The best - but could be better-much better

Well, most people here have already mentioned 1000 times what's great about the game: The graphics, physics, bla, bla , bla. I love the game too, but it could have been so much better with just a few tweeks.

-car sound. Sorry, but I hate the sound of the cars. My 600+ hp Supercharged 69 Camaro sounds like a friggin' Honda civic with a fart pipe! Please....work on the sound for GT5!!! Please!!! Make muscle sound like muscle and rice like rice. And yes, I do have surround sound with a nice receiver and speakers, even hooked up the PS2 with optical cable. Still crap!

-the license test. Ok, so I did learn something...fine! But did I really need to sit there for hours just so I could get a license I needed to get ahead in the game?? Come on, this is still just a game, ok? Oh, I didn't need the d*ckheads with the clipboards clapping, either!

-Nitrious sucks! I bought and installed the NO2 kit in two of my cars (69 Camaro SS and Audi RS4) and besides the hizzing noise, I have noticed nothing. As a matter of fact, the Camaro was almost a second slower in the 1/4 mile with the spray. Hello?!?!?!

-speaking of the 1/4 mile (400 meter track). Why couldn't they make this an actual racing event instead of a test track? With all those great musclecars, it would be nice to get some drag racing going. Please include a real 1/4 mile race in GT5!

-the stupid a** menus. Even worse than in GT3, with even worse music. Just soooo annoying! Why do you have to go to your home, then garage just to change the car??? All this back and forth crap is just a waste of time. I hate that part! Also when it keeps asking you if you're sure about exiting. Next time around they should have a couple more - like really sure and then really really sure before you can exit anything. I can read the first time around, ok?

-the fact that you can't qualify anymore, unless in a championship race. You always start last! Unless your car has about 100 more horsepower than all the others, forget about winning. Makes winning almost impossible unless you create a big mismatch by modding your car to the max or racing 200hp cars with your 600hp car.

By the way.... Not sure if anybody mentioned it yet, but your GT3 data can be transferred to GT4. Unfortunatly, you don't get your cars, but you do get the credits and licenses. You can only do this once, so if you want to start out big.... rake up some more credits, then sell your cars in GT3 and then transfer the credits.

great

This game is very fun. It has amazing graphics, possibly the best on ps2. The sound is very good, with each new car and upgrade producing a new and believalbe engine sounds. It is huge! I don't think I will ever finish this game because it is so big. There's so much to do.

I can only think of 2 bad things. The first and most important one is it is hard to get into. By that I mean you have to give the game a chance. Play it for a few days and it will keep growing and growing on you. When I first got it, sat down at my ps2, and played gt4, I was dissapointed. This was the game I waited for 2 years to come out! It was boring! When I sat down the next day to play it, I said to myself....hmmmm this game is a little better. The next day: THIS GAME IS AMAZING!!!! IT MIGHT BE THE BEST, MOST REALISTIC PS2 GAME EVER!!!. Now I am on my 4th day of playing it. It is still superb. It is also very, very challenging. I like challenging games, so this is good for me. If you don't like hard games, do not get this!

The other bad thing about his game is occasionally during the little movie before each race the game lags a little. The frame rate drops significantly and the game gets choppy. I can live with that though because I'm not a game snob or a hardcore gamer. I just play it casually when I have the time.
One of the coolest features of this game is you can import up to $100,000 from your saved gt3 game(if you had that much money) and you can import your "A" and "B" level liscences(again..if you have them). I just thought that was really cool and I don't know of any other games that have that feature.

Overall, this game is great! It's a little hard to get into at the beginning, but, Oh Well! Live with it! Give it a chance! You too will love this amazing, suberb, awesome, and challenging game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The King of Racing Games!!

