In the first game you played a miner in a mine on Mars. You are treated badly. When your not in your suiut or bed another miner is. So you decide to revolt. You plan it and you must execute it. It combined the use of Geo-mod technology, special vechicals that can alter surroundings, with great weapons. All this is just in single player mode. In multiplayer mode you and one friend can battle against four bots in several terrains.
This game is a step ahead of what I just told you. It is a more strategy based game, don't get me wrong you still get to pull out the guns and kill a few guys. There are also double the number of weapons. There is even an improvement in multiplayer mode, it is now FOUR PLAYERS. Now you and three of your friends can fight it out. I think this game is great!!! I give it SIX STARS!!!
Good, not great.

Well, it's here. One of the most hyped-up games I have seen. I played this with high hopes, because the original RF was great. With a Geo-mod engine that allows you to blow up everything, and chip away at walls, it is really something that will revolutionize the FPS games as we know them. However, this game isn't all that great. It has many problems. I thought it was strange when this game's rival, Time Splitters 2, was released, people immediately compared these two titles, before RF2 was even released. Right now, my feelings are that TS2 is a better value then RF2.
The good:
The graphics in this game are very well done, with detailed enemies and environments. Lighting and textures are great, explosions always seeming to be better than one might expect. Guns look fantastic, and the single player level designs are well developed. These graphics are very good, being some of the best the PS2 has to offer.
Also, the overall feeling of the gun play is good. There are many guns in this game, which gives you an arsenal of destruction, to basically blow away enemies. This is very fun, as the sound and feeling of the futuristic guns adds for a better gaming experience.
As far as the single player gameplay, it is good. The level designs for the single player missions are great, and actually makes you think about stuff, before you go in there blazing with that big pretty machine gun. You will have to use your head, because some objects may need a well-placed satchel grenade, in order for you to complete your objectives. Also, the vehicle missions where you get to fly around in a gunship, wreck havoc in a tank, or walk around in a mech, are great. Its always fun to blow up an entire army with a machine gun and rocket launcher with unlimited ammo.
The Bad:
This game is so short, I completed it in one sitting on easy mode. And since there isn't much replay value, as your heroic meter never seems to change (a little meter that can decide your ending), and since basically everything is unlocked after you complete the game once. It took me another day to beat the game on Medium setting. And it wasn't more challenging, it was simply more enemies, less health pick ups. There aren't any new objectives added to the difficulty level. It's just the same as the easy difficulty. This game also plays very, very slow. The character moves so slow, the action moves slow, even the machine guns fires slowly. Compared to it's rival, Time Splitters 2, this game is like a slug. The story line, was a bit over hyped, with only a few twists, and it was way too predictable. Also, enemy AI is insanely stupid. Some enemies will run off scared if they get shot once, but come back to get killed again. I mean, in all honesty, if you're gonna run away, run away! Would everyone simply come back with a new found heroic courage, after being scared to death a second before? It seems that way in this game. Also, the way enemies lean against walls and "hide" is almost funny. Enemies will lean against corners, with half of their body sticking out. It's so funny, it's almost cruel to shoot the exposed half. Enemies also have no idea how to use grenades effectively. During the cathedral mission (I won't give away spoilers), when I ducked into part of a room to recover my health, the enemy kept throwing the same grenade, in the same place, getting nothing. I just sat in the corner as my health recovered, laughing as the enemy threw the same type of grenade, which landed in the same place, doing nothing, over and over again. The people who made this should have really refined the AI.
Then, there is the multi-player mode. Simple math, slow game play + poor AI bots + poor multiplayer level design = bad multiplayer experience. TS2 blows away RF2 in this department. The levels in the multiplayer in this game are so bad. The game maps are small, unimagitive, bland, with few twists besides being able to blow up the occasional weak wall. The maps in this game try to be fast paced in action, but always fall short. It's as if they took the same box, added some ramps, added some teleport places, and some flag points. Also, the fact that only 6 players (4 players, 2 bots) can be in one map, which gives you 3v3 CTFs, is a big draw back. The maps would be more fun if 8 or 10 players could be in a map. Maps and multiplayer gameplay are so slow, this is a horrible multiplayer game. The basic FPS shopping list is here, with no true twists to the genre. "Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Arena, Team Arena, Capture The Flag, Bagman, and 'Regime' ". You can find all these modes in basically any FPS out there now, which makes this game not worth the multiplayer time.
Conclusion:
While not a bad game, it's not one of the best. TS2 is much better than this game, although this game does deserve a rental, and maybe even a buy, once the price drops from $50. The Geo-mod engine is something that every FPS should have, and the graphics, gunplay, and sound are good points in this game. However, with a short amount of gameplay time, low replay value, a low challenge, poor enemy AI bots, and a horrible multiplayer, this game falls short. You should check this game out, but if you want some real value for your bucks, I suggest Time Splitters 2.
Total disapointment

