When the first God of War came out, you almost couldn't escape the massive hype and praise it received. From its gameplay to its outrageous violence and "emotional storyline", many critics and fans alike absolutely fell in love with it...except me. Sure gameplay-wise it was slightly fun at times but it was unbelievably repetitive, needlessly frustrating at times and the storyline wasn't exactly emotional at all. So of course the inevitable sequel comes out during the Playstation 2's final days and like many blockbusters, it's bigger, it's badder but not necessarily better.
Story: Despite my grievances about the presentation about the original's storyline which felt more emotionally neutered despite the scenes revealing Kratos' past, this game just feels wrong. Instead of redemption and atonement for his sins, this game is basically a big hissy fit on his part when he's "Metroid"'d of his powers and has to face Zeus. This is essentially like hunting Ares only this time it's Zeus.
Graphics: Of course the graphics impress although not much has changed since the original. The world still feels believable and interactive and the level design, while a step down, is still nicely done. Where the game shines, as usual, are its FMV's which are very cinematic and sharp in their quality.
Sound/Music: Aside from the VA actor doing Kratos who essentially just plays "angry" throughout the whole thing, everyone almost has a B-movie quality in their voice. As for the music, it's sound big and epic with its choir and strings but it's largely forgettable with nary a memorable hook anywhere.
Gameplay: Basically the main thing is the combos. Blessed with many weapons and skills, Kratos has to fight (and fight) legions of enemies with big, complex moves. While they look cool, you'll soon discover quickly some work better than others and you'll just end up re-using them. As well, Kratos is given some new spells such as a bow and arrow, lightning and others. Nothing new really as changed, just the names. Whether it's a case of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" or just simply a lack of wanting to change things up is anyone's guess.
As for the game itself, there are times where it's a bit frustrating but it seems almost more tolerable. There's still things like repeatedly pressing a button to open doors which was a dumb idea although trying to stab minotaurs no longer requires you to quickly press the O button and have your fingers fall off like the last one. Puzzles, unlike the more brain-teasers of Zelda and Ico, are strictly relegated to trial and error. Try that. Nope, died. Try this. Nope, died. Oh ok, so you do this? Ah, there we go. That's it, no logic benders or things that make you think, just exhaust all possibilities of a solution till you finally find it.
Is this a game worth buying? Well if you've loved the last one, you'll love this one too although how much more is hard to say. And if you didn't like the last one, this one ain't going to change your mind one bit.

To reverberate what was said before, if this game is the last hurrah for the PS2, then it's going out with style. What can I say that hasn't been said before. Superb gameplay, engrossing story, breathtaking graphics, and an experience unlike anything I've ever seen in playable form. Congrats to the GoW2 team for another instant classic. I can't wait to see what they can do with the PS3. Hands down, the best game available on the best system of all time. What a way to go out.

God I love this game. I've been hooked since I began playing it. First of all, Kratos stands alongside videogame heroes like Ryu Hayabusa and Mario as one of the coolest, deepest characters in the gaming universe. He could tear the Prince of Persia(a rather overrated series)in half, yet his story is deep and intricate. Sure, this series is really hyped as well, but unlike PoP, this series deserves the praise it gets.
*SPOILERS*
In the first game, you slayed Ares, the God of War, and took his place. Kratos uses this to erase his past, and goes on a killing rampage. Zeus betrays you, and your goal is to go back to the moment Zeus killed you and slay him. Your controls are very smooth. Kratos' blades, in addition to being cool, make the controls excellent. The first game was awesome enough, and this takes it up a notch further. The one problem the first game had was a lack of boss fights. This game does well to fix that problem. The first GoW only had three bosses. In this game, you'll go through 3 boss fights and still be in the early stages of the game. Violent? You bet! You spend about 95% of the game fighting, while the other 5% is spent solving very difficult puzzles. This game is very challenging. You'll die A LOT. I don't care how good you are at gaming. This isn't your ordinary hack and slash. Reflexes are required, especially in boss fights. You'll have to dodge and press button combinations to avoid being killed, or else you won't last long. You'll be thrown many surprises, most of which spell instant death if not avoided. Oh yeah, did I mention that you are rewarded for getting laid in this game? How awesome is that?!
Overall, this game is a must have. You don't even need to rent this(you won't be able to fully enjoy this with a rental anyway), just buy it!
And the Oscar goes to . . .

For those who like to play games like Onimusha, Devil may cry, or Prince of persia, they definitely will love this game. even if you like 300 (the movie) and video-gaming, GOW2 is a must-have for you. throughout the game you will keep saying "oh my god" not because you are slaughtering a god but because the game is extremely enjoyable. Certainly, the crown of PS2's best title will land on GOW2's head. a little piece of advice: if you haven't played the 1st GOW, i think you should play this one on easy mode since it's a conflict with gods.
truly a great game with few annoyances

