Undoubtedly the best game for PS3 so far!

From the very beginning this game grabs you. You're thrust into the role of Nariko as she awaits the closure of an epic battle over an ancient and powerful weapon held by her clansmen, the Heavenly Sword. You immediately take control of Nariko with barely any instruction on what to do as hordes of enemies bear down on you. On-screen cues quickly appear telling you to hit certain buttons at the right time and if you do so you are rewarded with fluid, fast combination attacks that are not only devastating to your foes but also beautiful in a frightening way.
From there the game just gets better. The true fighting begins a few cutscenes later as you learn the backstory and pretty soon you find yourself in combat again...but this time your don't have the Heavenly Sword! It's a bit dismaying at first, there are no great combos with the longsword you have, you can't juggle an opponent in the air or execute an aerial combo, there are no superstyle attacks, and you have only one fighting stance. You can however still counter attacks for some beautiful displays of power. Later you are thrust into the role of Kai, the archer and here you learn to master the art of "Aftertouch" using the Six-Axis controller (by far the best use of said feature and the most accurate).
You might think that the game plays much like Dynasty Warriors or Bladestorm, but you'd be wrong. There is enormous variety in the combo attacks you can execute making the game nearly infinitely replayable. You'll find yourself saying "Oh My God" the first time you see Nariko execute "Blade of the Devil", "Stolen Kiss", or "Heaven's Spiral" (trust me you'll have to play the game to get the full depth of these moves!).
And to make the game even more varied there are times when you are forced to use the Aftertouch feature (you have been practicing) to advance, whether it's annihilating catapults with a cannon or throwing a shield at a gong to trigger a gate, its a great way to make a player become more comfortable to what could otherwise be a major crux for the game. Also the missions where you take control of Kai offer you a break from the hack and slash style of Nariko (not that you'll want the break, trust me). There are even scenes where you must carefully press the analog stick in the right direction or hit the correct button in the correct sequence to advance. Don't worry if you fail though, the sequences remain the same and you can easily get it the second time. The one downside to it is that you are usually so busy watching the screen to see the cues that you miss the awesome action sequences Nariko is executing on your behalf!
GRAPHICS - ****
This game is incredible in 720p, though I would have loved to see Nariko in 1080p.
SOUND - ***
There isn't a lot to the sound, the musical score is beautiful however though with all the attention you have focused on Nariko and executing her moves you can easily miss it.
GAMEPLAY - *****
There is no doubt that you will likely become frustrated at points with the game ("why can't I get an aerial combo!" is a common cry I hear from friends learning to play) but after a few hours of play you'll find yourself throwing dead bodies at your foes and smashing through a foe's shield with a devastating "Angel's Fury".
Good game

I've never seen a game this beautiful. Background graphics are cinematic and breathtaking. The details are amazing; hairs flowing as the character runs, the clothes wave as the winds blow, and most impressive is the way light reflects and makes shadows on every object and surface in great detail -- just amazing. Almost looks like pre-rendered ray-traced 3D CG animation (it's not) happening on-the-fly as you play. To top it all off, game play is fast-moving and fun with no boring moments. If you have a PS3, this is definitely the game to own to show off its prowess.

This is by far my favorite PS3 game of all time. The acting is top notch, the dialog is superb, the story keeps you interested, the characters are colorful and original, the graphics are stunning, the controls are easy to learn. There is so much about the game I love. You will get attached to the characters. - it's not just a hack n' slash game for the sake of it. You truly get immersed. My favorite bad guy character was Flying Fox. He was so funny! Of course, Nariko kicks major butt and she's not some gratuitously drawn cartoon with ridiculously large bosoms like many of the female protagonists in video games. I played this game twice and it was fun learning more and more of the special combos that Nariko is capable of. This is a truly outstanding game.
Great short game

This game is short, but a lot of fun. It uses the six axis controls really well in the sniper type missions and I found the overall gameplay rather enjoyable.
The voice-acting talent is outstanding, especially for the main antagonist. I will say for that reason alone this game will remain in my collection and will not be traded in.
Overall I give this game a 4 out of 5.
Heavenly game!

It's a beautiful game with excellent visuals, exciting music, and great action! The action never seems to stop and the story is very fast paced. The game can be thought of as the female version of God of War. In the easy mode, all the enemies are easy to beat. You may, however, find it difficult to beat some of the final level bosses. But with some practice, you should be able to pull it off. The war scenes (gameplay) is just phenomenal.
In this game, you get to guide your arrows or missiles by using the SixAxis controller. This in itself is a great feature. This is a game from the slasher genre and your hands will start to pain after some time because of the constant button mashing. Again, let me stress that the game has excellent visual appeal.
The gameplay is short but you won't find it boring to play this game multiple times. If you are looking for a slasher game with some puzzles, then this game is for you. My recommendation is to go for this and include it in your PS3 collection. By far, one of the best games I have played on a PS3.
Short but good

Excellent graphics, very well done characters and voice acting. Great cutscenes. Great use of the six-axis. Good checkpoint/savepoint system (you'll never lose more than about 10 minutes of played time). Those are the good points about this game.
Short (I'm bad at action games and finished this in like 7 hours playtime), no real replay value, and repetitive combat are the bad points.
Makes for an excellent rental.
Fantastic game that's over too soon

