The Only First Person Shooter For Me

I never got into first person shooters. Quake left me cold, and maybe I got prejuidiced from there. Ghost Recon is the one that sold me, though, and now I'm a convert.
I did have some technical issues, but that's what I get for not having the right system. I have a dual monitor setup and that plays havoc with installing any game. When the GeForce4 cards come out with support for dual heads, I'm sure my problems will go away. My third rate sound card produces some less than standard results as well. So if your system is not up to date, expect to spend some time with the support web site and tweaking settings. The technical issues are the only reason I didn't give it five stars.
As for game play, it takes some getting used to. It's recon, not front line battle. You want to creep up on the enemy position, and sometimes pop a single shot from your sniper, sometimes set your whole squad into rock and roll. I've only had to resort to run and gun in one mission, the one where they have MG emplacements on the second floor of the bank, and even that one benefitted from some tactical play. One unit in front of the bank pops up, gets everyone looking at the front of the bank, another unit creeps in with supressors until it's time to toss grenades.

TC's Ghost Recon's interface took a little learning, especially after getting used to the interface in Rogue Spear. The Pros of the game are the graphics--just incredible stuff to look at. From the weapons, the Ghillie Suits (excellently made) to the LBE the troopers wear. The missions are quite realistic, and well thought out. Of note are the recticules of the weapons, very well done and the reactions of them when they are fired. The sountrack of the game is unreal. From laying in mud hearing frogs, to hearing the wind howl on a high mountain pass, it was actually the sounds that brought me back to my days as a 90's Long Range Recon member in the Army.
The Cons: The game takes a bit of the resources on your computer. My computer stutters and crashes, and I need an upgrade on my graphics card!! It would be more fun if you could be personally in charge of pciking out the kit (flak vests, weapons, camo suits) of each trooper, as you did in Rogue Spear. The Command Interface is a little clumsy, but once you get the hang of it, it becomes second nature. It would also help if the troopers said more than the same 4 or 5 commands.
Beyond that, a great game to be proud of. I'm wondering what the next few years will bring!!
JUST BUY IT

The only bad thing I can say about it is..... unlike some other games like it, it doesn't give you the idea of being a part of a team because if you die you can't just switch to another player. Other than that its the best Shooter out there. The online gaming is awsome. Better than anything out there.... you may not like it though if you like the Fast pace of Quake3 but if you like real life combat this is the one for you.
Can't beat it

Not perfect, and there have been some silly AI problems, however, overall this is the best I have ever played. It is extremely challenging and fun. I have played Ghost Recon, Desert Seige, and Island Thunder, but I still like the original Ghost Recon better than DS or IT.
When you play awhile and see what your men are capable of doing, and not doing, then you can plan a relatively good mission. You just have to know when to switch to another man on the other team at the critical moment, and then back again, and how to position and task your men while you do this.
The Quick Mission option is great and allows you to get a better experience in my opinion. The fun you will have with this game FAR outweigh the few technical issues you may have to deal with.
I play the PC version and like it 10 times better than a game system. I always play with headphones because the sounds are much more realistic, and this also blocks out local noise as well. I paid about $35 for it 3 or 4 years ago, and if I broke it or lost it, I would pay $100 w/o hesitation to replace it.
For the cost of a few movie rentals, you will get more fun from this game than you can get anywhere else for the same money.
So much potential lost

I've had Ghost Recon on and off of my hard drive since it first came out. I keep reinstalling it, perhaps thinking maybe the friendly AI have gotten smarter.
The graphics are top notch....but the friendly AI prove very frustrating. I've yet to pick up on what is so "realistic" about this game, as you're supposedly leading a Special Forces unit that has members that act as if they're straight out of the School of Infantry. They will not provide a base of fire when the target(s) are practically right in front of them, so you can forget about planning even the most rudimentary of offensive actions.
Waypoint finding is at times laughable, at other times, you will want to shoot your squad members yourself, or thrill at their getting wasted for being so dumb. Try to get them to clear a small house.
No in-game weapon view, but simply a reticle on your HUD. In multiplayer games, this can prove deadly as you try to remain concealed, but your position is given away by a protruding barrel. No type of support for the squad machineguns (M249, M240, etc.). Though a vastly different game, I love Day of Defeat for its allowing the player, as a machinegunner, to use his weapon more effectively by deploying the machineguns bipod. For all its "realism", why was this important feature left out.
Close, but no Cigar

