I could make a joke about how overtly Japanese this game is, but instead, I'll just go straight to the Pros and Cons.
Pros:
Pricetag. $20 is a great price for a game as good as this one
Gameplay. It's relatively easy to understand how the game is played, and it's enjoyable right as you get going.
Music. It's very eclectic, but I enjoy it. Most people I've talked to enjoy the music.
Cons:
Graphics. If you're a graphics nut, this game will drive you insane. They're like a PS1 game, but with a higher framerate.
Difficulty. The game gets hard FAST, and at times, it seems like there's nothing for you to do except try and try again, hoping that something will make itself apparent.
Multiplayer. The multiplayer mode in this game is, admittedly, very lame. Whenever I play with friends, we just take turns playing a regular level.
Setting. Seems like the same thing over and over again, and if you get stuck on a certain level, you will never want to play it again.
Though it seems like the cons outweigh the pros, they definitely do not. In conclusion, it's $20. It's obscure. It's fun. Why not?
How can a game be this great without being fun? It makes no sense!

Part of me wants to call Katamari Damacy the greatest game of all time. Another part of me doesn't like it because it's not all that fun to play. As a matter of fact, it's no more fun to play than it is to watch. The full sensation of the goodness of the game comes from gaping in awe at how somebody could possibly make a game so bizzare. Rolling everything up into a ball is just such an interesting idea that there is no possible way not to love it unless you're just a stuffy person with no love for creativity. On the other hand, the game provides no challenge and the game is monotonous, offering no gameplay variety. Just picking up larger objects as the game progresses. Although I did find myself highly amused by some of the object descriptions. Potty: For some strange reason people not of Japanese descent seem to have some trouble with this. I have no idea how that made it through the localization process, but it's the funniest thing I've seen in a video game since Earthbound.
Rated "E" for Everyone?

Usually when a game is rated "E" for Everyone... Everyone can play it. This game should be rated "K" for kids. When some Cosmos King destroys all the stars in the sky it's your job to go to earth and roll together objects of everysize into your katamari balls and toss them into space to recreate the stars that were once there.
I think I lost 100 IQ just playing the first level....
This game is fun as h*ll.

I have never played a game ANYTHING like this. On originality alone I would give it five stars. It's the simplest idea anyone could have thought up (pushing around a giant ball of stuff as stuff sticks to it, the bigger the ball, the bigger stuff able to be picked up, etc.), but the idea is executed so well, it is absolutely addicting. I only have minor complaints about the game. The first one is that the game should have more stages, it could be taken so much further (rolling up planets, etc.). The second one is that when the katamari gets stuck in a tight place it is sometimes very difficult to even move, let alone get out. Other than these MINOR shortcomings, this is a great game that I would recommend to anyone with a pulse!

Both I (a video game novice) and my [...] (video game expert) son love this game. It's fun, challenging and even somewhat educational, giving one a window into another culture's everyday products.

This game is more fun that you'd think from the description. It has great replay value because it is a great stress reducer to roll around the world picking up cars and buildings. Ha, take THAT, World!
Weirdly addictive, disappointingly short

I played this game with some friends out-of-town, and seriously had to acquire a PS2 just to satisfy my craving. Not a shooter game, not an rpg, you just roll. Seriously. It's surprisingly awesome actually - but my big disappointment came when after about 2 days of mildly committed playing, it was done. I'd beat it, and I'm really not a big gamer. And I don't know how much mileage I'm really gonna get out of the sort of limited 2-player mode. Maybe the sequel is better - I hope?
Finally, a relaxing video game. Good for stopping anxiety too.

I have to agree with "A Kid's review" when he said "If you're depressed, bipolar, or a person, you'll LOVE THIS GAME!!!"
Based on that review, I purchased a copy and was in complete and total agreement. As someone who is all of the above three, I have to admit that the Kid was right on the money. The game is so easy to play that you really don't need to pick up the instruction book. Just grab the controller and start rolling. The music is really fun, the colors are soft, and there is nothing stressful about the game. Rolling the ball and collecting things can really become something to look forward to when you get home from a rough day at the office. It is simple, yet challenging. Rated E for everyone, and not childish. I am a longtime player of games like God of War, Devil May Cry, Resident Evil, and Silent Hill. While I still love those games and will always go enjoy playing them it felt good to give my mind a rest from horror and violence. To sum it up, this game is like going to the amusement park for the first time as a kid. Bright, colorful, fun, exciting, and you don't want to leave.
Great Buy

This game was awesome in an off the wall, phsycadelic sort of way. It may sound like an odd buy if you read the reviews but its one of those games that is just fun for the sake of being fun. The idea of rolling a ball around and sticking stuff to it sounds lame but you have no idea how fun it is until you try it. I would recommend this to anyone who has an open mind and wants to have a blast...The music is great!!!It's still stuck in my head from a week ago...
BUY THIS GAME!!!
Hints for getting to Level 10, where you can pick up EVERYTHING

I have been playing this game since Christmas, and I must say it is fun! There is no shoot-'em-up or fights or car chases--it's just rolling a "sticky ball" along and picking up pieces in the landscape, and your ball--that's the "katamari"--becomes bigger and bigger so you can also pick up bigger and bigger things. The screen shifts every time you hit a particular level, so that your perspective is "higher"-you can see more of the landscape.
I was able to reach level 10, the top level. The strategy is always to find which part of the landscape has the bigger pieces. As you get to the higher levels, you'll find areas that are cordoned off and you cannot enter unless your katamari has reached a certain size (the entrances will tell you the minimum size required). The strategy is to enter that area as soon as you reach the required level, because that area will have the bigger things that will allow you to get bigger more quickly. Remember, there is a timer going.
At level 10, it gets really interesting! (You should also remember you will need 25 minutes per game.) At 3 meters, you should get to the upper part of the landscape by either going up the ramp to the schoolyard and going through the break in the brick wall, or just roll up the wall opposite from the ramp. At 12 meters, break out via an exit that opens up at the schoolyard and head into the harbor . Pick up the inner ring of trawlers in the harbor (the outer ring's trawlers are still too big), go up the concrete wall and back into the sea again. Go around and find a u-shaped pier with containers. Pick those up, and then go up the hill with the circular train set and pick those up and the trees. Once you get to 20 meters, go up a little hill and collect all the trees there and the two silos, then come down, go across the water, and start going though the city that overlooks the trawlers. Just rolling around that area a bit will get you to 60 meters, at which time you should strike out for the surrounding islands. There is a causeway that says "60 meters" so go in that direction and start picking up the buildings at the end of the causeway. As you get bigger and bigger, remember you can come back to where the game started. All those buildings that were barriers before you can now pick up!
As you get even bigger, you start picking up islands--small ones first and then bigger ones! I reached 800+ meters, and that meant I picked up almost everything in sight except for small islands and clouds that I couldn't get to in time.
I found that the next time I played, I had a choice of playing "eternal"--no time limit! So I picked up EVERYTHING! The count was about 15,000 objects.
