I just about finished Burnout 3:Takedown when--lo and behold!--Burnout:Revenge just so happened to hit the shelves. How convenient!
For those of you who--like me--are still coming off of Burnout 3, I'm going to breakdown the major differences in these two games:
Perhaps the most welcome addition to BR is that you can actually smash into cars FROM BEHIND without crashing yourself! There is a catch to this, though, head-on traffic, sideway's traffic, and hitting an oversized vehicle from behind will still total your car.
On the down side, I think that this feature decreases the challenge aspect by quite a bit. In BO3, if you hit a car, you were done for, so you were either a stellar driver with super-sharp reflexes, or not.
Remember how tired you got in BO3 with the Elimator laps--doing FIVE of them consecutively to win the race? BR has improved the Eliminator races by having instead five 30 second periods. Whoever is in last place at the end of these periods is eliminated. Makes the event much quicker and less tedious.
Racing events have stayed the same, for the most part, but now there are shortcuts. You can win the race without shortcuts, but you're more likely to win if you use them. Note: Your CPU players ALSO use the shortcuts, so watch out!
BO3 had a Face Off event. BR has no Face Off event, but you still win cars like crazy after doing races or outstanding feats.
But BO3 had no Traffic Attack Event like BR does. In this event you intentionally run into traffic--preferably traffic that is going the same way as you, unless you like crashing.
Burning Laps/Preview Laps are pretty much the same in both games, but of course BR has the shortcuts. I have a small complaint with the Burning Laps in BR: Getting a medal in this even is either too easy or too hard. Example: On one track I boosted 90%--if not 100%--of the whole track--without crashing-- and didn't get a gold medal! You almost HAVE TO use the shortcuts to get gold in these events. BUT, on the opposite hand, if you drive, slow as hell, casually, like I did once (in a Preview Lap), with no intention of winning, I still somehow got a Bronze medal.
Ah yes--CRASH MODE. This is where BO3 and BR REALLY differ and this is also where I have my chief--but few complaints--with the game. In BO3, you controlled how quick of a "takeoff" you wanted once the crash event started. If you wanted boost, just bump into the boost icon. Bump into the other icons to multiply your score, etc.
But, in BR, it is much different. You still control how fast you "takeoff", at the beginning of the event, but now you have a bar and by pressing a button you make a meter shoot up. The higher the meter is on the bar, the faster you start. No big deal, a bit more Luck, than Skill, for my taste, but where the BIG PROBLEM is, is that no matter how slow or fast you start, no matter how light or heavy your vehicle is, you ALWAYS swerve uncontrollably to the right or left about two times before you can straighten out! You can not imagine how aggravating this is and how many times you will prematurely crash into guardrails, lightpoles, or other objects.
However, once you get past this annoying part, the crash event is pretty much the same, but without the bonus icons, because you will be doing so much damage anyway you won't need 4x multipliers.
I also sorely miss the presence of a garage to see at a glance all the cars I've won.
But the Carl's Jr. Gut truck is definitely cool to smash into things!
Despite my few complaints, BR is a GREAT game, with LOTS of replay value.
Good but not great

As a big fan of Burnout 2 and Burnout 3, I was anxious to get the newest entry in the series. However, I was disappointed at some of the choices the programmers made. Let me first state that my favorite part of the previous games was "Crash" mode. In the new game, "Crash" is nowhere near as fun as it was. First of all, you can't simply play "Crash" as a stand-alone game. And as other reviewers have noted, the start mechanic takes away a lot of player control. And crime of crimes, they've done away with the instant replay! Restarting takes way longer than it should, and the crash courses just don't have the same "I gotta do that again" feel that the other games had. In the regular racing mode, some of the obstacles are too hard to see -- you find yourself crashing into things that you didn't know were there. On the plus side, it is indeed fun to rear end cars and knock them out of the way. The graphics and car handling are excellent. My advice: if you're new to the series, buy Burnout 3 instead. If you're a fan of the series, you should rent this before you buy it. If it was $20 (as it will be 6 or 8 months from now), it'd be a no brainer purchase. At full price, I'd have to say it's not a good value.

