no way to compare it to GOW I this series is one of the best games I ever played, it's like a movie. SnakeEater I thought was the best game I ever played then along comes Kratos. I played about the first 45min. of the game and this one is a must have. I expect it to be the game of the year.
You loved the first...and now it's time for more

If you enjoyed the first God of War, which by all accounts is the best game released on the PS2, you'll have to love this one too. Good storyline, good music, good puzzles. Rumor has it there are a ton of easter eggs burried that only winning levels perfectly will get you. Teach those Greek gods a lesson with those crazy weapons and put that old PS2 to use, it misses you.
Cheers
The PS2 is not done yet

While a lot of people already have next generation systems you should not pass this up over another next gen game. This game is brilliant, I dare say the best that has come out for the PS2. The gameplay is engaging and addictive, and the graphics are beautiful. Any fan of God of War must play GOW 2. It somehow tops one of the most amazing games of all time. If you haven't played God of War, play it first. But seriously buy GOW 2, play it, enjoy it, and savor the last gem of the PS2.
Great game. Did anyone really have any doubts?

They say if it isn't broken, don't fix it. If there was anything I was afraid of it would be that they'd start turning Kratos into a more caring and sympathetic hero as sequels sometimes do. They did the right thing. Kratos is still as uncaring for others as he always was, killing anyone including begging innocents to further his ambitions. This is the most impressive franchise to grace any system in a very long time.
There are some games that are just really good games.
And then there are some games that will forever change an entire genre of games. The God of War franchise easily slips into this category of infamy.
After thinking long and hard to make the difficult decision over which of the two was better I ultimately still like the first one best, but God of War II makes it very hard to determine which is the favorite which says a whole hell of a lot. It's amazing in every way and the thrills and gameplay do not slack off one bit from the original.
If video games were ever considered to be works of art, this is the Mona Lisa of video game franchises. Hats off to the team that made it possible.
Friggin' awesome

I was a big fan of the original game, and I insisted on finishing it before I started this one. It was a good move, because the first game goes a great job of slowly unravelling the story of Kratos and some of the characters from his past visions from GOW1 make an appearance in GOW 2. This game really takes the story of Kratos to the next level and tells the compelling story of a strong and bitter warrior having to deal with a painful past while being manipulated and betrayed by powerful forces (i.e. Gods). Fortunately, if you missed the first GOW this game does an OK job of filling you in on some highlights of the previous game without spoiling much.
Some of the moves have changed from GOW1 and there are tons more weapons and abilities in GOW2. The story is compelling, graphics are astounding, the music is intense sets the mood well, and the voice acting is fantastic. I could easily just sit back and watch somebody else play the game and feel almost as immersed in the story as if I was playing.
This game is a must buy!
Absolutely amazing!!!!!!

I just couldn't put this game down. Once I started playing it there was no getting me off the couch. Overall game content was awesome. Controls were flawless and story line was even better than the first one. Combat pretty much remains the same but that's to be expected. This game was just too good. I am definitely looking forward to the next one. You'll be happy you bought this game.

Basically God of War was one of the best games ever made. God of War II simply takes off where the first one ended. The controls are much smoother, which is saying quite a bit as God of War I has a very smooth feel. They took out some of the glitches of the first games, most notibly with the grab button, and took out the horrid blades of hades, and there is no puzzle that annoying in the game. God of War II goes above and beyand on every aspect of this game. Lasting almost twice as long you wont even notice the time you put into the game. While the puzzels are much more challenging they flow much better into the combat, and the combat is on a whole new level. While removing the focus on aeral moves takes away one aspect i loved in the first game God of War II really expands on ground combat. The new moves combined with the magic attacks leaves you wanting only for stonger enemies to continue your combo. The story is the only part of this game that i wish was better. After playing through the first one and having that good of a story i kept wanting more of Kratos's past, however as they gave us so much of it in the last game there was little they could do to expand it, so basically God of War II is a story of revenge. Which is not a bad thing, just because its not as original as the first one, it is still better than most games. Overall i would say if you havent played the first game go with that one, becuase it basically set the bar for how i will rate every game i play again, and the story is definately worth checking out, but if you already beat the first game, this game is for you.

