who've already played the game are laughing at me for liking Albel, haha, very funny everyone. Albel's character is all angsty and arrogant... It reminds me of Akito from Fruits Basket... ...*on topic!!*
Many of the sub-characters are interesting, and though many have sad endings, it adds to this thought in your mind. Their stories all add up to the main story theme throughout the game. Ameena's story was the most interesting for me.
STORY: Really engrossing. The story is complex, and makes you want to advance the story to see what happens next

Overall, this game is really entertaining and fun if you're patient enough. The story should have you engrossed, though there are times where you may lose track of it...

Pros:
-Good story
-Likable Characters
-Battle System
-Item Creation System can be fun when you create good stuff and synthesize it to your weapons

Cons:
-Sometimes long cutscenes
-You probably should have a fair amount of patience...
-The game takes a long time to finish... (May also be counted as a pro...)

Awesome Japanese RPG - outshines Final Fantasy and Xenosaga

I am a big fan of epic Japanese RPGs like the Final Fantasy series, however, I had never played any of the Star Ocean titles until now. This game surpasses recent Final Fantasies and far surpasses Xenogears. With non-random, true real-time battles, fast screen transitions, skippable cutscenes, and (for a Japanese game) relatively non-linear gameplay, Star Ocean Till the End of Time simply excels. With 4 difficulty modes (one is unlockable and one is hidden), multiple endings that depend on your choices from the very beginning of the game, and a battle trophy subquest that transfers between games, Star Ocean TTEOT also offers more replayability than the average Japanese RPG. This game is highly recommended for RPG fans.

A shining star in a sea of lackluster RPG's

Most of the RPG's lately aren't exactly great. While you do have certain games that are great, you get average ones that are ok for awhile then they just get old. I'm one of the few that actually didn't like the new Shadow Hearts(check many game sites, they praise it to death), Star Ocean was a lot funner and more interesting.

Fayt and his childhood friend are vacationing on a planet called Hyda IV, a beautiful resort planet. He spends all his time playing battle simulators rather than on a beautiful beach with a young girl in a bikini but okay. The planet is under attack by a race called the Vendeeni and they escape but he's separated from his parents and Sophia. He finally ends up on Elicoor II, a Renaissance Era-like planet that has 2 warring nations: Airyglyph and Aquaria. Fayt and some friends become involved in the war and finds out more than he wanted.

The graphics to me are more colorful than Shadow Hearts II but not as sharp as FFX. It reminds me of Xenosaga in it's look. The characters(especially the women) look kind of the same with their bug eyes. The FMV's are great to look at though.

The music is so-so. Some have great Celtic type music or folk while others are these horrible rock/metal things. In dungeons, rather than eerie music or calm music, you have these awful...things. The voice acting is about 2/3rd's good. There's always some overacting or bad timing, while some voices like Clair, Albel or Maria fit while others like Farleen do not.

The gameplay is where it really shines though. Battles are in real-time rather than turned based like Kingdom Hearts but easier to see and you hit 2 buttons for light or hard hits while being able to do special moves. If you want to switch characters, just one press of a button switches to another party member while the one you had goes on Autopilot and the computer controls it. Sometimes I noticed that Fayt just stood there if I switched characters though. One nice change is going to a menu stops the battle so you could get a potion(they're berries actually) while in Kingdom Hearts you had to do it all in the fight which gave the opponent opportunity to hit you.

The Item Creation system(like the Synthesis in Final Fantasy VIII or in Star Ocean 2) is so complicated chances are you won't bother with it. Yet this is where you get all the best weapons. Go figure. The dungeons here are HUGE. Chances are you've cleared 2-3 entire floors yet you've only gotten 30% of the map done(you start with a small portion of the map visible but moving around allows you to see more of it with a percentage meter at the bottom telling you how much of it is visible). While this makes the game challenging, it's also hard to go back and re-stock on items if you're running out.

Despite the creation system, challenge and voice acting/music, it's an incredibly interesting game that is easy to get into.