This is the newest installment of the Burnout series. And in my opinion, it is the best.
1. Although it doesn't have single event mode, you can still play a single event by going to the world tour mode and choosing any event in that, it's practically the same thing.
2. This game brings new things into the Burnout series, just as each game before this one has. In this game, the new parts include Traffic Attack, Shortcuts, and several different types of cars. Some cars in this game will even go 210 mph.
3. Traffic Attack and Checking Traffic is an extremely fun thing to do. The Traffic Attack events aren't amazingly fun, but just having the ability to "check" traffic (Which is ramming cars, that are travelling in the same direction as you, from behind and sending them into your opponents, which in turn crashes the opponent.) is very, very fun!
4. The shortcuts are one of the best new additions to the Burnout Series in my opinion. It makes the game so much faster and extreme. The shortcuts aren't really that short though, when you come out of them you usually end up only a little bit more ahead of the opponents that didn't take the shortcut, but sometimes that's all that matters. There are so many shortcuts in the tracks that if you were to race at one track twice in a row, you probably would not have gone the exact same way.
5. Some shortcuts can send you through the air which could make you land on your opponents which is a new takedown called a Vertical Takedown. There's no greater feeling than landing on your opponent from 3 stories up and watching them crash at 210 mph.
6. The tracks are also now built for battling. There are a lot more obstacles in this game which increases it's fun by a lot!
7. The graphics have improved some from the previous game. A brownish-orangish tint was added to the coloring which makes the game seem more realistic. Also damage physics to cars has greatly increased. The cars that crash are completely destroyed!
8. Another new thing in the game is that you are given a rank and once you beat a certain amount of the game, you are given a higher rank and so on, until you get to Elite.
9. The only thing I don't like about this game is that there is a golf-swing-like beginning in crash mode. You have to time the the bar on the left of the screen just right or you might blow your engine. It's okay though, it's very easy to do.
10. Oh, another thing I don't like is the soundtrack, but I usually listen to my own music while playing videogames anyway.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go play it right now.
Even your dust will be eating your dust!!

So I walk into the Base Exchange yesterday and I saw every gamer's dream, a $50 game that some careless worker had mispriced for only $19.95!!! It was just lying there and all the other copies of Burnout: Revenge were priced at $49.95. I quickly snatched it up and ran to the counter and smiled in glee as the cashier was forced to give me a $30 dollar discount even after the game was rung up at $49.95....
My body quivered in excitement as I loaded the game into the PS2 that had recently been only used for a few quick battles of DBZ: Budokai 3 and NFL 2K5. I lost track of everything that was happening around me after that moment.
This game is incredible. The cars are just beautiful and it's amazing how the PS2 handles the details of the car and scenery flying by at 200 mph with such great clarity. The scenery even reflects off your paint beautifully! The speed in this game is represented to such perfection that I found myself leaning where I wanted to turn and cringing in pain and feeling the adrenaline pump through my heart everytime I crashed into a wall or large 18wheeler that just wasnt getting out of the way. Flying through rush hour traffic and knocking everyone out of your way, catching major airtime on bridges on a mountainside before crashing down on an opponent and taking him out of the race, zigzagging through alleyways and interstates at such breakneck speeds until your goosebumps get goosebumps, causing a 30 car pileup at one intersection before blowing up and causing another 30 car pileup at another intersection!!...it's crazy and all represented here!!
All the Midnight Clubs, Gran Turismos, Fast and Furiouses, and Mario Karts could not have prepared me for this game. The only drawback is not being able to turn off the ability to knock cars out of the way that are headed in the same direction as you. It would be nice to have this option just to add a little more challenge to the game at times, but it in no way takes away from the fun of the game. You will still crash and it will still bring a tear to your eye when you do. This game just focuses more on racing and trying to make everything else around you crash!
-Multiple modes of play
-Beautiful Cars
-Crashes and pileups that will bring a tear to your eye
-Multiple types of takedowns including the Revenge Takedown and Takedown from Above
-SPEED that will have your eyeballs screaming for moisture
-Shortcuts that arent the same ol drive through the woods
-Scenery and detail that will give you whiplash
-Earthtones and blacks that provide the game with a sense of "heat" really adding to the rush of travelling at high speeds
If you're still reading this review instead of going out and getting this game, you're missing out!! Whats wrong with you???

