Downgrade for UO

I was "lucky" enough to beta this "upgrade." The promise of 3D graphics and new lands was very exciting...until I loaded the CD. I got it free, but like at least 90% of UO players, I kept right on using the 2D client. Why? Because the 3D graphics are incredibly ugly compared to the 2D graphics, which included art by a famous fantasy illustrator. The 3D versions which come with this CD look like a 10 year old with a public domain renderer created them. Only the spell effects are acceptable. Everyone I knew who betaed cringed when we heard it it was deemed ready for release. Since then, it has received many patches to improve the speed and to some extent the graphics, but you still won't be happy even after sitting through what I expect will be half an hour of patching. This edition is also out of date already, with the release of Lord Blackthorn's Revenge. Save your money and buy the new version if you are interested in 3D. If you are not interested in 3D, buy the Renaissance edition ... It contains access to almost all the areas and items. The items it lacks you can buy from players who have one of the 3D versions. Another plus if you buy the Blackthorn's Revenge version. It allows you to access the landmass of Ilshenar in 2D. Yes, EA apparently now realizes how terrible a mistake they made with this edition and is backpeddling fast to try and keep their majority of customers who preferred the 2D. The only reason to buy this CD is if you are absolutely sure you will be playing in 3D all the time and you already have multiple 2D accounts. Blackthorn's Revenge requires that you buy a different copy for each account you own to receive all the benefits.

I'v been playing since the beta testing, and I am thoroughly impressed with the new look, the new graphics, and the new lands. I did go out and upgrade my graphics card from an ATI 128 to a Creative Wonders Annihilator when I found performance of the client jagged. If you have a good graphics card, this will run well out of the box. The game as released does crash occasionally (like every few hours for me), but so do most other games sold, and I expect Origin to provide patches for every single problem. I took one star off the 5 star rating, because while this is a great improvement, it's a far cry from the canceled UO2 and the Ultima IX engine. Also, I believe the system requirements listed are borderline. If you already play UO, this upgrade is recommended for its graphical beauty, if your machine can take it. If you are a new player, hop on the train now. You will not be disappointed.

Ok , Third dawn was not the success that i and Origin had thought it would be.
There is so much lag and the learning curve is 1000000 x more than for renasaince. You might be saying BUT BUT its 2 d !!! though asherons call and all other MMORPGS are 3d you get just as much to me it is 3d cause it basically is hehehe Well anyway theres so many problems on my comp( its a pretty good comp) And the gms have so much probs just get rensaince!

The game is fun, and has a wonderful community. I have read the other reviews, and I have to say that I don't have ANY lockup problems with my Pentium 3 700Mhz computer. While this game isn't necessary if you already play the original, it does add a new land, which is always a good thing!
Needs some work, but has great promise!

I have been playing UO for 2 years, since BEFORE the PVP/NON-PVP land split. I also participated in the BETA test for Third Dawn. I beleive that the 3D client can only get better with every patch (yes, it does mean lengthy patches to download). It is a version of a LONG STANDING online role-playing game that has great promise (IF OSI DELIVERS). Be patient, I beleive it will surpass everyones expectations. I also believe it wasn't ready for retail yet.
Great Game To Play

I have been playing UO for about a year now, I started out with Third Dawn. As for the 3d aspect it just about [stinks], and I have more than the minimum requirement, but I play 2d all the time so it doesn't matter to me. If others out there want to get into UO, id recommend buying LBR (Lord Blackthorn's Revenge) just for the simple fact that you are able to access all that 3rd Dawn 3d users can access (illshenar) in 2d without the extreme lag that is encountered with 3d. I myself am getting ready to buy LBR :)
Rough in the box - weekly free patches

Yes, the 3D version is still rough. The 2D version is also included, and still immerses you in the same vibrant UO community.
The developers have a history of adding improvements on a weekly basis, the the game is patched free and seamlessly upon login. Don't let the rough edges fool you, the beta version improved dramatically in the 2 months before it shipped, and future improvements are sure to come. In the meantime, you can look around the Ultima world in 3D, and choose the 2D version for the most speed intensive activities.
Are we playing the same game?

I have maybe the most pathetic system in existence, a P2 350 MHz. And the performance is great, bogging down only a bit when there are a dozen or more players around. I don't crash much either; in fact, I don't think UO3D has crashed on me in over a week. I think most of the reviewers are UO:R users who installed the patch, didn't bother updating their drivers, then played it for two hours. I've been playing the 3D client almost exclusively for a few weeks now. It's faster, more stable, and prettier than the old client.
Now all of that is a comparison. I don't actually think that's the right way to talk about this product at all...
Ultima Online has been the deepest of the MMRPGs. None of the games on the market come even close to that. You can bake bread, hunt monsters without much fear from other players, sew leather tunics, make weapons, enter a guild war, disguise yourself and spy on "enemy" groups, enter faction wars, *choose* to PK or fight PKs...
There's nothing even close. And it kind of saddens me, because I'd love for it to have some real competition.
Third Dawn is a great addition to UO

Having beta tested this game (and all of the other UO's) I have to say that I had a great experience with it on a somewhat average machine (P3 700, 128RAM, GeForce 2 MX). Ultima Online is the most in depth, vibrant MMORPG out there today and Third Dawn only enhances that world. The new spell effects, new monsters, and addition of the new lands make this a very worthwhile upgrade. I've had more fun playing while using the `zoom' feature than I've had paying UO in a long time, as that is where you get to really take advantage of the graphic enhancements. All in all, this is a great addition to an already great game.
A Good Start

While this game still needs patches, as is more and more common now a days, it is a solid platform. Do not expect a complete game but dont take the sour grapes of many Beta testers too seriously.