A thoroughly and well developed game

Star Ocean: Till the End of Time (henceforth known as SOTET)is a role-playing game where you command the fate of Fayt (pun intended) Leingod, a college student from earth in the distant future. Galactic confrontations force Fayt to separate from his loved ones, and Fayt must survive as many people attempt to capture him for unknown reasons.
There are many things that are enjoyable in the game:
1) The battle is real-time, and not turn based. If you want a change in pace, this might interest you.
2) The item creation feature in the game allows you to develop weapons, armor, accessories, food, and medicine. Not only can you create weapons and armor, but you can make what you have stronger.
3) The game has many twists and turns, and multiple endings to achieve. Different plays through the game yield changing character dialogues, different playable characters, and thus different battle tactics.
4) The voice acting in the game is good, particularly in the cases of Cliff Fittir and Albel Nox (I'm pretty sure he's Albedo in the Xenosaga games), as well as Nel, all playable characters.
5) The game is long and it has replay value so that you can create a totally different party, set of items, events, and decisions in your second and third quests.

I highly recommend this game to any and all RPG enthusiasts.

This is a great game, made all the better by being the first epic non-strategy rpg on the ps2 in quite a while. There are a few issues, however. First, it's supposed to be a sci-fi rpg. However, it spends about half the game in medieval settings. It seems like a subplot, as it doesnt do anything to advance the main story. Actually, it seems like Fayt and co. have all the time in the world while they are slumming in the dark ages, without anything important happening. I mean, bandits in a local forest? A mini game in which you control a mine cart-pulling giant turtle? Still, in spite of the rather lengthy detour, the game is fun to play. The battle system from the second game has been modified to be both faster and more complex, and it was pretty good even on ps1. The voice acting is decent, even if the dialogue is sometimes rather lame. A minor problem is that you quite frequently cannot hear the voices over the background music during cutscenes. All in all, this is a worthwhile game. It's just that it could have been a spectacular game if they had concentrated more on the science fiction aspects. But I suppose an interval on a low-tech planet was necessary to pick up low-tech characters. One final note- it would have been nice to have a few cameos from star ocean 2, but at least they have Lenneth from valkyrie profile.

A Must Play

When i first popped in Star Ocean Till the end of time i'll admit i wasn't entirely impressed. The first area of the game was mind numingly boring, and the tutorial was way to long. However unlike alot of first impressions this was way off the mark.

Once you manage to work your way through the first hour of dredgery S.O. takes off like a freaking rocket. The storyline is very enganging and kept me playing well into the night. I usually don't play games much longer then an hour or so at a time but by the time i went to sleep after the first day of playing i already was a good 8 hours into it.

A large part of the reason this game is so addictive is the near flawless combat system. For those you played star ocean the second story it's very similar - but with a much more realistic flow (a well timed attack by an enemy isn't going to result in a chain of 20 plus hits that are unavoidable - which sometime happened in the last S.O. game). Also timing your attacks becomes even more critical. With the combination of weak attacks (which are often blocked by a stagnant enemy) and much stronger but hard to land attacks (which can't be blocked if they connect) the game provides a substantial level of challenge (button mashing isn't going to work in this real time RPG) The boss fights provide alot of challenge and substance and simply are very enjoyable.

If you enjoyed the sci fi elements of the last S.O. intermixed with the fantasy/medevil aspects then you will find more of the same here.

So far i've enjoyed the latest installment of the S.O. saga even more then i did the last. The game deserves 5 stars because it delievers everywhere that it counts.

So, I finally got around to actually buying the game the other day. I haven't completed it, but so far.....WOW!

The graphics in this game are amazing, top notch in my opinion.

The music....is beautiful. Simply put. AMAZING!

The controls for this game? Well...it takes a bit of time to get used to. Your character only runs or walks, and he's hard to control in small spaces due to the way he runs, but once you get used it, it doesn't bother you anymore.

The battle system....if you've played other Star Ocean games, the system will be familiar. I'm used to it, and they have just tweaked the controls a bit, otherwise, it's basically the same.

The story...well, since I haven't completed the game yet, I don't know quite yet, but so far it's pretty good.

If you liked the others, you'll love this one!!!

A refreshing RPG for the console.