I bought this game for my husband as a Valentine's Day gift because he loved the first one so much. I'm not a game person myself, but I actually used to love to watch him play God of War (#1) and try to help him figure out the "tricks". Well, since then, he has moved his PS2 into the garage (which he refers to as "The Man Show"), so I haven't seen him play God of War 2 at all. :( Just not my thing to sit on a bar stool in the garage and watch him play, which, come to think of it, was probably his intended purpose! But seriously, he is a 38 year-old criminal defense attorney, and playing his games is a stress-relief for him, so I was really excited to be able to surprise him with this game. He loves it!

I'm sure most of what I have to say about this game has already been said by countless other people...fantastic game, cool level design, great mix of fighting and puzzles, great graphics and sound, and terrific cutscenes. But I do have one thing to add. I said it about the first game and I'll say it again: I absolutely love Easy Mode! I'm a casual gamer who's in it more for the adventure than the challenge, and I don't think there are enough games for people like me. It's great to know that I'll most likely make it through the entire game without ever screaming at the television or punching a wall in frustration! So kudos to the game designers for once again giving us a game with options for level of difficulty.
I am very impressed!

Perhaps the last superb game we will ever see on the PS2 (playing this on my PS3)? You betcha! Surpassing perfection is a very difficult task indeed.
Note: Im guessing all those on this amazon page and reading this have at least played the first GOW.
When I first heard about the sequel, I thought to myself "they set the bar so high, it will be virtually impossible to top this one", I also though "I bet the graphics will be better though". To say that, after playing the game, is an understatement. Boy, was I wrong!!!!
I am mesmerized by Sony's excellence in developing this game. The plot is just as good and imaginary-convincing (Greek-mythology-world-with-a-twist-based speaking). At first I thought it was lame, but as the story unravelled, I took it all back. The graphics are way much better than the first, especially witnessed in the cutscenes. Kratos' combos are a vast improvement. The weapons/accessories options are A LOT more (we have the blades, a hammer, the two edged spear, freezing time amulet, wings to glide, 4 awesome titan-powers, the fleece), giving us more methods to approach the game and fight our way through. Riding Pegasus and fighting Perseus were spectacular experiences as well.
As an opposing view to other reviewers, the puzzles are not as much, and surprisingly, not as difficult. What I found difficult, is finding all the chests, and the bonus material (such as the urns, also in chests, and obtaining all the eyes -needed- you take out from Cyclops' eyes). The game is just so full of things, that players are bound to miss a few.
Kratos' movement itself has been expanded on and not as rigid as in the first GOW. For example, now instead of just scaling walls up and down, Kratos can now move on the ceiling, while thrusting his blades into the granite.
There are memorable scenes that are really breathtaking as well. The one scene where Kratos has to swing past pillars using his blades spiderman style (with the music playing in the background) was a rush in itself. Truly amazing.
From afar, both GOW and GOW2 set a superb storyline. Aligned with the gods, against one god, then aligned with the titans, against the leader of the gods. Nice! I have heard that the third installment will be developed straight for the PS3, and given the developers' endless reservoir of imagination and perfection in delivering... it will definitely hit a home-run and won't be considered "too much".
I can go on and on marveling GOW2. There was a large consensus that GOW was the best PS2 game ever. I
think it has met its match, by its own sequel.
If you haven't bought this yet, get the best deal you can on this game and buy it ASAP, regardless of your age (im almost 25 and not a game freak, not anymore that is). If somehow -albeit a remote possibility- you're still debating whether to enter the GOW world, stop wasting time debating this and buy both, and start with the first, as playing this 'sequelly' is definitely more fun, and very entertaining story-telling wise.
Sony, you pulled another one! One hell of a job.
