If you're reading this review, you most likely have bought or at least rented KH2's predacessor, Kingdom Hearts. Square Enix took a risk by merging arguably it's best series, Final Fantasy, with Disney. It was doomed to fail, obviously, as many gamers are not interested in playing with Disney characters. Yet, Kingdom Hearts was extremely sucsessful, and I, plus many, loved it.
Kingdom Hearts 2 is the immensely popular sequel to Kingdom Hearts, and it picks up only one year after the events of the first game.
Players watch the intro sequence to expect to begin playing as the main character Sora, but instead are given control of another character: Roxas.
Playing as Roxas is basically a three hour tutorial, basically showing off all the new features of the game, and quickly getting you up to speed.
This tutorial forces to to play minigames which are...sort of fun, I guess. Some of them, like skateboarding and seeing how long you can keep a ball in the air, are actually fun and somewhat addictive. Most others are uneeded to be honest. Like other reviewers have mentioned, this is useless filler.
But, soon after the minigames, it picks up almost immediately with alot of mystery about the story.
So, after playing through all of this, you quickly regain control of the character we all know and love: Sora. Once again, Sora is quickly reuinted with his former companions Goofy Goof and Donald Duck, and they all agree to go on another adventure to find Riku, Kairi, and King Mickey.
This adventure spans across several new and old worlds, including Port Royale, The Coliseum, and Disney Castle, just to name a few. My favorite new world would have to be Port Royale, because nothing can compare to fighting along Captain Jack Sparrow or Will Turner. And the graphics for this level are fantastic.
As I have just mentioned, the entire game has been enhanced graphically, starting with the simple yet complex level designs, the lighting, and every single character design. And during all the hectic fighting sequences, the framerate never drops and everything is nice and shiny.
The graphics aren't the only thing receiving an overhaul this year as well. The gameplay has received many fantastic upgrades. For one, there are several keyblades this time around. In the last KH, there were somewhere around 15 I beleive. This one has at least 20, and all are different and fun to use. And as a new feature, they have a Reaction Command, which is implemented by hitting the triangle button and it activates some sort of combo attack or something like that. Very fun feature.
And another new feature is the ability to merge with your fellow friends, which 3 out of 4 allows you to dual wield keyblades of your choosing! And the other form, Wisdom Form, is a form based completely around magic, which is great.
The music...WOW is pretty much all I can say. The first KH had some fantastic pieces, and the second one excels even further then the first, with new pieces and revamped old pieces of music. Every bit of music feels epic, and really sells the point of the entire game.
I don't want to go on much more, but I have to mention the storyline. Kingdom Hearts had a story like no other, and I loved it. Kingdom Hearts 2 expands on the story, and is my favorite plot in every game I have ever played. There are several twists throughout and it keeps you interested without ever letting you go. It sets up incredibly memorable characters, and I won't comment on the fate of any of them, but regardless whether they live or die, they all left an imprint in my mind. I care for each and every one.
In closing, Kingdom Hearts 2 is by far my favorite game, and I am a huge gamer, beleive me. It's epic gameplay, music, and story make this game truely fantastic. Highly reccomended, and if this game isn't in your PS2 library, you have committed a federal crime.

Well to start out I would give the first game five stars but this game only gets four because it just dosn't have the magic of the first. The first game was challenging and had a fantastic ending that made me want more...four years later and I have played through KH2 and I sorta felt cheated.
The Good:
-New trigger commands, more than pushing the x button.
-Improved gummi ship, fast paced and full of action.
-AWESOME GRAPHICS!
-You can go into the Underworld in Olympis Coliseum.
-Goofy seems more helpful than last time.
-The new theme song may be better than the first, very cool.
-The character designs are amazing.
-The Final fantasy Characters do more in this one.(Squall/Leon, Aeris, Yuffie, Cid, Seifer, Rahjin, Fuhjin, ViVi, Yuna, Rikku, Payne, Selphie, Cloud, Tifa, Sephiroth).
-Sora can weild TWO KEYBLADES!!!!!
-You can skip the movie sequences, that have already been seen like if you die on a boss.
-Atlantica (which was hated by many) is much better but sorta cheesy.
-You get to play as Riku for a short time.
The Bad:
-The battles are way to easy, I only died on two bosses.
-Some of the voice acting isn't as good as in the first
-The main characters in Twilight Town are BORING!
-The characters in Organization 13 just sorta pop up and many don't have much of a personality.
-The Ending just wasn't as touching.
-People wanted Kairi to have a keyblade, they did give her one, but she didn't kick much butt.
-The gameplay is linear in that you cant free roam a world untill you finish the story in it.
-The worlds are mostly just rehash of the movies, they even rip dialogue straight from the movies.
Minor Flaws in an Otherwise Great Game