Wow. This game was amazing. I bought it because I liked the graphical style and wanted to see what Andy Serkis would bring to his role in the game's development. I was blown away by the dramatic storyline and fun gameplay. This is what next gen gaming should be about. This game couldn't have been done, at least not nearly as well, on the previous generation of consoles.
I have the same gripe that everyone else does, and that is that the game is short. However, I am happy that is isn't needlessly padded. I'd rather have an excellent short game than an okay long game. Adding additional "chapters" to the story might have caused the game's momentum to slow and the game to feel repetitive. It's like a book. Some stories take 200 pages to tell, while others can only be told with 1000 or more. Game length shouldn't be dictated by some arbitrary decision, but rather based on the story and game mechanics.
It saddens me to see that Ninja Theory has left this franchise beyond to work on something different. Whoever Sony gets to do the next game in this series has their work cut out for them. I hope they're up to the challenge though, because this is a franchise that I'd like to see continue.
Not to shabby

This was a very good game but short as hell. I'm really tired of paying $60 dollars for these short as games. This game would have been even better if was about 6 more hours long. By the time I was really into it, it was over. The graphics are beautiful but I think the character models could have been more detailed. I think the developers focused more on the enviroment instead.(Don't ask why, drink Bud Dry) The sixais worked really well with this game though. I was finally not ashamed to use the damn thing. Last but not least... the blocking. The blocking in this game was absoultely horrifying. The developers must have been smoking sh** rocks when creating a blocking system for this game. WTF?... OVER!! Come on guys! I know you want something new and fresh, but sometimes you just need to stick to the basics. Conan, on the other hand, was another short as* game but I think it was way better than Heavenly Sword. But hey, opinions are like assh**es, everyone's got one. Hope this review helps you out.
WAY TOO MUCH EMPHASIS ON THE SIXASIS CONTROLLER!

Heavenly Sword, for me,was a HUGE disapointment.First,I will state that good,as I believe this game could have been amazing;maybe even perfect.
1.)Gorgeous graphics, beautiful cinematics and terrific voicework.
2.)Outstanding epic battles very similar to Dynasty Warriors or more recently Genji for PS3.Terrific battle/action cinemas tied with button choreography.Example:rapidly push X to run across the falling rope,or push analog stick in the directions show to to jump up the cliff.
Now the severely unfortunate which lead to a HUGE letdown.
1.)Many times you are switched to Kai,an assasin, and you must "guide" the arrows into your targets via the sixaxis controller. This may sound cool, but to be perfectly frank, the controller just doesn't work very good.
There will be plenty of times where the arrow JUST misses the target. You also have to go through this with the cannonball/catapult misson. These missions also have the teeth grinding torture of adding a time limit and if you cannot complete the goal of the misson before the time runs out, or Shen gets killed etc. you get the dreaded instant GAME OVER screen.
To me,that's a huge step backwards in video games to just add all-or-nothing type elements to a game.
It's extremely annoying and you will become enraged with frustraion. The back of the case for this game never said that you would have to complete "aim at the target sniper" missions like this.Had I known,I never would have paid as much money as I did for this.
2.)It feels as though the game developers FORCED the sixaxis controller into the game rather than just letting it come natural,or give the option of whether you want to use it or not.Personally,I think it would have been alot easier and less aggrivating if you just guided the projectile using the analog stick rather than the sixaxis motion.
Many times the extremely cool battles just stop so you have to solve the "puzzle" by flinging a shield at a switch.Just think how this affects the game:" Yeah,I love fighting in this game and killing all these warriors!.... oh.... it's time to hit the switch and open the door.
3.)There are certain attack styles that can cancel out the attacks of your foes;I think speed against power and vice versa.Well, it's hard to know when to switch back and forth when the attacks are coming at you a mile a minute.Oh sure, the attacks are surrounded by a different color aura, but it still doesn't help when you haven't even got your finger on the alternate attack button yet... yes,it's that fast
Also there are many times when all the enemies will do is BLOCK!You can attack them ten thousand times...and still...they JUST BLOCK! HOW ANNOYING!
4.)The total gameplay is only around 6-8 hours;not at all worth the price that I paid.I think that when games are being sold for as much money as they are, there should be a requirement for the gameplay to last AT LEAST 20 hours.I don't care how beautiful the graphics are.Beautiful graphics alone does not make a great game;in fact,it doesn't even make a good game.
There are alot of great ps1 and ps2 games out there that can average 40 to 60 hours of gameplay. They just don't make 'em like they used to.I guess it's just the new generation that has to have the "oooooooo" and "ahhhhh" effects of eye candy to replace other important elements.
I am going to contact Sony and demand a refund.First of all because they mislead the consumers on what type of game this is,and second because the game was a rushed product with such a short value of gameplay.
I've only played my copy once, and I don't want it in my collection. If there are enough fanboys out there to keep this game and praise it because of how Nariko looks (which is a pretty lame excuse),then they can do so.But I'm not going to support a below average product at an above average price.
