No other game can match this one in terms of being truly astonishing. While Okami may not be as fun as some other titles such as Zelda or Final Fantasy, it comes very close, and puts the games to shame in terms of its artistic quality.
What makes Okami so special is its preservation of Ancient Japanese mythology and the Japanese culture in general through incredibly artistic graphics and an amazing ethnic-based soundtrack. Okami is the one and only game you can treat as both a piece of entertainment and a jewel.
Aspects of the game:
Plot-Great, especially with its historical and mythological accuracy. However, it is very predictable and not too intense. Then again, Zelda has never had a great plot either. Therefore I must say Okami's plot is about equal to the typical Zelda plot, with a little bit more creativity; it's no Final Fantasy plot though.
Gameplay-Good, but no Zelda. It is just too easy. If Okami were a more difficult game (only the bosses are fun to fight), it may perhaps be the greatest Adventure game ever made. The only reason Zelda is better is because its enemies are more challenging and there are more frequent puzzles that are more engaging. However, Okami's world is a whimsical and majestic one, more fun to explore than Hyrule in Zelda.
Graphics-The best ever. I'm sick and tired of games trying to have realistic graphics. I live in the real world and I hate it. Please, I need more creativity! Okami puts the other cel-shaded games to shame (Dragon Quest, Wind Waker, etc.); although I prefer cel-shaded to realism.
Music-Really cool and great to listen to. Awesome percussion and a great Oriental theme
Replay Value-Not as high as Zelda but certainly higher than Final Fantasy. The game is the perfect length.
Overall if you have a PlayStation and you miss this game (especially if you enjoy Zelda), then you're stupid.
Great Game

I really enjoyed this game. My only complaint is the long sequences of dialogue and cutscenes. There are a few parts later in the game where you sit through a long conversation about this or that, then you regain control, take a few steps, and fall into another cutscene. Overall, it is a great game.
Zelda + RPG = Okami

The game Okami seems to be a response to the game people hoped that Legend of Zelda The Wind Waker would have been and generally is a great adventure game using some Zelda-esque elements. It is basically a RPG in the form of an action adventure game. Instead of random battles you can see cursed pieces of parchment that you can avoid or run right into to fight. Instead of experience points for fighting (you only get money or items) you get 'thanks' for cleaning things up or making someone or something happy which you use to up your stats. There is a wide selection of weapons: shields, both offensive and defensive, shootable rosary beads, or swords to use in battle. You select a main and sub weapon so there can be a combination of different types.
The first thing most people will notice about the game is the beautiful watercolor cel-shaded animation style. It fits well into the Okami world - cut-scenes are narrated paintings and a major element of the game is using a magical paintbrush to affect the world by actually painting on it. This visual style influences many small aspects of the game, for example as you run you leave a train of flowers & the act of blooming trees looks great in this style.
There are only a few issues with the game. First a simlish like language is NEVER better than silence for a conversation or cut-scene. It only detracts from the experience. I don't want to hear grating noises every time I'm trying to quickly get through a dialogue. The music is quite good, but when I play the sound gets turned off.
Second, favors for retards is a common RPG theme, but this game takes it to new retarded heights. For example the fishermen in the game have no line. The went to fish with a pole and nothing else. I get the "I need medicine but so-and-so in far away village has it", but c'mon.
Other than the cel-shaded style, many aspects of the game are Zelda-esque. While some things are similar (when you are underground you leave by walking into a lit up area and get sent upwards or you can change between day or night), some other stuff is way too similar to be coincidence. For example there is a forest kid named Kokiri. There is a Legend of Zelda The Minish Cap shrink down section, opening treasure chests, bombing walls, & collecting parts of a unit of life energy to combine into a new unit of energy are all way too close.
The real question is does this game rip off Zelda or is it an homage? Personally I think that this game takes a number of Zelda like elements and combines them into a fantastic original game.
You simply need to play this game.

This is an incredible game. I bought it based on on the reviews from EGM as well as the fact the fact that I enjoyed the Viewtiful Joe games that Clover had made. Okami is wonderfully paced adventure game with graphics that will blow you away. The gameplay is intuitive and creative in ways that you have never seen before. It's amazing that Okami didn't sell well in the U.S. and I assume it was because people thought it might look too Japanese and that folklore it was based around would not be interesting. Don't let yourself be pushed away, you will not be disappointed! I have beaten Zelda: Twilight Princess on Wii and can say that I have enjoyed Okami just as much as I did Zelda. If you have a PS2 then you should have this game.
Great game, but you have to get used to it...

This game is quite a bit of fun. Prepare yourself to be confused at the beginning, and surprised by the graphic style and weird voices that they use. Once you've played the game for a couple hours you realize how long and enjoyable it is.
Awesome Game!

I don't normally write reviews at all, but i made an exception for this one. If your debating on whether to try this game or not...Stop debating and buy it! The animation is very pleasant to the eye. The storyline is realy interesting because it seems to involve alot of true Japanese mythology, not that silly anime stuff. This game doesn't realy seem to mimic any games out there right now. It has that same adventurous feel that Zelda has to it though, which definately isn't a bad thing. Well, enough from me, just give it a try you won't be disapointed!

This game is a lot of fun and pleasing to watch. The graphics are wonderful and very unique. It makes it a pleasure for those who are not playing to watch also. It is nice to see a game that is different from the others. The voices that they use might get a little annoying at times, but with everything else, you learn to ignore them. It is a definite buy if you are looking for something different visually. I recommend it highly.
Love it!

Ahh! What a gorgeous game!
I had to stop playing this game about 3/4 the way through because I got too busy to play, but I've been twitching like crazy to get back to it. It's a really authentic game, from the graphics (which rock) to the gameplay (hack-and-slash with a twist).
You could finish this game relatively quickly (30 hours-ish) or take your time, look at the scenery, and do all the little side games and puzzles and make it last for quite a long time. The voices aren't THAT annoying, I swear! Heck, its actually one of my favorite parts. It gets really funny on some characters.
Love love love this game. I recommend it to anyone looking for something new for their PS2, and for something that will keep them occupied for a decent while.