Great Great Game! So, here is a different take on reviewing this game. I know everyone else loves the racing of the Burnout series, and surely this is some of the best racing on any platform. However, for me, the absolute best thing about the Burnout series is the crash mode. INCREDIBLE! It is hard to put into words why it is so much fun to drive as fast as you possibly can into a crowded intersection to see just how much monetary destruction you can cause. It's like primordial fun. Your inner beast gets to come out in the form of plowing through semi trucks cars and minivans. Plus, every time you complete a crash intersection, you unlock another. Each crash is different, each intersection is different. Eventually you'll get to harder to crash intersections and the crash mode becomes somewhat of an addicting puzzler, trying to figure out how to get the gold. Each crash intersection takes about 1 minute to complete lending this mode of the game to the perfect portable title.
Bottom Line: Is it fun? Yes. If you like completely destroying cars and you don't mind using a little brainpower to do it, or if you just want the best racer anywhere, get this game. Will I keep it? It can be played forever. Is it for kids? Extremely violent car crashes with no people involved. My kids can't get enough of it.
Just go out and get it already, 9.5/10

At first the games overall feel will seem a little frustrating and thats because you might be coming off of Burnout 3 which doesn't neccesarily play different but feels different. Revenge just takes a few minutes to get used to, especially now since you can harpoon traffic at your leisure.
My only gripe is that the menu options for single player is now just WORLD TOUR and i cant access a sub menu for Crash, Racing, Time Racing, or my favorite, Road Rage. Instead, single players can only play world tour events (from what i can gather in my 2 hours of playing) whereas the coop or multiplayer menu will allow users to jump into crash or road rage without cycling through world tour to find it.
The action however is INTENSE and the racing has never been better. The games other new approach to the series (besides hitting the same direction traffic) is air. Revenge is now so fricking AIRBORNE and jump crazy its unbelievable. The course layout allows you to make alternate routes that result in hang time air, and a new takedown called "threat from above" or something allows you to land on cars!!! yep, and i have done this a few times, so it isnt hard, just plain fun.
While it isnt a vaste improvement over Burnout 3 (hell Burnout 3 was fricking ingenious and perfetc in my taste) Burnout Revenge does manage to capture my heart in the same way. Don't be fooled by any negative criticism, because i read at either IGN.com or gamespot.com that the abilty to crash into traffic without you yourself crashing is not the greatest, BUT IT IS!!!
IGN said something like "the Burnout series captivated people with its intense speed and break neck action of zig zagging through traffic with intensity level dropping the moment you hit a car doing 200 mph; and that this fear of crashing made the racing really intense." And while thats true, Revenge's main focus is more on road rage level than a racing level. And thats why it differs from Burnout 3, so keep 3 handy when you want that exhilirating rush (but remember crashing is still very possible in Revenge; I crash more into walls and turns and pillars in Revenge due to the incredible course layout rather than traffic).
Different...which can be good or bad.