This game is beyond great. During a private screening of the game with my friend I soon realized this game would be more then just another racing game. Through all aspects the quality is flawless. When first playing the game I expected the same old racing game but mostly I was in touch with the old Gran Turismo's which I adore as well. Nevertheless the game had a much wider span of world to cover then the previous Gran Turismos. The gameplay and graphics are untouchable and the networking is a sight to be looking foward to. Unlike other racing games Gran Turismo 4 gives you full realism and for future playing a prototype racing pit is being made. The cars themselves are fantastic. The huge array of different cars is eye boggling and almost made me crap in my pants. The turth of the matter is, is that this game puts the racer into the car. Unlike Need For Speed (Any title including underground 2) which did not incorporate realism Gran Turismo 4 passes even the previous Gran Turismo's. The Customizable solutions a player could come up with are almost uncountable. You can change up to anything and makes you feel as if you are actually the owner of a Mitsubishi Eclipse (Personal fav) or Nissan Skyline. The wheels and rims are also customizable. Just as in GT 3 but about 100X more advanced. This game is extremly beyond its time. All racing fanatics and or GT fanatics should grab this game ASAP. I know I have it on my Wish List and already have it pre-ordered here in J-Land! Just wait until the release and you'll know what I am talking about. This game is enough to make someone cry because of its beauty!

Just didn't have any fun with this

I can respect it for the sheer depth, the graphics, and all the simulation aspects, but shouldn't games be fun? I just didn't have any fun with this- didn't have the time to invest. A little too esoteric for me. This game is practically a hobby in itself for the amount of time and personal investment it requires- it's practically as hard as learning any real-life skill (with none of the actual-reality payoff! Woohoo!)I just paid 50 dollars to take a hundred consecutive driving tests in a 1990 Nissan Skyline?

Bottom line- a game is a game, and a game should be fun. Play before you buy!!

Probably the best racing game ever and best looking game of this generation

Gran Turismo has been my favorite racing franchise, it has just been so much fun to play. Now GT4 has come and it is the best in the series.

First is the gameplay variety, there are over 700 cars(!!) and nearly 100 tracks to play on(including Nurburgring WOW). Just with THAT its enough to get lost in it, but the Sim Mode takes the word Depth to a whole new level. There is so much to do and you can play for months on end.

As always the Physics and Sound are absolutley top notch. The cars Drive and sound like the real thing and i just think its insane that PD got all the specs for the cars in the game ( No wonder it was delayed so long). There are also some really LMAO cars such as the Ford Model T and the Mrecedes Daimler Carrige ( which by the way has like 15 HP and has an amazing Top speed of 11 MPH). The soundtrack I thought was better than GT3 but most people disagree, however it has a lot of songs from almost every Genre.

And of course there are the graphics. If i could sum it up in one word it would be amazing. Makes the Xbox360 look lame in comparison with Ridge R*cer 6....now think about that. Sometimes you're playing the game and you actually FEEL like your looking at a real-life race. The cars look incredible and the scenery of the tracks look incredibly lifelike and so much like the real thing. It's easy to get lost in this for hours and not realize you're sitting in your home. The game pulls you in with its realism.

So, you can tell I think this game is just unbelivable. The graphics and the gameplay are so in depth you really have to wonder how the PS2 can pull this kind of power. But it does, and I can't wait for Visions Gran Turismo (the online version coming in late 2006).
Theres no online play (actually there is a way to play online, all you need is a DSL router, Online Adapter and a certain program called Xlink Kai VII Evolution. Nevertheless, that isnt enough to drag down the best racing game ever and the BEST looking game of this generation. If you even like racing games even a little, you owe it to yourself to grab this one. Why not, It's onlyd $19.95 at Amazon ;)

ummmmmmmmm Hunny you still playing...

I bought this for my husband... um yep he's still at it.. He never touched and video game until I got him GT2 then 3 came out and he showed a little more interest.. Now 4 well lets just say He is on it when ever he gets time. Cars , lots of cars. Tracts that will challege even the toughest driver. So much to offer in a little CD package. The image quality is so realistic that at times you have to make yourself remember that they are not real. The places you can see and the roads you can travel... wow is all i can think of knowing it hardly touches the beauty you will we see. And going by how often I hear my hubby yell at the other drivers on the field shows me just how it draws you into its reality... Well worth the price I think... wonder if its my turn to play now....

An Incredible Driving Game!!