When ghost recon came out they said Tom Clancy was going for a more tactical type game. I immediately invisioned myself leading a big, maybe even huge, team of soldiers. Instead I got a game pretty much like the old, and originally fun but now boring, Rainbow Six games. It's exactly like Rainbow six escept outdoors and with less soldiers and less choice of equipment. You have three teams. Alpha team can have 3 soldiers on it, Bravo 2, and Charlie only 1. Making it very like the Rainbow Six games except worse. The good points are the good graphics of the soldiers however. Thier guns are very well put together graphicaly, and the suits for the snipers have nice camoflauge aspects to them. The scenery is rather nice too, very realistic are the trees and bushes and sound effects and such. However, putting on night vision turns the scenery a bit too game-like. It falls short in terms of weapon realism too. There is no kick (Recoil) for any of the weapons, making it very much like a poorly designed FPS game. The scenarios are nicely designed. with realistic objectives and good maps. However with the small team you have these maps are more of a curse then a blessing. Multiplayer on these maps is much, MUCH, more fun. Another thing I wish they'd implemented was the ability to play as a regular soldier. Not having to command anyone or anything, just to follow along with the mission plan. Having to monitor everyone and move them along with you took a big fun factor out of the game. The Firefight single mission types and such did keep the game going for me when I got bored of the regular campaign though.
Upside:
Good scenery, player models, and gun graphics. Several different single player game types. Good mulitplayer action.
Downside:
Not too realistic, no recoil with weapons etc.
Can only take six soldiers max on a mission. Always the leader, can't ever be a grunt. Limited equipment selection.

Dear family
I'm fully aware on how each and every one of you objected to me joining the military, but I wanted to "See the world" and protect my country (For security reasons, i'll refer to myself as ghost 325). I've joined up with an elite group of army soldiers called, "The ghosts" Some of the hardest troop's you'll ever meet. They're the best of the best. They have the highest training and access to some cool weapons.
After becoming a squad commander, I was sent with my men to Europe, where communist nutheads were uprising and attempting to revive the old communist state (But i'm sure you know about that, it's been all over the headlines back home). My men and I were the spearhead of the militaries operations. We were sent on missions that ranged from capturing a general, to blowing up a bridge to rescuing some of our fellow soldiers from a prisoner of war camp. In this military, everything feels new and exciting. After we finished a mission, my boys and I could hardly wait to go out on the next one. My personal enthusiasm was very high.
Our foes are a lot more cunning then those paintball match opponents that I fought with back home. They're really smart and fighting them can be a nerve racking experience. They often fire at us before we even see them, causing us to hit the dirt and scramble to find out where they are. It's dangerous, because unlike in vide games, all it takes is one (or at the max, three) bullets to kill a man. That keeps us alert and weary at all times. Our foes try to flank us, keep us pinned down with heavy fire. Luckily, they are not totally smart. If we keep still they often come cautiously walking out to try and find us, making them easy to kill. Or we send our sniper to outflank and kill them (So much fun). Luckily, my friends in the ghosts are life savers. They often fire at bad guys I dont even notice and often cut them down quickly. I can count on these guys to back me up in combat. They do get a bit stuck on doors and stairs sometimes (must be the beer we sometimes drink after missions), and at times they act so stupid that I literaly have to take control of them to get something done. But in the end I'd be mincemeat withought them. And to back it up, we get to shoot some mighty powerful guns, like the m-16, the M203 and the incredible anti-tank rocket launcher. All of them sound exactly like they should, not like the sound bits in video games back home.
When they say that you see the world in the military, they were right. We've been everywhere from lovely little villiages, murky swamps and even the heart of Moscow. Everything is so awesome to look at, and the forests are beautiful. Sometimes i've found myself simply gawking at the scenery rather then focusing on a mission.
All in all, a career with the ghosts is quite exciting. Every mission is different, the degree of job difficulty is just right, and our campaign against the reds was quite long, and we have the option to have fun in quick mission mode, a new simulator that the military cooked up. I'm looking forward to see where my travels with the Ghosts will take me.
Your son,
Ghost #325

I have all the rainbow six games, and I think this is a stumbling attempt to create a battlefiel war game. I think it was stupid of Ubi and Red Storm to put somthing this pitiful out there with operation flashpoint out... Its good if you like the rainbow six series, but if you want somthing a little better, go for operation flashpoint.

As an average gamer, I want to have fun, be entertained, and feel like I'm making some progress. If you're like me, don't buy this game. I think all of the positive reviews are from people who value realism over fun. First, it's tedious and boring. You have to skulk around and save all the time because at any minute, a shot could ring out and you're dead. The field is really big and it takes a long time to cover it and kill the bad guys. While this is brutally realistic, for me, it's boring. I bought this to have fun. Second, it doesn't look good. Again, it's painfully realistic. It's in olive drab and brown. Last, the interface to control your team is a pain in the _ss. I only played this for about an hour and sold it to a friend. Bottom line, if you like to skulk around a huge drab field for hours, buy it. If you like more action, an easier game, and less realism, don't touch this one.