I LOVED Burnout 3. So when I heard that they were making Burnout Revenge I was extremely excited. After months of anticipation I finally got a chance to play BR hoping it would bring the same hours of vehicular mayhem as Burnout 3. It turned out that what BR offered was a few changes for the better and a few that I don't really like. First I'll talk about the good stuff. The graphics are beautiful! I didn't think they could do much better than B3 but they have. They tracks are insanely complicated with shortcuts and alternate paths everywhere. This really makes it so that the tracks never get too old because you can always find new ways to drive. The crash junctions are also incredibly laid out. Most of them require catching huge air and landing in or near a busy intersection. Most of them also have two or three different levels of highway so when you explode you can manuver your car to fall on the unsuspecting drivers below.
The new traffic checking feature gives kind of mixed results for me. On the one hand it is great to plow into a van from behind and send it flying into your opponent but on the other hand it kind of takes away from the twitch racing where you had to be on your gaurd and have quick reflexes. When the subtitle to BR is Battle Racing Ignited you can tell its going to focus more on the battling aspect. I think that the traffic checking does just that, giving you yet another way to take our your opponent.
Now for things things I'm not too crazy about. You can't do a single event like in B3. Some days I just wanna come home and take out my agression with some road rage but now I have to go into the world tour and find a road rage event instead of simply choosing a single event from the title screen. Thats just a little frustrating and something I can learn to deal with. Next is the differences in crash mode. The starting meter isn't that bad and you get used to it after a while. But crash mode just isn't as fun as it was in B3. I think the main reason for that is because the cars seem like they are a lot heavier. In B3 it was great to see cars flying all over the place when you hit them. In BR once you hit a few they just kind of run into the back of the car in front of them and maybe explode once in a while. The ablility to use multiple crashbreakers is cool but having to power them up by rapidly tapping the R2 takes away the ability to time it just right so you can blow up a huge pile of cars. I wish I could just take the junctions from BR and put them in B3. That would be perfect.
Just a few other minor complaints. I read that the cars are supposed to be more breakable in BR, meaning that it has more ways of showing damage. In B3 one of the greatest things was watching your mangled opponent get left behind in the dust after you've taken him out. In BR, however, the cars don't really look all that damaged when you take them out.
I know it looks as if I've said more negative things than bad ones, but I just figured you could read other reviews to see how great this game is. I just thought I would give my opinion on some of the "not as cool" aspects. Now don't get me wrong...BR is a great game and would be a great addition to your collection if you were a fan of B3 or even if you're new to the series. There are tons of great things that EA has done to make it better, but some of the changes, I think, leave me wanting to go back and play B3 instead (thus the reason for only 4 stars)
Rocks - just get it

BR has a gold and brownish tinge to it that makes it look more realistic than B3. While B3 felt like a crash game with some racing, BR feels more like a racing gaming with some crashing and a lot of aggression. At this level the game is more satisfying than B3 since racing games at their core are about racing. Added this year are hidden pathways and the ability to take out traffic in front of you and send cars and vans flying into other cars. This ability allows you to simply take out your aggression. Tracks are laid out beautifully with the ability to catch air with ramps. Simply put, there is little need for other racing games.
Not as good as Burnout 3

I was introduced to the Burnout series when Burnout 3 was released last fall and was thoroughly addicted to it. When I heard that Revenge was coming out, I was very psyched. And to the game's defense, it doesn't disappoint. Despite my complaints, I've still played the game pretty regularly since I got it back in October. It's fast, fun, and the addition of the Traffic Checking was an excellent idea; this is one upgrade they nailed. Knocking the other cars into your opponents adds a new level of challenge to the game.
Unfortunately, there are some drawbacks here. To start, the lame emo-rock soundtrack is more annoying than before but admittedly that is a minor complaint. My biggest gripe is with the Crash portion of the game. I loved the set up in Burnout 3 but Revenge is extremely frustrating. I don't mind the initial boost at the start however, the cars' love to weave around on their own and without the point multipliers, you don't know exactly where you are supposed to end up crashing to get a high score. The "backtracking" after each attempt (during a retry) is VERY annoying as well, since some of the courses are quite long. That brings me to my 2nd gripe, the load times. I feel like I've sat around waiting to play the game more than I've actually driven the car. There were load times in Burnout 3 but not quite like this! It seems to take forever, and if you get a medal, you are not given the opportunity to retry, which means more load times.
Overall, it's still a fun and addicting game, but I hope they improve the Crash mode next time around and do a massive cut down on loading times. Revenge is worth your $$ but if you haven't played Burnout 3, I'd suggest that one instead (it's cheaper too!)
A worthy follow up to Burnout 3

Burnout 3 was undoubtadly a crowning achievement in the racing genre, and Burnout Revenge proudly carries the torch. Boasting another glossy, bug budget package; Burnout Revenge features pretty much everything veterans of the series would come to expect. There's some improvements to the gameplay here and there (Eliminator is much better here), but for the most part Burnout Revenge plays identical to it's predecessor. Oh yeah, the game looks great too. The cars look great and the various modes of play are still oh so much fun, but for the most part there isn't anything here that we haven't seen before. Burnout 3 was ahead of it's time, and while Burnout Revenge doesn't really do much to improve on a formula that didn't need many improvements to begin with, it's still one of the best racers and driving games you'll find on the PS2 today. Whether you're a longtime fan or newcomer to the series, Burnout Revenge is a treat, and it's worth picking up.
