Deadly Alliance: The Rebirth of MK...with a few defects....

Long have I waited for a great Mortal Kombat game to hit once again. And finally the wait paid off. Not since Mortal Kombat 2 has Mortal Kombat been as much fun. But i'm sorry to say that all is not as good as it seems...I give the game 3 1/2 stars really.
First off, the fighting system is completely revamped. Finally stepping into the realm of true 3d (Mortal Kombat 4 was nothing more than a 2d fighting game with 3d models), the game play is as fast and furious as ever. With the ability to switch between 3 different fighting styles, one of which is weapon based, the combo possibilities are increased more than ever. Full 3d movement and detail make this probably the best MK since MK2...
But then there are the problems. The fighting styles, while a great new addition, aren't all they're cracked up to be. The amount of combos you can do are limited, and the stance change button does not always work when you want it to(namely in the middle of a combo when it is most useful). As with most MK games, the AI is extraordinarily cheap at times...it always seems to know exactly what you're going to do, and beats the crud out of you before you can even pull a move off.
The juggling system is awful. The AI abuses it so much that you'll find yourself walking away from the game in frustration. You can easily lose in about 10 seconds if the computer keeps you backed up against the (invisible)walls surrounding the arena, because you'll be juggled so much you'll probably never even hit the ground.
Some characters are just completely worthless, namely the new character Drahmin, who has absolutely no combo moves whatsoever. The only way to defeat an opponent is by furious button mashing and pure luck. He relies far too heavily and special moves. The same goes for returning character Cyrax. While he has a few good combos, his moves are far too limited and he must rely mostly on his special moves. And many weapon styles are far too similar...some of them are totally identical to each other, except that the actual weapons look different.
Fatality fans will be very disappointed...each character has only one fatality. While a few of these fatalities are quite good, the greater majority of them are just awful. Quan Chi's fatality in particular is by far the worst Fatality that the Mortal Kombat series has ever seen. And there are no arena-based fatalities...how the creators can even dare to have an arena called the 'Acid Bath' or the 'Lava Shrine' and not have an arena based fatality is beyond comprehension. It seems that once again, the design team opted for total laziness in the Finishing Moves department, as they have ever since MK3.
Story, which has always been one of the best parts of MK, is no let down in this game. The addition of Konquest mode, which takes you through 10 missions to help explain character story and train you in the use of that particular character is a great addition. It helps you to earn 'Kurrency' which can be used to be secrets in the 'Krypt', a room full of 676 'Koffins' that are bought using your earned 'Kurrency'. The problem there is that out of 676 Koffins, about 620 of them are total 'Krap'. Character endings also leave alot to be desired...some just make no sense whatsoever, or are too short to explain anything. Others, however, are shocking and surprising.
Overall, the game just suffers from two major things: the feeling of being incomplete, and something that all MK fans should be used to by now: Empty Promises. Some characters are just too limited and feel like they were rushed. Some character's Konquest modes also seem to be completely rushed, being devoid of story and lacking rhyme or reason. As far as empty promises, many things that the development team promised when they were creating the game just did NOT make it in: Torn clothing on characters is nowhere to be found, weapon combat is far too basic(it was said to 'Rival Soul Calibur'), and a few other things that just seem annoying when you realize they aren't there.
If it seems that i'm coming down way too hard on this game...I apologize. I have been a fan of MK since it first debuted in Arcades in 1992. I just feel that Deadly Alliance could've been so much more than it actually is. To close this review off, I will list some of the high points of the game:
The story is outstanding. I challenge anyone to find a fighting game with a story as deep as this. Even Soul Calibur's story pales in comparison. The combat is fast paced and action packed...unlike Tekken or Virtua Fighter, which is slow paced and dreadfully boring. Characters look better and more detailed than ever. Arenas, although simplistic and basic in terms of interaction and maneuverability, are highly detailed and gorgeous. The addition of Kurrency, Konquest Mode and The Krypt fuel the replay value and will keep you coming back for weeks. Tons of characters both old and new offer lots of variety.
Overall, a great game that could've been perfect, had it not been for that feeling of being incomplete, or being victim of laziness.

Mortal Kombat is back and it never looked so good. That's right, and this time you will have to increase your strenght to defeat a very deadly alliance formed by the right hand of Shao Kahn, Shang Tsung, and a more powerful and more evil Quan Chi.
Incredible real graphics, with dripping blood, clothes ripping, and with fully interactive 3-D arenas, over 20 of them. Also, you will see the return of your favorite characters (Rayden, Jax, Sonya, Scorpion, Subzero, Kitana, Quan Chi, Shang Tsung, Johnny Cage, Kung Lao, and many more) and also a whole new cast, including Blind Kenshi, Moloch, Mavado, Female Subzero, and many, many more...over 20 characters in total.
But this isn't just about graphics and characters, because it now includes a great variety in the gameplay. The biggest change is the ability to change your fighting style (Karate, Taekwondo...) in the middle of a fight, giving you bigger and better combos. Each character will have three different fighting techniques.
Also, you'll be seen completely new fatalities, brutal and bloody, just the way we like it..