I'd been anticipating the sequel to Kingdom Hearts for several years, and when I first got the game, I was incredibly let down. The game takes what feels like forever to get going, and if you haven't played Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories (which I haven't), the plot is confusing at first.
However, after about a half an hour (mostly of cut scenes and boring tutorials), the game picks up immensely. The menus are similar enough to Kingdom Hearts I that seasoned players will feel instantly familiar with the game, but enough changes have been made to keep it fresh and exciting. (Also, the menus have a more streamlined, intuitive feel.)
There are new additions to old favorites -- new worlds, characters, summons, and spells -- as well as entirely new features such as forms (allowing Sora to temporarily meld with another party member).
Personally, I found the most annoying part of the entire game to be the drastic make-over of Atlantica. It was changed from a combat area to a mini-game area, and the mini-games are annoying.
Despite the slow start and poorly done revamp of Atlantica, Kingdom Hearts II is, without a doubt, my favorite video game of 2006. It was worth the wait.
Your weekend will fly by with this game

My only problem with this game is the reaction command, it's a love/hate sort of thing, because the reaction commands can be really helpful but often times they flash for an instant and i miss most of the time, my thumb is just not that fast. When i need some help the reaction command almost never shows up and when i'm busy with combos that's when it appears and i miss it. In fact it's because i keep missing the reaction command during the Sephiroth battle that i keep losing -_-'. On the other hand i really love the "dual stance" R-command with the samurai nobody, but at the same time i hate the "Begin Game" R-command you get with the Gambler nobody (i always get turned into a friggin' die/card). Often times you don't have to utilize the reaction commands but when you get to the final battle the 2nd or 3rd xemnas battle you have to use it to break through a trully annoying barrier, and it's really hard to get this command (at least it is for me).
Another minor annoyance would be Jimminy's journal, some of the mini-games are fun but i don't like all of them and i'm kind of miffed that i have to play all of them (and get a high score) just to fill out his journal and get a complete ending to the game. I'm not looking foreward to fighting the "fantasy 4" in the final paradox tournament.
Also i don't know why some people say this game's too easy when on normal mode i've had some pretty hard battles (although the final 3 bosses before xemnas were rather wimpy but really fun:). But it's true that the game does move pretty fast and unless you break for some training or the mini-games you'll get to the final battle really fast.
The camera is wonderful now, though at first i was annoyed that it was the 5th thing for my thumb to do i got used to it quickly. Basic battles against heartless and nobodies are easy because Donald and Goofy are better and because this time around there really aren't that many to ambush you (except once you get to The World That Never Was).
The Gummi ship missions are loads of fun, and the new worlds are great too (but the pirates are annoying since you can only hurt them in moonlight and you're a sitting duck half the time). If you played the first Kingdom Hearts then you'll probably remember how dark Holloween Town was, i had a hard time playing in that world (most of the time i didn't know heartless were attacking), but now it's much better, i'm no longer squinting my eyes the whole time (same goes for Port Royal since it's at night the whole time). As much as i like the new worlds (sora is so adorable as a lion cub in the Pride Lands) i find myself missing Traverse Town, Deep Jungle, and Wonderland, but it wouldn't have made sense to go back there. In almost every world you go to there's a reunion which does make sense since in the first KH all you did was rescue the 7 princessess but they never got to go back to their own worlds and now you see them home, safe, and happy (Bell, Jasmine).
The Olympus Colosseum gets thrashed but you can still enter tournaments, in the underworld o_o. The Underdrome and Paradox tournaments can be loads of fun and pretty easy for most of them but the only negative side to them is that you no longer gain experience which i think sucks because it would be the perfect place to train. Hercules isn't invulnerable 90% of the time and the arena is much wider now so you can run far and fast. You can use Drive Forms without Donald or Gooffy and Summons also, unlike before. My favorite bosses to fight are Cerberus and Hades, Cerberus spins around alot but it has a great reaction command (that's not too fast for me) which completely knocks him out for a few good seconds, while Hades tends to teleport alot but never too far and his attacks aren't that devastating (remember in KH1 when he spun in the center and completely washed you over with fire? he don't do that no more and even if he did sora's better equipped).
Sora's new Drive Forms are easy to work with, basically Donal or Gooffy or both vanish and Sora gets more strength or higher magic or both which helps with boss fights, the only catch is that it only lasts for as long as his drive points, which in the begining he has 3 and eventually reaches 5 and more (depends if you beat sephiroth), and these drive points drain in seconds each so with 6 or 7 drive points you probably get half a minute for either form but that's more than enough for valor or master form to take on a boss. This is a great new feature(the Anti-Sora form which is always a surprise is fun too).
Lastly Atlantica is so much fun, it's the most relaxing place to go for a break, you don't do any fighting but they are singing mini-games, same goes for Hundred Acre Wood, cute as ever pooh bear (i love the baloon bounce soo much). I should mention that you don't really need the strategy guide for this game because it only states the obvious, all you need to know is in jimminy's journal, he'll tell you all you need to do and where you need to go next.

