UOTD - the game that isn't

This game shows wonderful promise as an extension to the original Ultima Online, but it delivers nothing. The game is seriously bugged and cannot be played for more than a few minutes on most common machines even if they meet the specs on the box.

In short, don't waste your money!

Cannot believe they are going to release this to the public as it stands. It looks awful, doesnt go for 5 minutes without crashing, lags horribly even on my 1gig Tbird with 64mb Geforce2 and cable connect. There are going to be a lot of unhappy people who buy this and then have to sit through 30 meg of patches before they can even try to play the game, and then suffer the crashes and lockups those of us in beta are still suffering. This game is not ready for release, be forewarned.

I totally agree with other beta testers. This product is NOT ready to be released yet. It crashes occasionally, and lags terribly. It has good graphics, and nice interface - but it should not be released at this time.

The next step up for UO

I'v been playing since the beta testing, and I am thoroughly impressed with the new look, the new graphics, and the new lands. I did go out and upgrade my graphics card from an ATI 128 to a Creative Wonders Annihilator when I found performance of the client jagged. If you have a good graphics card, this will run well out of the box. The game as released does crash occasionally (like every few hours for me), but so do most other games sold, and I expect Origin to provide patches for every single problem. I took one star off the 5 star rating, because while this is a great improvement, it's a far cry from the canceled UO2 and the Ultima IX engine. Also, I believe the system requirements listed are borderline. If you already play UO, this upgrade is recommended for its graphical beauty, if your machine can take it. If you are a new player, hop on the train now. You will not be disappointed.

The game is fun, and has a wonderful community. I have read the other reviews, and I have to say that I don't have ANY lockup problems with my Pentium 3 700Mhz computer. While this game isn't necessary if you already play the original, it does add a new land, which is always a good thing!

Horrible Disappointment

After playing Ultima Online for over two years - I joined the Beta Test of this game. They are releasing the game well before it is ready. There are memory leaks, the grahics are horrible and it is laggy as a game can get. Unfortunately, a once great game has been "corporatized" and is dying. I would suggest not purchasing this game as the flaws are too numerous to list. UO is "hoping" to patch this "gold CD" after you buy it. Check the UO.com message boards for more information on how the customers feel.

Third Dawn is a great addition to UO

Having beta tested this game (and all of the other UO's) I have to say that I had a great experience with it on a somewhat average machine (P3 700, 128RAM, GeForce 2 MX). Ultima Online is the most in depth, vibrant MMORPG out there today and Third Dawn only enhances that world. The new spell effects, new monsters, and addition of the new lands make this a very worthwhile upgrade. I've had more fun playing while using the `zoom' feature than I've had paying UO in a long time, as that is where you get to really take advantage of the graphic enhancements. All in all, this is a great addition to an already great game.

While this game still needs patches, as is more and more common now a days, it is a solid platform. Do not expect a complete game but dont take the sour grapes of many Beta testers too seriously.

The 3D graphics used upon release of the beta are years behind other titles shipping during this quarter. The whole programming change from the "2D" game, to this one have been on par with 3D programming and art used in games during the age of Quake 1. The client is extremely slow and has some severe crashing problems that have yet to be fixed but seem to be specific to some hardware. The developers refuse to respond to these issues, and have gone so far as to suggest that users update their already state-of-the-art hardware in hopes that it will improve. Customer service has sunk to a new low with this company. Where there used to be consistent responses from the customer service dept. there no longer is. If you report a bug and try to get it fixed, you will be met with stonewalling and the kind of vague non-commital language that is usually reserved for press officers of the President of the USA.

Lastly, the game has been built around the idea that Asia is the place to make the next pot of gold. A rather kindergarten attempt has been made to introduce translation into the normal speach patterns of the game. However, the changes have insulted most english-as-a-second-language users. The translations are not only commical, but in some cases down right insulting. It begs to wonder what resources were put into these translations? Most of them are done on a word for word translation direction with a dictionary. The sort of thing you expect from a first year database programmer, not a 3 year game designed for hundreds of thousands of users around the world.

I would not recommend this product to anyone.

UOTD was released buggy with many problems left unaddressed. There's a HORRIBLE memory leak that locks up most systems after awhile, as a beta tester it would lock crash my computer so hard I had to reboot to recover. The product has potential but was dumped into the stores 4-6 months early. It will take them a year to fix all the problems they're introducting into the game TODAY.

Customer service is so bad that it's almost comical. Technical support consists of: "Go buy a new computer." They've ripped the heart and soul out of the Ultima mythos and replaced it with a cold and sterile 'localized' version that no one understands.

Give this one a miss.