I couldn't be a bigger fan of the original Red Faction. It was also a highly rated, well-respected game in the gaming community. So why the game designers decidedly to completely change the format is a complete mystery to me. Instead of being a lone fighter occasionally joined by others (who usually didn't do much) RF2 has you as part of a squad, and the other members get to do the fun stuff (one's a sniper, one's a pilot, etc.), so much of the game plays itself. Also, the game pops in so many enemies one after another, it seems like a simple shooter game like Houses Of The Dead, or whatever. It's just ludicrous; the original was based in realty--there were a finite number of guards at given scenes, for example. Not this game.
If there was no Red Faction to preceed this, I'd have given it a better review. The grafix are cool, and the celeb voices are neat. But this game is not only confusing re: game control and the like, the worst part of it is it's just DIFFERENT than the original.
we want you, for the red faction!

Should've Been Called Red "Fraction"

First of all, let me start out by saying that I
absolutely loved the original Red Faction. I gave
it 5 stars. So, I expected this sequel to be even
better than the first...NOT!!! Sure, you can just
about blow everything up, but that's where the
sweetness ends.
My best piece of advice when playing this game:
RELOAD OFTEN. The enemies take a rediculous
amount of punishment before they croak. I basically
used the one weapon which fires three short bursts,
one to knock off the helmet (if he's wearing one),
and two more for a facial. Unless it's an explosive
weapon, the others are useless unless you want to
receive major damage in the process. There's very
little time to take a breather, so be ready to do a
lot of fighting.
I liked being able to fight along with team members,
except that my actions didn't quite determine their
longevity. I could sit there and do nothing while t
hey're getting shot at and it wouldn't matter. So
much for teamwork. The vehicles and battle suits you
get to use are ok, but infrequent.
Size does matter. I finished this game way too quickly,
partly because it's very short and partly because I
wanted to move on to 007 Nightfire. I had to use a
cheat code to beat the final boss because the fight
is unfair and the health doesn't seem to span when it's
supposed to.
By my title, I suggested this game should've been called
Red "Fraction" because it's partially fun compared to the
first edition. Too bad I bought it. I'll keep it until
I need to make space for more video games and gladly sell
it. Good rental, but don't put it underneath the Christmas
tree as a present. Try the fireplace instead.
Alright THQ, let's get real.

What were they thinking? It has little next to nothing to do with the Red Faction, which what was the original was all about. There is no real POINT to the game. and with all the twists and turns, you don't know if you're the good guy or the bad.
And if all this isn't bad enough, they make it short. you can beat it in a two day time span. This is not worth [$$] I can assure you that much.
While the game is somewhat fun, it is basically a different game. It only slightly mentions Red Faction a couple of times. You see a character or two of the Red Faction, and that's about it.
The game doesn't take place on Mars either. That was half the thrill of the other one. You don't really know what your going to run into in mines that are underground in Mars.
The geo-mod in this game is okay, but there is a lot of mesh wiring under most surfaces, making it impossible to pass through.
Rent this before you consider buying it. It will save you a heart attack wallet wise.

Puff, then play Red Faction II's Dictator (or deathmatch if you haven't unlocked dictator) while enjoying Amnesiac on a great system with intense stereo. By the third song you've entered a new state of consciousness and can fold space like the guys in Dune. The single player was ok, but I'm addicted to the multiplayer games (even though I just play against the bots). Great mix of weapons, good environments and character models. With just great solid gameplay. Good Shtuff!