I loved the first game and the one for the GBA that took place in between the two. This one came as a surprise when I bought it.
1) The proluge was way to long. It needs to be made shorter in KH3. You have no idea how happy I was to finally get to Sora.
2) Too many cut scenes. I admit that the story was awesome but there was barely any playing. It is a great game if you're that kind of person that likes to take a break on a hike every single minute which I am not.
3) Way to short. This one wasn't as challenging as the first one. On the first one you can get lost in Hollow Bastion real easy. But now I'm sad to say that it is way to easy to travel. Well I'm not really saying it was that bad that it was easy to navigate Hallow Bastion but they could have at least added a few more halls to the maze that's inside.
Now for the good things about the game.
1) Reaction cammands really made this game easier than the first. There is also a lot of action on this one.
2) I love the story! I'm that kind of person who likes romance, action, drama, and mystery games. If you are like that then you will immidietly fall in love with it.
3) Come on this is probably the best reason to love this game. Captain Jack Sparrow. Who didn't like Pirates of the Carribean.
4) This is a good thing for all the little kids out there. It's a bad thing for us 11 year olds who don't like Winnie the Pooh. Over fifty Disney characters come into 3-D. Except Pirates of course which looked better on DVD instead of PS2.
5) For the teenagers who like the Final Fantasy series you'll be happy to know that characters from FF6, FF7, FF8, FF9, FF10, and FF10-2 will be on this game too.
Now I think this is a great game for the young, teen, and adult to play. Especially the adults because they will be happy to see that some of their favorite characters have not been forgotten.
Believe the hype...

I was a big fan of the first Kingdom Hearts, it was truly a unique game. Melding the worlds of Final Fantasy with Disney was a very interesting idea, and its one that worked. Kingdom Hearts II continues with the same basic formula, so if you liked the original, you will most definetly dig this one. Everything that the oringinal did well, II improves on. The combat system is a vast improvement over the original, and it remains fun over the 30+ hours. In fact, I wish there was more to experience. Its that fun.
If your a disney fan, you will dig being able to fight along different disney characters and explore those worlds. All are very well done and diverse, some in particular are just breathtaking. The Pirates of the Carribean world comes to mind, and its just awesome. You actually feel like your apart of that world as you fight along with Captain Jack Sparrow. The voice acting and animations add too the immersive nature. Its amazing how well they get Johnny Depp's character, you would think it his him in the game, when he actually had nothing to do with the production. The square characters get some great treament in the game as well, as you run into many of them. You'll even fight along side some of them and thats a treat as well. If your a Final Fantasy fan, you will absolutly eat up the more FF inspired moments in the game, and it more than makes it a worthwhile experience if your not into disney.
The real draw for me is the story. One of the best and most moving stories I've ever had the pleasure of playing. Its very interesting actually. Surprisingly, you start the game not playing Sora. You play as Roxxas for the first 5 or so hours. It serves as a introduction world, but Roxxas is a key character to the story, and you will have a blast playing as him. Another thing I liked is that the story wraps up quite well, you are not left hanging. It has a satisfying conclusion, and is much better than the first games ending.
Square Enix once again shows why they are one of the best in the business. Kingdom Hearts II is a very polished product, from the art style, character designs, the music, on down to the extremely well done FMV's. Its not without flaws, it was a tad short for me, I finished it under 35 hours, and it was supposed to be much longer. But regardless, its a incredible journey and well worth devoting the time to play.
Square Enix-- I LOVE YOU!!!