As I said in the title, there is a lot of graphically gross action. However, that is not a bad thing! Games such as Virtua Fighter 4 are good for their toned-down style of fighting, but for fanatics of swords, blood, and chopping people into little pieces, this is a great game! At first, the blood was annoying until I figured out that it could be turned down, or even off. That was a relief! Fighting with swords and weapons is the best aspect of the game, along with being able to chage fighting styles in the middle of a round. The characters look good, with awesome effects added to them. Some of the characters are almost scary, such as the main sorcerer. Graphically, the game has a few minor flaws, but the engine runs smoothly and the characters, moves, and levels all look exceptional! For the ultimate in violent fighting, Mortal Kombat DA is appropriate!

I must say that the newest installment in one of the two greatest tournament fighting franchises of all time is quite a disappointment. After a five year hiatus, Mortal Kombat returns in a most discouraging fashion. Despite an intriguing, in-depth storyline, many returning favorite characters, gallons of blood and twisted gore, and enough game extras equivalent to a blockbuster DVD movie, Deadly Alliance falls short of delivering the masterpiece we had come to expect on top notch gaming systems such as the PS2 and XBox. Above all the game's most crucial flaw has got to be the highly boasted "revamped" fighter play control that is very reminiscent of Tekken and Virtual Fighter. Gone are the days where a player would block or dodge an attacking opponent and counter by kneeling and hitting a resounding uppercut that would send a warrior flying, sustaining strong damage. The intricate combo system established in MK3 has been watered down to a very limited, awkward style that causes the average player to mash buttons frantically to earn only two or three consecutive hits. And sadly, the one thing that has always kept the fans coming back for more is not likely to repeat history in this outing. Deadly Alliance has been cursed with the most uncreative, lackadaisical finishers ("fatalities") that have been seen in the series thus far which makes dealing with the frustration of figuring out ways to pound a relentless opponent far less rewarding. And to add to the despair, there are also no known stage finishers in the game. And finally, Midway has seemingly decided to stick with making the fighter characters themselves appear in an animated, comical fashion rather than digitizing real people as in the past. Ultimately, the classic MK feel just isn't there. In conclusion, in a bonus feature found on the disc entitled "History of Mortal Kombat", co-creator Ed Boon said that adding up all the time that went into making three of the previous Kombat games would equal the amount of time that went into making Deadly Alliance. Obviously, something went dead wrong.

Mortal Kombat DA was pretty good as a whole and an excellent boost from the last game (Mortal Kombat 4). The game itself is awesome. A new fighting system that gives each fighter a weapon and 2 different fighting styles. That adds a little more "personal" element to the series rather than the original format of everyone has a high kick, low kick, high punch and low punch. Now, everyone fights different. Plus there are some pretty cool things that you can do with the weapons.
There are some returning characters in this one, Shang Tsung, Quan Chi, Sonya Blade, Johnny Cage, Sub Zero, Kano. Kung Lao and of course, Scorpian. And of course, where is Mortal Kombat without new characters and hidden characters?! There are 9 hidden characters that you must unlock and 3 new selectable characters to start with. EXCELLENT!
I could only think of 2 down sides to this game. Shang Tsung has been made a lot less cheap than usual and CANNOT MORPH into anyone anymore. Some of the Fatalities are really good and some of the others are really dumb. Example, newcomer Bo Rai Cho. Trust me, when you see it you'll in comparison of new Fatalities from Kano, Cage and Scorpian.
I gotta give this one a big thumbs up because no longer is this game truly impossible if you can't do the combo system. It's nice to know the combos (which might I add are little easier to perform as well), but you can't fight it out as well. Slightly like Tekken's style of combat but I still have to say that Mortal Kombat is still it's own game. The 3 fighting styles per fighter usually doesn't make a difference in the fight itself. It's just cool to do basically.
And my last final note on why I enjoyed this game. Shao Khan is dead! Personally, I was getting sick of his character. The other really great thing is that LIU KANG is dead also!! For me, that's a personal bonus to play because now I no longer have to deal with people who don't know how to play (ie use the combos) but can do Liu's cheap moves over and over and over again!
Either way it goes, Mortal Kombat DA is a quality game and definitely worth picking up. Check it out you might be impressed with the new facelift that is Mortal Kombat.

