Love R&C? You may not like Deadlocked

If you are a big fan of the Ratchet and Clank series; if you would list all three games in your top ten, then you probably won't like Ratchet: Deadlocked.

Ratchet: Deadlocked features around the popular arena battles from RC:GC and RC:UYA. I, for one, loved the arena battles in those games. But there is more than such a thing as too much. The entire game is an arena battle, with a few hoverbike and other vehicle missions thrown in.

Did you enjoy exploration? Love finding all of the gold/platinum/titanium bolts? Love the fun puzzles and the free roaming world? Well, you can forget about all of this. Ratchet: Deadlocked, is a shooter. The out-of-this-world weapons that made the first three games (suck cannon, morph-o-ray, rift inducer, etc) are almost non-existant in this version. Once you have completed the goal of the mission, there is no roaming, exploration, or enjoying the scenery. You are automatically thrown into the next mission.

Do I sound pessimistic? I am. This is the most boring R&C game of the series.

The only thing I do enjoy about Ratchet:Deadlocked is the weapon mods. The way the mods are designed, you can make hundreds of different weapons, having a lot of fun with each. It is a challenge to match the perfect mods to make an effective weapon.

If you are a huge gamer and you play hundreds of different games, you will probably not be bothered by the monotonous tone of this game. But if you are a big fan of platformers, without a lot of time to waste, then just replay the first three games, don't waste your money on this one.
I am not a huge gamer, I do not get to spend much time playing the Playstation. I do not recommend this game to people who were big fans of the original R&C, but more gamers with more time and money may enjoy Deadlocked.

Another fine Ratchet game

Ratchet and Clank has grown into one of my all time favorite video game series. The gameplay is always fun, the characters, story, and humor are always sharp, and it's just damn fun to blow stuff up.

Be warned though that this game is slightly different than the others in the series. There's still the cool weaponry and hyper action, still a fun attitude. But Deadlocked is a gladiator / combat mission kind of game with very little action-platform aspects. That means there's more fighting and less of everything else. Since I like a little more a/p, I prefer the previous R&C games, but it's still a blast.

Speaking of blasting, as usual you're loaded down with tons of cool weapons. And there's four different vehicles. There's also a couple of combat droids that you command in one player mode. There's a lot of strategy in the game, so it's not just blasting. It's blasting skillfully. The two player co-op mode is terrific fun to play with a friend.

My only complaint is the loss of Conquest mode in the versus game. I really liked that. It also made two player versus more playable. But I prefer co-op mode with two players anyway.

A must for action fans. Especially if they've got a good sense of humor.

Ratchet goes to the Colloseum

First and foremost, I absolutely love the R & C series. Ratchet himself is cute-but-not-too-cute, just butch enough to carry off his hardshooting lifestyle.

Sony must have found a lot of positive feedback about the arena battles from previous games in the series, because as others say, Deadlocked is mostly that.

There are two major areas to go - one is a shuttle to the arena, two is a shuttle to whichever planetary quest you're currently on. Two is still very much dodge and shoot, not as inventive and expansive as the earlier games, and you get the feeling that Deadlocked is rushing you. You're humming along and suddenly it's the last challenge and you're left wondering where all the game went. "Get moving and finish already!" you can almost hear it scream. Maybe it's a subleminal audio track.

Although the non-arena quests do offer some of what the former games had, they simply don't compare with their scope.

It is still great fun, though. I like the new weapons system and the fact that you can earn bolts quickly enough to get some serious firepower, unlike the earlier games where it took forever to buy and upgrade your hardware. At first I was annoyed that they had changed some of the controls (the first 3 worked essentially the same), but quickly got used to it. Also, I used the target-lock view instead of normal 3rd-person view for the first time and found myself preferring it (at least for Deadlocked).

So, should you buy? I suggest 'absolutely yes.' The humor is still there (although the announcer's comments can get repetive after you've played it through once), with one or two genuine laugh-out-loud moments, the weapons are great, the graphics are excellent, and the quests have some replay value. There are a few much more tolerable "race" type challenges, a hoverbike, a hovership and a dunebuggy, which is a good thing. I hate, hate, hate the races from previous games.

It's not as good as Up Your Arsenal, but then again, how could the Ratchet franchise top that?

Great, but one major problem

I was incredibly excited for the release of this game for I'm a big fan of the other Ratchet games. This is truly a great game. I picked the game up on 2 days ago and I've only put a few hours into it and I am extremely upset to say that I have already reached the last level. How upsetting! It could be that I am just incredible at the game but in more likely hood, Insomniac made the game to short and I was playing on the hardest level!! But don't let this discourage you, there is still much online gaming (Something I can;t take advantage of) and co-op mode. So I still reccomend picking up this game but be weary.

