I just started recently playing HL2 again because I put together a new rig, and I have to tell you it is far from showing its age. What a phenomenal game and engine this is. This game has one of the best storylines and endings ever. The fishbowl game Bioshock has nothing on this.
The graphics are still amazing by today's standard. And when you install the FakeFactory Cinematic Mod v4, the only game that will surpass this visually is Crysis. The facial and mouth animations are still unmatched. The engine could use an update with new and more advanced shadowing, but that's it.
Also, I think steam is great. A couple of my HL2 CDs have become unreadable, but thankfully the cd-key is registered to my account so I am able to download this as many times as I want. Very convenient.
A true masterpiece

The title says it all. There is simply no aspect about the game itself that is lacking (the Steam bit is another story, but most of the posters have already commented on that; I intend to review the game itself). I found myself totally immersed and in shock of just how much detail and thought and depth they put into this game.
What sets it apart from other, more conventional games is this:
1. Graphics that will astound literally anybody (even today, years after the game's release. I still feel that HL2 has the best graphics in the history of video games). The physics engine still leaves me incredulous; everything is amazingly life-like in its reactions. Whatever would happen in real life, will 99% of the time happen in the game.
2. An excellent, followable and understandable plotline that engages the player, yet leaves some parts unanswered so that the player is begging to know more. You WANT to progress in the game so you can learn more about the story and what is to come.
3. The requirement for the player to use his head when it comes to the puzzle-solving that is as much of an integral part of the game as the combat. This is no mindless shoot-em-up flick!
4. The gameplay itself. The game is surprisingly easy and simple to learn and play, a great choice for new and veteran players alike. Although it will challenge all players, it is not difficult to the point of being frustrating and irritating.
In short, the people at Valve have created what can truly be called a masterpiece and an instant classic, a game that (once again!) redefined first-person-shooters forever. It truly is the best game ever made, bar none (until Half-Life 3 comes out!). Buy this and Episode One, which has even better graphics!
lots of potential but ultimately disappointing.

oh dear, half-life 2 ... what an amazing game, right? not really, but it sure could have been. the graphics, the story, the guns and shooting action are all amazing. so what's wrong? 3 things.
1. helicopters. these things suck big time. i wish they weren't even in the game. you have to shoot them down with rockets, which seems cool except it's quite hard to hit them. i'm not making excuses for being a bad gamer. it's just that it's literally hard to know how to aim.. or even whether to aim at all, since the rocket twirls around and seeks out the chopper, but then the chopper turns around and shoots down your rocket. i have shot down helicopters, but it would be hard for me to explain to you how exactly i did it. do you aim straight on? aim off to the side? try to shoot closer, farther away, higher up? i don't know if anyone knows. that's why i quit playing this freakin' game. it was frustrating enough to get through 2 lengthy helicopter battles, but then when there was YET ANOTHER ONE, i just couldn't believe it. what a waste. not to mention, for a game that's supposed to be so creative, it's just doing the same thing over and over again with the choppers.
2. puzzles. now if you like puzzles and can figure them out, good for you, you'll like the puzzles. but if you're more of an FPS fan like me and don't like puzzles, you're not gonna like this stuff. i figured out the simple ones, but hey when i come across a wall of wood in the middle of a road with a wire overhead, i really don't know what's goin' on. i end up looking on the internet for the walkthrough for this stuff, and i don't like having to consult walkthroughs. to me it's just a waste of time trying to figure out some puzzle for a long time.
3. pacing/lack of action. IMO, half-life 2 drops the ball here. now i can understand wanting a breather after action sequences. also i know gordon freeman is trying to escape so he has to travel.. but it's just travel on a vehicle, then get into a fight over and over again. why even bother with all these travelling parts? it just doesn't seem right to me. also when you get into a gunfight against enemies, it doesn't last long and the threat doesn't seem large. there are many games where you feel more like you're taking on a group of enemies. hl2 is lacking in action and a sense of urgency and threat that gets your pulse high.
i think half-life 2 is just pretty unfulfilling and a waste of time. it's "supposed" to be a FPS, but it's really not because of the pacing, puzzles and lack of action. i'd rather play something like doom 3 or quake 4. they have stories too, but not the wastes of time.
as for the multiplayer, it's fun but the rockets are probably too overpowering.
Very good Mr. Freeman!

Ever since I first Slumped the Specimine into the the anti-Mass Spetromitor in the first game. I've been addicted to Half-life. and found that leaving me with more questions then answers worked when this game first came out.
I was ungry for more! and more is just what I got... More action, More cool weapons to play with, and yes... More Questions then answers.
But this time around. the characters and allies in the game tore my heart out and tugged on them so hard tat i emotionally connected to teir plights. Then again their rebal AI was pretty bad. I ended up not caring if the NPC folled me or not and if they did, I tended to lead them into a mine field or two before I did anything more important later.
Still the game was fun fast and action packed. I loved swinging the Crowbar once more and a new gagit like the gravity gun was great too.
The beginning of a gaming empire

Simply great. Works on many older PCs. There are tons of associated titles and mods available. And you cannot seriously plan on playing the HL2 episodes unless you have played this game. The story alone would make a great book or movie. The game is the best and is already a classic!
Well worth it

This is one of the best games every made. If you don't have it, buy and take a week off work and play it until your job/money/girlfriend situation needs attention. It come with Counter strike, a super fast online shooter. Very addicting. Great graphics & physics. It'll run on your old computer and won't require a powerhouse to enjoy great graphics. This game was the best when it came out and still is not outdated. Well worth the money, you'll enjoy it if you like sci-fi, shooters, online multi-player shooters, puzzles. This has a plot, and comes with Counter strike if you dont feel like getting emerged and just want to play. Oh, and it comes with a size XL black t-shirt. sweeeet
