The best game out right now...

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 6 / 7
Date: October 31, 2002
Author: Amazon User

This game is amazing. It is easily the best game to come out in a long time, if not for the entire modern console gaming industry, then at least for the PS2.

The game basically takes GTA3 and adds a ton of new things, like:

A lot more vehicles (including motorcycles, golf carts, planes, helicopters, dune buggys, and really fast cars).

Tons and tons of weapons. The melee weapons alone are incrediable (the screams of people as you chainsaw them to death, or the absolute comedy of beating an old man with a four iron).

New AI and graphic improvements. Sure the graphics still aren't top notch for the PS2, but the improvements make it absolutely beautiful to look at. The new AI is also great; the police are actually tough to escape from.

The soundtrack. The soundtrack (radio stations) are so well put together that it just makes Vice City even more fun to play. There is nothing like jacking someone's car and driving away from the police to Michael Jackson.

All in all, this game is absolutely amazing. There is just so much more things to do in this game then all the previous GTA games, someone could easily put in 100 hours of play time to hit the 100% completion mark, and still have fun playing it.
If I had to sum up this game in a sentence, I would probably say something like "Rallying golf carts to Slayer while running over people and beating rich old men with golf clubs."

ATTENTION PARENTS: Stop complaining about how violent this game is, and how there is nothing good in this game for kids. And guess what? It's your own damn fault that you let your kids get this game. YOUR FAULT. Don'd critisize the game, even though you never played it. It has an MA rating on it, and on the back it says Violence, Blood and Gore, Strong Sexual Content, and Strong Language. It's your own damn fault that you got your kid this game, not the game's fault.

With that said, the game is very great. There is so much to do. The violence is just the frosting on the cake. The atmosphere, the cars, and the MUSIC!!! Just buy this game, you'll be playing it for about 3 months every day.

Graphics: 8, great but need a lot more polishing.

Sound: 10, the music is so good. 104 songs all from the 80's. Gunshots sound beautiful. Ray Liotta is the voice of Tommy Vercetti.

Control: 8, near perfect, but the targeting is still tricky.

Gameplay: 10, amazing, just plain amazing.

Replay Value: 10, you'll be playing this forever.

I am one of the few gamers who actually HAS seen screenshots, (30 screenshots to be exact)and has seen 12 different streaming videos of GTA Vice City, so I am one of the few gamers in here that has a RIGHT to say that it will be good. You CAN CAN CAN CAN ride motorcycles and helicopters; I have video of that. Just because you weren't able to do it in a demo doesn't mean it won't be there; demos are not the whole game and I say this on behalf of anyone who knows ANYTHING about anything. The framerate IS NOT SLOW; for the millionth time. It is actually about double the rate of GTA3. And an anonymous reviewer was upset because when you kill people, they don't write the name of the murderer in their own blood on the street, and you can't visit a, "sexy shrink." How would any of this profit? Who needs it? Just about everything that upset that gamer were things NEVER even considered be put into a video game because they were such STUPID ideas. GTA: Vice City will rule; no matter what CONSOLE it is on. Something else people are complaining about is also beginning to annoy me. The quality of the game is what matters; not what it's on. Just because you hate PS2 is absolutely no reason to give this game a low rating; console prejiduce will not get you anywhere. There is also a lot, lot more to GTA 3 than running around and murdering people. You can do hundreds of different missions for various people, which I find totally exciting. The more missions you do, the closer you'll be to earning the next island and possibly new cars and effective wanted levels .(eg. You can only get the army after you once you've done the army mission on Shoreside Vale.) So don't complain if you can't get something yet. As I mentioned before; the game is not all about violence; as a matter of fact, if you wish to, you can work for the cops, the hospital, be a fireman, etc. What you choose to do is what makes the game violent or non-violent. What the GTA series is going for is NOT violence; it is sheer freedom to go anywhere you want to and do anything you wish. And it is no more violent than tons of games out on the market today. There's blood; so what? Lots of games have had blood; I don't see what is so controversial if every game is just as, if not more violent, than this one. ...

First off, let me start by saying this game is phenominal. How you play it is entirely up to you. There are few boundries and it truly shows the strides console games have made. As for all you bible thumping soccer moms B*tching and moaning about how this game is so horrible and it's warping the precious minds of today's youth, here's a tip. THIS GAME ISN'T FOR YOUR DARLING LITTLE KIDDIES, IT'S FOR THE REST OF US OLD ENOUGH TO UNDERSTAND IT'S A GAME AND ENJOY IT FOR WHAT IT IS. Honestly, I'm starting to get sick and tired of all you lazy ass parents. I guess it's much easier to whine about something your kid shouldn't have then do some ACTUAL PARENTING and not allow them to have it. Idiots. Get over it, games like this exist. All of us young and old adults arn't playing this game and going on killing sprees. All your incessant complaining isn't going to stop games like this from being made. So deal with it, do your job, sit around and watch Barney with your kids like you're supossed to and leave the rest of us to have fun.