This game is really nice. Ratchet is captured to compete in an illegal game show run by Vox. Ive played through this game and there are both awesome qualities and some average things. If I could, I would have given this game 4.5 stars, but I like to round up.

Pros:
You get these two bodyguards that you can customize.
Your weapons can really become personalized. There are all kinds of different mods. There are mods which are mainly elemental mods, such as acid, lava, shock and others. And there there are mods that improve your weapons, such as a faster firing rate, a larger impact, and other things.
This game has an excellent replay value, just as much as the other R&C games.
There are A LOT of jokes in this one, some parodies that many people will not catch.

Cons:
If you didnt like the gameplay of the other R&C games, though it is improved here, you probably wont like this game.
Clank is not a playable character, now he is in the background helping you out.

Good, but please give us more of a story and more Clank next time!

I like Ratchet & Clank and I've got all four of the PSII games.
They're fun, funny, engaging, clever, witty, amusing, challenging and interesting.

This new game looks fantastic and the weapons are great.
The challenges are interesting, but I miss:
1. A good story.
2. Clank, who is only a minor character in this one.
3. Captain Quark, who has been developing into of R&C's most loveable and amusing characters.
4. A good story.

This current game has some excellent qualities but for a player with a normal TV and no broadband/cable internet connection it is pale in comparison to the other R&C games.

Please, please, please bring back the Ratchet & Clank of old - defending the galaxy and blowing up stuff and providing us with plenty of laughs along the way. Captain Quark is one of the best characters in the series, too, as well as Al, Helga and Skid.

Endless arena battles

Take the previous Ratchet and Clank games, remove the game parts, string together all the arena battles, and this is what you get.

In addition, the weapon upgrade system has hit the point of overcomplication, and the controls don't seem as effortless as they were in the Ratchet and Clank games; something just isn't right with the way the analog stick maps to turn speed.

Great graphics, yes. But that's not enough at this late stage in the PS2's life.

ya gotta love it!!!

THis is an awesome game. It allows cooperative play with a friend for all the levels in the single player mode, enabling you to have much more fun with the exciting game. It also has a new weapon system, where instead of just buying and upgrading a gun, you actually get to customize it to your own liking. Furthermore, this is a great game and I'm definitely looking forward to getting it some time soon.

Mike Jones! Who? Mike Jones! Who? Mike Jones!
Back then, they didn't want it, now i'm hot they all want it.

Ratched: Gladiator Marathon would be a better name

Take Ratchet & Clank 3, remove Clank, take out the Hacker puzzles and all the platforming, then keep the 'siege' events and the gladiator moments in and then remove 10 of the weapons from the game, throw Ratchet into some fancy robo suit, remove most of the characters and make the game be all about restless killing, fewer boss fights, shorter main game, better multiplayer/online mode, improve the graphics ans sound, give it a whole lotta mods, make the weapons dreadfully expensive, and make Ratchet be kidnapped by a complete lunatic. What do you get? Ratchet: Deadlocked if you haven't found out already.

As I said before, the graphics have been dramatically improved. Ratchet looks a lot more lethal (look at the cover for a hint) and the arenas look a lot more realistic than before. Note: Realistic in a sorta "The arenas were more unrealistic than a fifteen year old SNES game" kind of way. The charactersalso look better. After a hugely realistic (riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight) look in the original (and the best), Ratchet going Dexter's Laboratory realistic (and dressed) in the second one (The third best) and then being a mix of the original and the second one (not very good) in the third one (the worst in the series), Ratchet has finally gone back to his original state of graphical quality (translated from nerd speak: like he looked in R&C1) AND has been improved in graphical quality (Translation: He looks better).

The sound is a bit like the last game (which I'm still trying to get over with)except better. The voices are the same with the SFX not changing but the music is a lot better. And like in the last two games, Ratchet sounds like say... Knuckles The Echidna at the age of 13.

In non-graphical and non-sound matters (translation: Something that doesn't have anything to do with graphics or sound), the game itself is a lot deeper than the last game (which was increasingly shallow with each and every play), but alot shorter. But hold it. Lenght is not what you wanna hear about right? It's the weapons. The pride of the Ratchet series since well... the FIRST ONE!!! First up is the wrench which can be upgraded from a wrench to a full on wrench on FIRE!!! Then there are loads of dual vipers, exterminating bomb launchers, devastating mass demolition super weapons ans such. Also, if you have played the last two games, you have perhaps found out that Ratchet 2 had dreadful, uninspired and just plain boring arenas but the 3rd had awesome arenas. This one is like the third, only better.

It was also a sad thing not to see Darla Gratch returning but Courtney Gears, Dr. Nefarious and Lawrence all make hilarious re-appearances.