This game is awesome. There isn't much of a better way to put it. It's the best racing game I've ever played, which is what I said about the first 3 installments of this game. Gran Turismo 4 takes the already very good features of GT3 and just makes them a little more slick in appearance, and in some cases made the features more intuitive. For instance, when getting ready to race, you used to have to select a different set of options to either change parts or change settings. Now they are accessable on the same screen, making it a lot easier to have access to all the aspects of the car at the same time. Just one example of many. The graphics are incredible, there are a lot of different cars, certainly enough to keep most people happy, and lots more tracks (and some really interesting tracks too, I might add). I am thoroughly happy with this game. As for the fact that it doesn't allow for online play, well, I didn't hate the others for not being online either. If this wasn't the best racing game on the market, I might hold that against it, but as this is miles above anything else, I'll hope they do it in the future. I've always appreciated the fact that this game DOESN'T change that much from one installment to another. The graphics always get tons better, and the options seem to get tweaked a little more every time, but it's obvious that polyphony doesn't impliment a change to this game without it working flawlessly. And that's what this game practically is. I love it, I'll be playing it for a long long time. The replayability is also one of the best features of this whole game title.

As for the critism. I guess it comes down what you play a racing game for. If you like the driving aspect of it, this series has been the best for a long time. If you like to compete against other people and you don't care that much about tweaking the cars, then the lack of online play won't attract you and the tweaking won't thrill you. But seriously, with the exception of online play, exactly how much better can a racing game get? For those who are upset because it's a lot like GT3, did you play GT1 or 2? Just off hand, how different did you expect it to be? Did you expect the cars to transform and start thrilling you with Tekken-style fighting action? It's a racing game, not rocket science. The fact that GT4 might be something like the other 3 doesn't exactly come as a surprise.

To anyone who likes racing games or car games, this is the authority in driving games, and I whole heartedly recommend it as one of the best games I've ever played. If driving games aren't your bag, skip it and go back to playing SoCom, Tiger Woods, or whatever it is that you like.

What did you expect?

Its Gran Turismo, theres really nothing more to say. I own all the titles in this franchise and I have never been disappointed with any one of em. The series is really amazing. With every new release it only gets better. People should also try Tourist Trophy which is setting another standard in moto racing.

The best racing game so far.

By far this is the best GT game so far. I like that the races are more realistic than the 3rd GT. Also, there are 650 cars in the game that you can race. I think there is only on thing that is bad. So much trial and error. Licessne tests are to hard in Ia and Super.

rolling starts and no qualifications

First off let me say I've been a fan of this series since Game 1. Having said that, I think this one is the best so far. I loved GT3, but I missed how there weren't as many cars as there were in GT2. Well, that's all back in GT4. Supposedly there are 600-700 cars. I haven't had time to see them all yet, but I'm very happy that you can once again purchase USED cars! That's right! You don't have to start the game out with some 120 horsepower new car that you can barely afford. I was able to purchase a used '92 Mitsubishi Lancer with close to 250 horsepower! To start with!

I also like the addition of the B-Spec mode. I was a little confused when I read about it before I actually played the game, but it's really pretty innovative and wasn't at all what I expected. I was expecting just a simple "auto-drive" thing and to be honest it sounded pretty boring. This isn't just a one-mode AI driver like the computer opponents though. Basically when you start a race in B-Spec mode, you have no direct control over the car, but you have control over the driver's "mode". By using the left-right arrows on the controller, you can shift between numbers on a 5-number system. Setting it at 1 will cause your driver to simply cruise along (I havent' ever actually had it at 1, so I don't know exactly what will happen). With the setting at 5, the driver will drive incredibly aggresively (and sometimes stupidly). If your tires aren't the best or your car is slightly unstable, chances are if your driver tries to take a tight turn with this set to 5--he'll end up in the grass. You can shift between these settings as the race progresses. It's actually pretty fun. I like to use the 5 setting (known as "push") on straightaways, and tone it down to 3 ("Steady") for tricky turns. The more you use B-Spec, the better you do, the higher your "B-Spec" skill level goes up, and the better your driver becomes on his own in B-spec mode.

As far as the overall graphics and improvements go, the physics feel a lot better, the controls are great, and surprisingly the graphics ARE better. And I'm not even able to utilize the Hi-Def support.

The only 2 things I don't like about the game so far are:

- Lack of Qualifying round.
- Too many races with "rolling starts"

Great game! Just hope it doesn't suck up too much of my time.