First off, I must say that the story in Star Ocean III is OUTSTANDING. I really like how the plot developes and the characters interact. At first, I found the voice acting to be a bit annoying, but got used to it rather quickly. The humor is also pretty good, as well. The maps are very large and leave for a lot of exploration. Usually the rewards are special treasures (not includeing the "map completion prizes.) You'll be playing this game for a while, which is good! It's fun and has great plot, character interactions and a nice battle system!

For years I've been thinking that the game designers who make RPG's should change up the way they do combat. Random encounters with a turn-based has really been getting old. Fortunately this game has changed that! If you're quick, you can usually avoid most encounters! And the battles are realtime, so there's a bit more activity to partake in. Very nicely done!

There are a lot of characters to choose from. Each one has his or her own weakenesses and strengths. The main chracter, over all, is pretty balanced. The designers have put a bit of thought into how you can increase your characters abilities and stats, which leaves some room for customization. I'm sure there's an optimal way to play, but the game really doesn't force you to do it!

In summary, this game is a blast, and should be part of any RPG fans collection.

FANBOYS, SILENCE!

I'm going to take a different approach to reviewing for a change, and make a checklist for Star Ocean 3 here. Why? Because I've never seen a more cliched rpg since Final Fantasy 7, and it pains me to know that I've played it, not having any way of removing it from memory any time soon.

Main Characters:
1- Obnoxious teenage hero and heroine, highly adept at being pathetic, annoying, stupid, needlessly brooding, and over-dramatic. CHECK
2- Annoying hyperactive girl: CHECK
3- Annoying boy who pisses everyone else off: CHECK
4- Strong, independant, female magic user: CHECK (x2)
5- Obligatory lone-wolf swordsman who uses a katana: CHECK

Central Plot:
1- Hero from futuristic society, stranded on medival-esque world: CHECK
3- Hero is the son of some important/famous person: CHECK
3- Some sort of Underdeveloped Planet Protection Treaty to worry about: CHECK
4- Plot later winds up in place with ultimate technology: CHECK
5- Some group of people in this place are making sinister plans: CHECK
6- Fate of the universe ultimately at stake: CHECK
7- Your group is the only people who have a prayer of succeeding: CHECK
8- The plot gives you a chance to stop off at an amusement park: CHECK

In Battle:
1- Realtime, free moving battles: CHECK
2- Game has more characters than you are allowed to have in battle: CHECK
3- Characters not in battle DON'T get any experience: CHECK
4- Wide variety of colorful, amusing dialogue: CHECK
5- Wide variety of colorful, annoyingly repetitive dialogue: CHECK
6- Frequently stupid AI actions: CHECK

Private Actions:
1- Often in places that are nowhere near where you're supposed to go: CHECK
2- Few (if any) for some of the main characters: CHECK
3- Romance/friendship ratings that can be influenced: CHECK
4- Have to be a jerk unless you want the hero and heroine to pair up: CHECK
5- Nowhere near enough of them: CHECK

Item Creation:
1- Annoyingly random process: CHECK
2- Can reload your game without having to reset the console: CHECK
3- No way in hell you'll get any of the good stuff w/o the strategy guide: CHECK
4- Still pretty cool, nonetheless: CHECK

Other Details:
1- The game's currency - cheerfully accepted everywhere you are: CHECK

I pity those who feel they have to love the game just becasue of the developer's formerly great track record. Stick with the first two Star Ocean games, and leave it at that.

Promising but irritating

I loved Final Fantasy X and X-2. I bought Star Ocean because I wanted something to tide me over until XII.

I'm sorry to say that I couldn't make myself continue to play past the first couple of hours. I enjoyed the introductory visuals (with the ships changing to progressively more advanced ships), but the dialog is tiring and endless. Yes, FFX had that problem at times, but it was still engaging.

Maybe it gets better later on, but for the period of time I played it, it constantly took over and just started talking and talking and talking. That might be nice if the story was engaging, but I was definitely not drawn in. When I played FFX, I was drawn into it from the start. The same is not true of this game.

The combat system is interesting and might well turn out to be fun, but it's not worth it if the story isn't going to improve.

If you enjoy all anime (even the cheesy stuff) then maybe you'll find enjoyment here. I didn't.
