While I am not a gamer myself, I have watched my husband play this game for more hours than I will ever admit. We/I really like the artistry and music - though it does put me to sleep late at night. It truly is something different in the world of gaming in that you are this wolf that runs around painting up the place. Yes, you control a paintbrush. Not only do you beautify the world around you, you create bombs, wind and slice villains in half with it. (no blood that I remember, only ink) I usually make my husband play games late at night when the kids are sleeping, but this one is mostly ok for them to watch. There are certain parts that he just doesn't do while they are around. We really enjoy this game.
The last great game for the PS2

This game is absolutely perfect, and truly shows that game play and innovation, not graphics, shows the true heart and soul of a game that makes it worth playing over and over again. I am near fluent in Japanese and have studied the culture extensively, so I can say that I appreciate the way that old myths such as "the bamboo cutter" and the tale of Japan's creation are re-woven into a new and exciting gaming experience.
It is similar to Legend of Zelda in that one doesn't gain "levels" so much as useful items to help meet new challenges.
I only have two issues, and only one of them is game related: The camera in the game is incredibly annoying, and while I can perfectly understand and appreciate the developer's efforts to further draw one into the experience, it would be nice to have had an option to allow me to put it the way I like it (further back from the protagonist's rear), because there are times when I think I may have almost gotten a touch of motion sickness.
The other issue is the fact that Capcom dissolved Clover, the internal studio that made such a beautiful game. It's a shame in that I would love to have seen what they could have done with other mythologies of the world, like with Norse mythology, for example--the mythology's cast of warriors would have made a great adventure game! Or even one based on the American Wild West--playing chief Sitting Bull or even as Pacos Bill would have been art so beautiful it would have brought tears to my eyes.
Capcom, if you are reading this, bring the band back together!

Okami is more than an adventure game with a cell shader overlay. Okami draws the player into a fully realized world. However, it is not without flaws. In regards to presentation, graphics are stellar. However, the dialog is rather long winded, which, coupled with the lack of voice acting, creates an irritating distraction from the animation and plotline.
The gameplay, while solid, is not without faults. Your actions within the actual game world consist of solving puzzles and exploring. The brush mechanic is implemented effectively, and is useful both in puzzles and in combat. For instance, drawing a circle in the sky will turn night into day - doing the same around a dead tree will revive it. Drawing a horizontal line across an enemy or tree with cut him or it in two, and drawing a circle with a line through it produces a bomb. The controls are also pressure sensitive. How firmly the triangle is pressed determines the thickness of the line drawn.
There are no enemies in the game world. Instead, battles are fought during certain intervals when a fiery arena forms around the players character where enemies appear. The enemies in Okami seem relatively monotonous in appearance and behavior when compared with the diversity of other non player characters throughout the rest of the game world. Each encounter plays like a mini boss battle, but theres little to no puzzle element in defeating them.
In the first 15 minutes of playing, I found myself confused. Not by the controls or by a particular puzzle, but by the plotline. The games introduction, while beautiful, refers to events that happen centuries before the actual game begins. This in itself isn't particularly unusual.
However, as each character (who only appear in the introduction and are mentioned once or twice throughout the actual game) is introduced, much time is wasted describing his or her origins and familiars. To add to the confusion, characters who appear in the introduction are identical to characters in the actual game, but are different by name only.
The lack of voiceacting adds to the confusion, as it is difficult to keep track of different names attributed to the same character model without voice recongnition AND while reading the dialog. Ultimately I found myself more confused playing Okami than I did playing Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty.
Playing Okami, I had no idea what I was supposed to do. Had I more time to digest the dialog and storyline I would have had a better understanding of the game world and the task at hand. Okami is a wonderful visual experience and showpiece for the Playstation 2, but actual game seems inaccessible from the getgo.

I love the art, I've not seen this art style in a game before. The concept of being inside a scroll somehow/ painting to accomplish tasks is awesome! The soundtrack itself is truly worth buying as well. Although some license was taken with the story of Amaterasu, Susanowo, and Orochi, it is still close enough to the original myths to keep me happy.

It really keeps ur attention and holds ur focus. Its unique and stylish gameplay makes it a worth while purchase. No other game gives the player such a interaction with the game. Using a brush to create wind, fire, sun, and water sounds horrible but is extremely fun. I highly recommend this game.

Ok well i've read all the reviews on Okami and you all say its like zelda well its not! You play as a freaking wolf not as a stupid little kid with pointy ears. Overall the game is awsome and I've almost beaten it. It's cool being able to use a brush and that stuff. So overall I love this game and its not like zelda you dorks!
A fun, and spunky, must buy.

Unlike most videogame releases, Okami has a different vibe and feel; by now, you probably know that it looks like a very stylized watercolor painting.
The gameplay is pretty straight action/adventure, although the inclusion of various player-drawn brush strokes (which have a huge variety off effects in and out of combat) add a renewed vigor to the genre.
Game length is substantial, between 30-60 hours. This is a real bargain at $40; I unconditionally recommend it.

From an 11-year-old reviewer: Okami is the best in the world. It has cool Japanese graphics. It is so fun and hard but not too hard. The ratings say it has blood and gore. IT DOES NOT. I REPEAT IT DOES NOT. But if I were you I would buy the Okami guide too. I have beaten the game and at the end you will need the Okami game guide. But yes, it is the BEST GAME IN THE WORLD!