wow, this is a truly great game. pure and simply one of the best action adventure games to come along in ages. fun boss battles that keep you on your toes and making you think. fun game play that is fast and exciting. great graphics. etc. etc. everything you want in a next gen game is here, it almost looks so good it could be on the ps3 or xbox 360. there isnt a lot of complaints i can say about this game. for the most part this game is that darn good. although i will say if you didnt like the first one, there is nothing in this one to make you change your mind. the action and gameplay are pretty much the same, although you do have a few more weapons at your disposal, althouh the original athenas blades are what youll be using most of the time, making you wonder why they even bothered adding more weapons to begin with. theres no real situation in the game where you needed to swap or even upgrade the other weapons. save for a scene or two where you have the weapon as part of the story line. final battle (where you cant upgrade it till the second playthrough anyways).
some may say that this game is pretty much the same old stuff we saw in the first one, which is true, but since the first one was so fun to play, why fix what is not broken? the games a blast to play. the game came out a good amount of time after the first one so its pretty fresh and feels new again. plus the new and more numerous bosses in this one make the game feel new enough. several boss battles require brain power on how to beat them, instead of just plain old button mashing, especially in the higher difficulty levels. i will say this about the gameplay. hopefully when GOW3 comes out on the PS3 they do add more gameplay elements and tweaks, or the game will start to get that sequelitis rehash feel to it.
many people mentioned the puzzles in this game. while its true that some of them got annoying and they were in more abundance than the first game, none of them came close to being the agonizing torture that was the hades blade wall climb of the first game, and a lot of them were actually trying (i said trying) to be creative, sometimes succeeding sometimes failing. and there wasnt really a point in the game where i was like dang i need a stratagy guide STAT!!! im horrible at thinking mans puzzles. i get frustrated way too quick. this game didn;t get my blood boiling to bad. anjd most of the time if you are dying due to a puzzle start looking around your surroundings, cause most of the slolutions are close to that area, whether it be a wall to climb to get to a monster hive to prevent them from continually respawning so you can lower a grapple point or a statue to push to block a wave of fire.
the only really annoying thing that i really could do with out in this game is every door you open you have to continually press the O button to open it. it not only gets tiring but it gets annoying. oh and sometimes i wish the camera showed more of the path you needed to go to. of course then again its better this way than the fidgity manual camera in most action games, which ges you killed more times than helping.
overall though, this game is truly fun, and although it has some imperfections (all games do)none come close to ruining a fine experience.
4.5 out of 5.
Yes, it is awesome.

Straight to the point, this game is awesome. The team has basically raised GoW to a whole bigger level. The graphics, for the PS2, are amazing. I would highly suggest getting some component cables to view this game in all its glory with the progressive scan turned on. Everything is left intact and improved upon. The brutality is there, the excellent voice acting, the new combat moves. The levels are huge and very well detailed. For the story, Kratos is basically pissed off at every divine power of Olympus and sides with some rather big allies. The ending only leaves it open to a sequel, which I am eagerly anticipating. Buy this game and you will enjoy it.Sony Playstation 2 Component AV Cable

I didn't think it was possible but God of War II is every bit as good as the original. The storyline, voice talent, graphics and mechanics of the game are still top notch. The game seems a little shorter but that could quite possibly be due to the fact that I didn't have to outswim a speeding underwater barrier like in the first one...or maybe it was the absence of those cursed spinning knife totems that I repeatedly fell off of inches from the top. I cringe just thinking about it.
The game remains challenging although not nearly as frustrating as the first. The story is completely engrossing and the cut scenes are nothing short of fabulous. If you're concerned that this time around you'll have a kinder, gentler Kratos...think again. This guy has issues and works them out by slaughtering everything in his path. Definitely not for kids but the rest of us can delight in the sheer chaos.
Some of the unlockables are downright silly though...like replaying the game dressed in a fish costume...yeah, it's funny for about 5 minutes. Still, the God Of War games are to the Playstation 2 what the Splinter Cell series were initially to the XBox. YOU HAVE TO HAVE THEM!
Praise be the glory of God of War 2

I just beat GOW II and I just have to share my experience. This is one of the rare sequels that surpass the original in every way possible, in terms of game play, graphics, storyline and totally deliverers in the balls to the wall action department. Some of the reviewers on this page complained that there were too many puzzles which I totally disagree with (it's not as much or as hard as you would think), I appreciate a game that makes me use my brain and slow the pace down after a tough session of slicing undead soldiers and ripping off gorgons heads.
Another point some reviewers mentioned that it is too short. To me the GOW II is about twice as long as the original with brutal bosses (it may seem short if you played on mortal/easy mode). The environments are beautiful and huge total kudos to the art team on this game some times I had to stop and marvel at some of the views.
The music is cool but I miss some of the sounds from the original that's the only complaint that I have. This is a game that no PS2 library should be without.

It's so rare that a sequel can hold a flame to the first title. GOW 2 is definately one of best sequels that I have played in a long time in the action platformer genre. All of the moves and mechanics are the same, perhaps a bit improved from the first. The upgrades are similar but different enough to know that you're not playing the exact same game. There are great new enemies and secrets all over the place, and the most of the puzzles are fairly well done. Great boss battles, some of which are simply epic. While I will agree with some critics that the story line is a little off pace from the original, this is definately not a hinderance and still well done. GOW is a must have title for any gamer, and once you're hooked in to the game, GOW 2 is a gotta have it now. I am one of those people who always want more game out of a title like this and GOW 2 was worth the wait. Even if you haven't played the first one, GOW 2 does very well as a stand alone title, although you may not get some of the backreferences.
This is the must own PS2 title of the year. I am already a next gen player, but this one is worth going back to the old system for!!

Great game ... amazing graphics especially considering the console. The overall game was a bit too short.
