Flawed port of one of the greatest games ever made.

Deus Ex: The Conspiracy for the PS2 is all in all a terrible game. It brings shame to the great PC version.

The Good: Cool storyline, RPG elements allow you to mold character however you want, nice training.

The Bad!: Worst graphics I've ever seen on PS2, arguably, the ugliest PS2 game ever made. Controls are incredibly awkward and difficult to learn. No new features added to the PS2 version. Changing weapons requires going back to the menu every time. Some minor elements from PC version were removed (like being able to choose your characters face). Looks like a first generation PS1 game rather than a mid generation PS2 game. Game is difficult to get into without mouse and keyboard. Characters facial movements are never in sync with speech. Horrible slowdown.

Ultimately, the PS2 version of Deus Ex is one of the worst ports ever made. The graphics are nauseatingly bad for a PS2 game. Graphics definitely aren't everything in a game (Just ask me I play SNES RPG's all the time and I think they're the best ever made), but there is no excuse for employing such an outdated graphics engine. The developers had plenty of time to fix up the graphics, address the slowdown, add some new features, and give PS2 owners a taste of what Deus Ex is all about. It's simply a shame that they ruined a game that had so much potential.

I've been tricked

I was curious about this game. My brother loved the pc version and loads of people have been raving about in the reviews so I bought it for the PS2 eagerly opened it and started playing. I have to admit I didn't even get past the first level. The movement is horrible, I was expecting something as well done as Red Factions movement. The frame rate drops constantly. To put it another way, it felt like I was playing a first person shooter that predates Doom (for any of you who don't know, Doom was one of the first first person shooter games ever)or it seems like a first person shooter done on the original playstation. It seems like this port was half done and was relying on the popularity of the PC game to sell it. So as not to be totally negative I did think it was a cool story and that you could make decisions in the game that affected how the game progresses, but unfortunatly a game cannot be considered good just b/c the story is good. If you are still considering buying this half finished game, I'd suggest you rent it first or buy it for the PC (there are even adapters so you can use your PS2 controller with a PC now). If this were the first PS2 game I ever played I would have gotten a gamecube of xbox.

Good game but I hated it

You know, 5 years ago and several FPS before, I probably would have loved this game. The story is very good and actually in my opinion bares some slight semblance to reality, at least in terms of how the politics work. There are a lot of ways you can go through the game that make give you some leeway.

I guess for me though, none of it clicked. I had the story figured out after the beginning of the second mission, and basically you can sneak everywhere or kill everything. In the meantime your skills (swimming, lockpicking, computers) determine the secret stuff you can get. The thing is it's REALLY boring and REALLY time consuming to sneak around so after you get caught twice you're tired of it. And the shooter engine isn't as good as other FPS. So basically, it's a bad FPS with a good story that I already knew. Too bad, it had potential.

HUGE disappointment

I like alot of other reviewers here got this game because everyone had the PC version and was ranting and raving about how great it was.

I'm not gunna dwell much on the graphics, because if you've read any of the other reviews you'll know it looks like an atari game. Not even to be mean, trying to figure out the "multiple" ways to solve a problem is pretty darn tough when everything in the game looked like a pixilated mess. Probably the one thing i couldnt get over the during the game was the sound effects. Another reviewer said he thought the sounds were a 10/10. He must have had the volume REAL low, cuz toy guns sound more convincing. I remember playing through the 1st level trying out the non gunfire weapons (knives, swords etc) and laughed out loud at the sound effects. THEN found out guns made the same noise! Regardless of any weapon you use the only sound effect you get is a Whapping sound that could be compared to snapping your belt. It made the game more humorous than anything else.

So we all know how bad it looks and sounds, how about how well it plays. I've never played the computer version, but the ps2 version is a clunky mess. Everytime you look around, a bright green box surrounds anything important. Sounds helpful, but when you are in the middle of a gun fight and the auto aim switches over to highlight a plant or something stupid its fairly frustrating. As other people mentioned, everytime you do anything such as switch a weapon or use an item you need to switch from menu to menu. This completely broke any level of enjoyment I rarely got out of this catastrophe of a game.

Dont let the price fool you, this game is an ugly mess. I even got it for less used a video game store, and couldnt even finish it because i couldnt take this mess seriously. Do yourself a favor and buy a better ps2 game.

Controls are Awkard

This game would be alot better if your character could move straight ahead and sideways easily and if the weapons cycled faster.

The view presented by Deus Ex is just awful and isn't easily dealt with. Hopefully Doom 3 will be much better than this game.

One thing though -- the cheat code is very useful and without it Deus Ex would be frustrating useless junk.

NOT the same as the PC Version (Despite what you read).

Deux Ex for the PC may have been the Game of the Year -- but this translation to the PS2 format has it's flaws. Chiefly among them is the fact that the levels have been disected into smaller map-chunks (I'm assuming in order to fit into the PS2's memory). So, as you move around, say, the first level (Statue of Liberty), you'll round a corner and the entire game will stop and display a progress bar as the next memory-chunk of the SAME level will begin. This was a major disappointment for me since I was excitedly awaiting the PS2 version after bemoaning the difficulty playing the game on a computer keyboard instead of a Playstation controller. I'm a bit confused at why the game is programmed this way. Was it just easier for EIDOS to piece together the PS2 game this way? I find it hard to believe that the PS2 could not accommodate the huge levels incoroporated into the Deux Ex version for PC. As an example -- look at the huge seamless levels of Jack & Daxter, one of the best games for the PS2.

Anyway, I just wanted to ensure that someone pointed this out as it is not mentioned anywhere else that I am aware of. I probably would not have purchased this game if I had been aware of the choppy gameplay as a result of this level disection.

This is one of the most exceptional games of this era in terms of plot and character development. The only begging thing sometimes is the music...now to the good parts. First, the AI of both the Mac and PC side was tricky -- sometimes exceptionally brilliant and sometimes NOT. Next, one gains skills (augmentations) along the way to further the character's development. This requires the gamer to put at least some thought into the character. Third, each kill can determine what happens next...friend or foe or somewhere in between. This adds some complexity to the plot. Fourth, this plot is basically a mixture of the X-Files conspiracies ranging from Roswell to the Illuminati, and like the X-Files, there are betrayals and breaks of trust everywhere along the way. Lastly, some of the weapons are exceptional -- like the Dragon Sword.

Word of caution: Some of the AI gets really humorous at the end -- when the enemies start running into closed doors while you watch...and they keep on running...=)

Great game - not perfect - but great

Deus Ex is a FPS with a science fiction bent that actually produces an interesting combination. You don't need the cheat codes to succeed in the game. Game is very long and the plot is pretty interesting (although I am only 85% done with it). Graphics are pretty good and game play is good. Clearly the complexity of the plot and the augmentation power-ups make the game unique. Controls are pretty clumsy but can be operated efficiently as experience is gained. The medium level is pretty easy, so I bet replay is decent playing at a harder level. Overall a pretty solid and engrosing game.

nothing special, but pretty good action and storyline. Only bad part is that the graphics look like they're from 1997. It is definitely worth the money though.