Motorcycles and Cars Confirmed

With much speculation as to wether or not this game will be good or the vehicles that will be included most reviews on this site are very uninformed. It has been confirmed with the release of a new gamining magazine that Motorcycles will be included. While on the Motorcycle the character can have a woman with him on the back and very gracefully rides the bike, while in turns the character sticks out his leg for balance and backs the bike up by walking it back. (Very Realistic)Also, the number of vehicles will not be a let down. GTA III only had about 50 cars Vice City will included approx. 120. This will included favorites from the 80's like Ferrari's and Lamborghini's. The sports cars are not the only thing to see there are a number of improvements to classic GTA III cars like the Semi-truck. Also the reflective surfaces of the cars are a wonderful site. Another added feature is very unlike GTA III, that being that players will be able to explore all of Vice City at the begining of the game. In addition to being able to explore the whole city from the start there are more possiblities to explore inside of buildings. The buildings will not just be blocks in the road, but rather another place for the story to build. This will be an instant hit and classic

A Major Upgrade over GTA3

Well, Rockstar Games has done it yet again. After the sleeper hit GTA3, many people thought it was going to be impossible to beat. The non-linear gameplay, high-quality graphics, and seemingly unending violence made the game a major draw for teenagers--and a major pain for parents and watchdog-groups. But now, the Grand Theft Auto series has a new flagship: Vice City. Set in the 1980's in a seaside town south of Liberty, GTA:VC is the story of Tommy Vercetti (the player's character actually has a personality in this one!), a recently released Mafia man. Sent to Vice City by Sonny Forelli to do a drug deal, he soon finds himself trying to track down the money, and have some fun along the way. A host of new weapons (32 to be exact) is only overshadowed by the fact that you can only carry 9 at a time. One of the first missions requires you to whack someone with a Chainsaw. Other weapons include a meat cleaver, teargas, golf clubs, and a screwdriver, just to name a few. 100 vehicles give you a nice choice of transportation across the vast city. GTA3 fans will be pleased to see several motorcycles, helicopters, and airplanes, all of which are pilot-able. After playing the game for a week now, I've decided there's nothing better than cruising around Vice City on a motorcycle. But watch out for the helicopter controls, they're slightly confusing. After a little while of flying, you get the hang of it. (Note to Rockstar Games: Simplify 'copter controls for the next game.) Overall, the game is a credit to Rockstar, and a blast for anyone who buys it. You'll find yourself just cruisin' Vice City, looking for some action, for hours of real time. Some things to watch out for: When you first start the game, the graphics may hurt your eyes, because everything looks like it's in slow motion. To prevent this, go into the Options menu, and turn off "Trails". I don't know why they put this feature in, but it can really be a turn-off. Go to Leaf Links Golf Course after dark, but before 00:00, and look at the buildings across the street on the horizon for an interesting surprise (Check the lights on the middle building). After dying or getting busted while on a mission, look around for a cab with a pink arrow over it. It'll take you back to the place where you get the mission. And most of all, have fun exploring Vice City.

Best game ever!!

Like many have said, this game takes all that was good in GTA3 and makes it better. Unfortunately, there are still a handful of problems that plague the game.

1. Loading times. While it's not a big deal early in the game, most missions require you to go from island to island. This, of course, means more times that the player must wait for the new islands to load. It can get annoying quickly.

2. Lull in the action. About half-way through the game there's a rather noticible lull in both the action and the story. In order to get to the last mission, you have to buy all the businesses in town. Unfortunately, this means doing missions for those businesses until they give you a regular amount of money on a daily basis (so you can save up to buy the next business, etc). These missions are not nearly as fun as those that move the overall plot forward, making them seem like mere busy work.

3. One minor graphics problem. While the graphics have been improved upon in this game, Rockstar's choice to add glare on vehicle's windows backfired. Instead of looking like real glare, it appears as a fuzzy white glob on windshields until you get close enough, which then makes the glare disappear entirely. It's an annoying problem.

4. It's a bit too self-aware. GTA3 was a huge success not only because it had great gameplay, but because it was intelligent and witty. Unfortunately, GTAVC makes a concerted effort to top that. While there are some generally funny moments (the radio station VCPR is gold, and the Lovefist tour ad on VROCK is great), ultimately it seems as if the game is trying too hard to be funny.

5. Homogenous first island. Most of the first island seems rather dull and repetative compared to the rest of VC.

Vice City vs. San Andreas

To people with neither Vice City nor San Andreas: Be sure to buy VC before SA. Vice City is far more enjoyable than San Andrea due to the great characters across the whole game, the missions and the overall feel of the game. Also VC as a city is far more entertaining than the drab and boring Los Santos. I have not yet got to the other 2 cities but the fake Miami is a hundred times better than the fake LA.

The characters in VC are funnier, the missions are more interesting, and the overall experience gives the game a better feel whereas the characters in SA, across the board, are boring and lame and the missions are extremely tedious and often times boring.

While San Andreas allows you to do more than Vice City, I guarantee you that you will have a far better time doing less in Vice City than you will doing endless missions and Sim City rip-offs in San Andreas.

Definitely choose Vice City over San Andreas if you're looking for a fun game.

Flawless

I purchased this game due to the fact that I absolutely love 80's pop music. I tell you it's fun to listen to REO Speedwagon as you go around causing havoc. Even long after you've done every mission in the game, it's still fun to just go around and cause havoc. The atmosphere of Vice City really looks like it takes a step back in time, to a idealized beach that you can only see on TV reruns. One of the best games I've ever played, and its only drawback is that it seems excessively violent to me.