Once upon a time, in 2001 to be exact, a company named Square Soft, soon to be Square Enix, created a gem called Kingdom Hearts for the Playstation 2. Was it good? Yes, it was good. It was sensational.
Then, around 03, fans heard the memorable theme music from KH, resonating from their TVs. Yes, it was sequel time. Enter Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories. (by the way, i also wrote a review on that. Just look for it on Amazon) This time the game was for the GameBoy Advance. Yes, it was very good.
But now, the main event: KINGDOM HEARTS 2!!! Recieved with screams and cheers, Kingdom Hearts 2 revolutionized its earlier battle systems and incorporated several new features.
So, as soon as you rev up the little PS2 disc, you'll see the most beautiful graphics since who-knows-when.
Now, the story is as ingrossing as ever. Organization 13 (First appearance: Kingdom Hearts: CHain of Memories) is attempting to regain their hearts. You start out playing as Roxas (Sora's Nobody) and then move on to Sora. You work with Donald, Goofy, and once or twice with King Mickey. Most of the old worlds are there, and several new ones (Pirates of the Caribbean, Tron, Land of Dragons or Mulan's world, and Beast's Castle.)
The gameplay is unmatched. It incorporates interactive cutscenes and Limits (ala Final Fantasy). It also has the old hack and slash, as well as summons and magic. There are over 40 boss battles, as well as tournaments at the Coliseum. At one of the best moments in the game, you battle 1000 Heartless. Yes, I swear! And there's also a secret boss... cough-Sephiroth-cough.
The voice-acting is as wonderful as ever. The managed to acquire most of the voice-actors (the ones that aren't dead). The music is great. Though Square Enix dropped Simple and Clean (The theme music to the first and second game) they composed another theme song, My Sanctuary. Wonderful.
Now for the bad things. Oops, I forgot--There aren't any bad things!!!
All in all, you will never find a better game. Seriously, unless the come out with a Kingdom Hearts 3. Rent or buy? BUYBUYBUYBUYBUYBUYBUYBUYBUYBUYBUYBUYBUYBUYBUYBUY!!! Of course, it is essential to have at least played Kingdom Hearts, Memories if at all possible. So there you have it-- BUYBUYBUYBUY!!!

Anyone who has ever played the original would know that the whole point of kingdom hearts is to beat the stuffing out of the heartless with nifty weapons known as keyblades, Well, this time around you get to beat the stuffing out of heartless and a new brand of villan known as nobody's. With a compelling story line and great voice acting, donald and goofy act and sound just like their dsney versions, kingdom hearts 2 delivers in every aspect of gameplay except for one, the summons. I love this game, don't get me wrong, but i felt that they really could have added a couple of more summons into the mix to make the battle system that much more fun, the original had roughly 7 summons all together and this one has only 4. Square, how about adding a couple of final fantasy summons, into the gameplay? *cough, cough* BEHEMUT! Either way this is a great game, one that any final fantasy or disney fan should pick up.
WOW what a game

The first game was awesome and broke many of the normal gaming rules. However the second goes above and beyond what I expected. The graphics are intensely realistic, the characters are amazing, and the overall play value of the game is wonderful. I could play these games over and over again and never get bored. I hope that they continue this series, because it is well worth its money!!