If you took away all the previous versions of MK, this would be a very good game on its own. It is one of the best fighting games for PS2 thus far and is expansive as far as characters and moves go. However, MK does have a history. I started playing the original in the arcades upon release. What I hoped an prayed for was that the PS2 version of MK would have a playable MK1 in it, to my sadness, it doesn't (maybe it exists, I have not seen any cheats allowing an unlock). The new 3d characters look just like any other PS2 fighting character. I miss the digitized characters who weren't as 3d but somehow looked more realistic. Also, why only one fatality per character? Serious flaw. Where are the babalities? Serious flaw. Most of the original special moves are there but not all, why couldn't they include them in this (Johnny Cage's ball punch for example). The fighting style system is neat and an innovation, however, after playing for a while you will see that it does not add that much to the game. Also, the illustrations and the announcers voice just didn't speak "Mortal Kombat" to me. The character design is different and the announcer no longer sounds like a B movie kung fu voice but like a typical video game voice. Another new element is the Krypt where you can unlock "Kontent" with the money you collect from beating other fighters. Most of the Kontent are pictures of the "design team" or character sketches which is pretty lame and a waste of time in my book. The game makes a big deal about MK history, etc...but they could have really incorporated a lot more of the original elements into this game that made the original so groundbreaking. Perhaps I am biased, I was a huge MK1 fan who quit playing the series after that and just recently got this version. Bottom line, need more fatalities, more original characters and original moves, more interactive environments, and more cool features (that are actually worthwhile) to make this game a truely great buy for an MK fan. Otherwise, it is just a decent fighting game--no where near as good as Soul Caliber on the inferior Dreamcast.
I Love MK!!!

I am a veteran of the original Mortal Kombat for SNES, and didn't play any of the other games until this one came out. The great thing is, they didn't change it too much and the graphics are awesome. I don't like how Liu Kang is dead, but there are still a lot of good characters. You can now use weapons, which appropriately increase your offense but decrease your defense. Some characters can use their weapons to impale their opponent, which is irreversible and makes the other character's health decline slowly until the end of the match. Besides the weapons there are two other martial arts styles per character. This is useful for combos and enemies you would normally be weak against. The fatalities are AWESOME!!! They even added a humorous character who vomits as a special move and farts to regain health. Here's a list of playable characters:
-Sonya Blade
-Nitara
-Cyrax
-Sub-Zero
-Bo Rai Cho
-Scorpion
-Li Mei
-Frost
-Mavado (awesome new character!)
-Jax Briggs
-Kung Lao
-Shang Tsung
-Kenshi
-Kano
-Johnny Cage
-Quan Chi
-Drahmin
-Hsu Hao
-Kitana
-Rayden
-Reptile
-Blaze
-Mokap
If you love fighting and brutality, you HAVE to get this game!!!

No I am not a reviewer who knows almost nothing about this game. I have read about this, seen many screenshot, and looked into it. Lets start with some MK history. The original MK was a hit and anybody who was anybody owned it. Then MK2 was released about a couple years later. It also was a hit. Then Midway lost their reputation of makin an awesome fighting games when MK3 was released. Then other MKs (Ultimate 3, trilogy, 4 and gold) also [were bad]. Midway has finally found out what they have been doing wrong.
Midway knew they finally needed to think up new ideas for there fighting games instead of using ones that were already thought up by street fighter, virtua fighter and other fighting games.
Ok just like the other MKs there are a good amount of characters to choose, 20 in this one with new characters and old favs like sonja, jax, scorpion, and subzero. They have changed the looks of many of there characters. The 4 main things about this game that tops all others is:
1. Each character has 3 different fighting styles which u can switch during battle
2. More manueverability
3. Incredible graphics that top tekken tag, street fighter ex3, and even virtua fighter 4
4. Midway is going to make a quest mode or something like tekken force mode
By what i have read about this game and all the screenshots i have seen I will say this game is going to be not just awesome but the greatest fighting game of all time.
I hope this review was helpful.

Deadly Alliance is the best Mortal Kombat to date. It has just about everything that an MK fan should want. All veterans of the game will be impressed as well as beginners. However, just like every other game, it has a few flaws to go with it. Below are some of the pros and cons of Deadly Alliance.
PROS:
- All new 3D environment for excellent gameplay
- Authentic Martial Arts far better than any other Mortal Kombat
- New characters (Kenshi, Mavado, Hsu Hao, Nitara, Frost)
- Enhanced storyline
- Konquest mode (allows you to train and become the best fighter)
- New Arenas
- Originators of Mortal Kombat (Raiden, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Kung Lao, Sonya, Kano)
- MK History (video)
- The Krypt (allows you to purchase hidden characters, arenas, team photos, koncept art, and alternate costumes)
Cons:
- No stage fatalities, brutalities, or animalities (that's what made Mortal Kombat popular in the first place)
- No Liu Kang (How do you have a Mortal Kombat without one of its originators and champion?)
Overall, it's a superb game that will keep you playing for a long time. It is highly recommended for any fan of fighting games and is a 'must play' for all MK fans.
MK is back and as brutal as ever!

Mortal Kombat has returned. After some disappointments, midway finally took the concept back to the ground and rebuilt it. The new fighting system is great. Every character has three fighting styles (one of those includes a weapon). Old characters return such as: Scorpion, Sub Zero, Sonya, Jax. New character emerge like: Frost, Malvado, Nitara. Even the fighting arenas have been revamped. Most of the arenas have interactive environments. Knock your opponent into a pilar and watch it crack and crumble. Even watch your opponent start to sweat, bleed, get his or her clothing ripped and most important of all die from the new and improved fatalities. For those of you who thought Mortal Kombat was dead think again. Deadly Alliance will resurrect the MK craze.