Red Faction 2 is a somewhat better game than the original, but the way the game is laid out reminds me of Half-Life (which is a disappointing FPS). The graphics are much better and are quite spectacular. The character models are also exceptionally done for all characters. I do like the addition of double-handed weapons. The environments are quite spectular -- and visually quite realistic. The multiplayer arenas this time are also well-done in my opinion. They levels remind me of the game "W.A.R." in the arcades. Lastly, the cinemas are quite a show.
Now to the really ugly part. This time though the story is not as involved as first. You are not pulled into the storyline per se in first person. The team-based concept is still not quite developed per se. Lastly, motivation in continuing is lacking after the second part.
Overall, this is a better than average game. However, unlike the first, this game functionally is much better as a multiplayer title than the first. For the first Red Faction, you are pulled into the story as a FPS.
This should have been much better

They did some things right that need to be done more often, like the controller setup left joystick moves forward/back strafe left/right, dual weapons with separate firing, dual weapons in general are good separate firing is something I had not seen before, use of grenades without switching from your guns to them, (kinda like halo), and the geo mod thing is interesting but was never a selling point for me on this or the first.
These improvements are very nice but they do not make up for its flaws, they seem to devolve from some of the best things red faction one;
Playtime and challenge
The length of 2 is much shorter than one, one took a full week, and was challenging the entire time, 2 was beaten in less than 2 days and the only challenging parts were some of the bosses, which only you had to try it a couple of times before you killed them, and the final boss was easier than the boss right before him.
Story
The story of red faction one had all sorts of twists we kept thinking we just have to do this next thing and it will be over but no it kept a step ahead you and unveiling some new segment just when you thought you were done, two has the one predictable plot twist. In 2 you are the invincible soldier whose duty is to kill everyone he sees, and this is your main goal throughout the entire game. In one you have diverse goals which usually had killing, just as a necessity for trying to get there alive.
Gameplay
In one there were a number of places where you could not kill all the enemies and it was suicide to try, in 2 while you are constantly being told the building is about to explode you can nonchalantly hunt and kill everything you encounter. In 2 you are called a demolitions expert but you are really a grenadier, in fact the controlled bombs from red faction one are replaced with automatic timed ones in 2 and you just loaded with explosive weapons, you could use only grenades and rockets through just about the entire game. The Mission objective in 2 is to kill sokov and then molov, you might as well be super assasin, oh yes there are side quests they tend to be destroy all vehicles or something else only the invincible Alias(god that's a stupid name) can do. The levels which had been oddly shaped tunnels are gone in favor of completely straight roads and square buildings.
They took what I thought were innovative ideas in red faction, and forgot about them to make yet another fps whose only innovation is improved graphics. They should have called this something else since it has pretty much nothing to do with red faction one, other than have the politcal "radical" group called red faction which couldnt take over a lemonade stand, yet everyone acts like they are some dire threat, and this political group has nothing to do with the red faction miners that were in RED FACTION one. It should have had a name that was accurate like "Nano Soldier" and then I wouldnt have been quite so disappointed, but then it wouldnt have had any hype for being a sequel and would have had to stand up on its own, and admit to being another drone in the faceless pantheon of first person shooters.
I want a REAL sequel to red faction
Even more insanely violent fun

This sequel has little to do with the Red Faction of the original. Sadly, our hero Parker does not return to kill more bad people. Instead, you play one of the few remaining nano-beings that are being hunted down. I think. I don't remember the plot that well because after a while, it really doesn't matter. All you need to know who is to shoot in this game and that's fine.
They packed more action into this sequel, big time. Bigger guns, more guns, ridiculously fast and accurate computer opponents in 2pm bot mode that will have you swearing at the TV. Not only is there Deathmatch, but there are other variations, all of which involve a lot of killing.
If you liked Red Faction, and especially liked the 2pm mode, you'll get into this game. Keep in mind though, they upgraded the Deathmatch mode by basically jacking up all of the settings so that it moves at crackhead speeds at times. Your average life span on some boards is about 5 seconds before you get taken out by a railgun.
Anyway. If you like first-person shooters with a 2pm mode as well, and you like games that tell there's violence, blood, AND gore, then pick this baby up.
