Good - could have been better

This program really uses your computer up - so make sure you have a fast processor and adequate video and system memory before considering purchase. I have a 1.2ghz AMD with a 32mb video card and Ghost Recon only runs in the lowest video settings.

Gameplay is really great. For those of you that played Rouge Spear everything will be very familiar to you in this game as far as controls and interface are concerned. The maps are pretty big, and the enemies have really good AI programs. They are probably twice as 'smart' as in Rouge Spear.

One thing I didn't like is the taking away of the detailed mission planning capabilities. In Rouge Spear you could plan it down to the smallest detail - orchestrating your forces. In Ghost Recon it is a much more simple interface - the planning can only be basic.

Buy this game if you have a fast computer and like a somewhat more intelligent shooter game than the average gore fests.

The Best Tom Clancy Game Ever Produced!

In a sentance, "THIS GAME ROCKS!". If you are a person who love's first person PC games or someone who has played the Rainbow Six series, you definitely owe it to yourself to at least try the demo of this game ... . I have played the Rainbow Six series and they were all enjoyable and entertaining, but this takes the best parts of that series and amplifies them ten-fold!! I am playing on a menial system, a PII, 400 MMX system with only 192 MB of RAM and a GForce 2 MX 400 PCI card, but it still looks and plays great!!! It does need a lot of system resource available, but you don't need a super-system to run it. I can't wait until the mission pack comes out soon, although, I can't help but be disappointed a little as the mission pack is only 8 single player missions compared to the full 15 in the game. I am a bit spoiled, but after the pure fun I experienced while playing the game, it is a little hard not to. If you want overly true-to-life strategizing, then buy a Rainbow Six product or perhaps Operation:Flashpoint. If you want straight out-of-the-box fun and beautiful graphics, buy this game!!! You will be glad you did!

Don't be fooled

This is my favorite fps to date, and will probably stay that way for a while. Don't think I haven't played recent games either, I have played most recent first person shooters, like mohaa, command and conquer renegade, and Serious sam 2, and this game blows them all away, especially if you like realism. The adding of the quicksave from previous Rainbow games was a must, as missions take much longer than those of Rainbow 6 and Rogue spear. Also, the maps are much larger than Rogue Spear maps, they can be up to 400x400 meters. Also, like previous Tom Clancy games, the game is extremely realistic, as you can take only 1-3 shots before you're dead (quuuuuiiiiiiite unlike Medal of Honor Allied Assault, where you can take up to 10 shots), and the weapon models are very accurately represented, and a description of how the weapon is used by the army is included. The people who have problems with the AI either play the game way too much and don't quicksave enough, so they get really mad when they make a mistake, or are playing on the easiest difficulty setting. The process of a mission for the first time is very tense (if you don't just quicksave and rush in to see where enemies are), especially on the larger maps because a shot could ring out, and one of your men could die, and you don't even know where the enemy is (this is not problematic though). The graphics are first rate; I have even found myself staring at the character models during a mission to see if my man had a hook nose or not. The sound is even better, and if you have ever heard one of these guns before, you might recognize the sound from the bullets. I personally love unlocking the specialists just to see what new weapons I will get and what kinds of different close they will have. One improvement over Rainbow 6 and Rogue spear is that you don't want to tell your people where to go at the start of a mission, and you can cancel a waypoint, allowing you to respond to a situation if you become caught in a firefight and lose a man or two (although you will probably just quickload unless you are testing yourself). I did notice one awkward thing, if you quicksave, and just after that an enemy pops out of the forest, and one your men is killed, you can just quickload and let the scene play out again, and the man who died will usually live. After all of this I just cannot refrain from giving this game 5 stars, and if you buy it, you won't be able to either.

Solid Game -- Highly Recommended!!

(Note: This review is based on the Xbox version, but I have not included any Xbox-specific features.)

Ghost Recon is a welcome break from death match, you-must-be-on-speed-to-keep-up type games. Instead of pulling a trigger and running around until you kill someone, this game forces you to develop detailed strategies to accomplish your tasks. The action you do encounter (and there is plenty) is intensified by the fact the stakes are much higher -- a couple of bullets or a well-placed grenade takes you out of the game. This forces you to develop a properly planned and well executed course of action.

The game is squad based. During single player mode, you play one of six soldiers and can switch between them at any time. Your player leads one squad of three, and you set a course of action for the other squad which is controlled by AI. As you complete missions and tasks, you unlock addition items such as new soldiers to choose from. Surviving missions also increases soldier skill.

Ghost Recon has significant replay value. It has 15 levels and 50 different tasks to complete, but because there are so many strategies that can be used to complete a level, they can be played numerous times with the same enjoyment level. Of course, on-line play adds tremendous replay and excitement.

In my opinion, the mark of a good game is how quickly time slips by while you are playing. Time after time I have intended to wrap up in 10 minutes only to find that an hour has passed. This is a fantastic game.

I do have a few complaints. The graphics are generally good, but can be on the choppy side at times. I have also experienced instances where the AI squad didn't do what I had mapped out. But, for the most part, the game is a welcome addition to my game library.

Excellent so far

Just played the demo for the past few days and I absolutely love it. If you are a fan of the rogue spear/ rainbow 6 series you have to get this game!
That's it, short and sweet.

Ghost Recon IS first person squad combat

This is a first person character building game. Graphics are good. The trade off for just good graphics is the amount of them. Sounds are realistic. Your squad acts like a team (AI is somewhat realistic). You, as the commander of the squad, lead one team and command the others (up to 6 but normaly 3 teams). Your men cover you and eachother. The opposition is fierce, have patience or you and your team are kibble (ex. After strafing a room and taking cover, any opposition left will pepper the area to keep you down; toss granades to wipe you out; and attempt to flank/ surround you to finnish you off). You can switch between squad members depending on how you feel; Go sniper for the ranged patience istakill; Go Rifleman to be a shooter with flair; or be the Heavy gunner for bullet throwing fun! Most of it is one shot, one kill on both sides(I like this feature). If you succeed a misson with none of your team in a shallow grave, its an awsome feat!

Downers:

You need a beefy computer to get the full effect. You, as team leader can kill your team easily by moving to a cover spot ((you are covered and they don't take cover)not that big of a downer, but frustrating). Cannot drive vehicles.

Over all a great game, hours of gut wrenching fun! - Redwind

Ghost Recon is Great

Red Storm and Tom Clancy have again come out with a sure winner. Ghost Recon combines the addictive gameplay of the Rainbow Six series into a military campaign that no one can pass up. With the computer AI almost human, you're guaranteed a challenge. The multiplayer is also great. One of the key things that make this game seem so much better than the R6's is that there is no planning period before your missions. You have to work on your own instincts to get your team to all the objectives and keep them alive. However they are by far not a burden. These guys can take care of themselves, and you at the same time. You can put support troops, complete with 200 round machine guns to cover, while you get your sniper set up to take out the enemy's advancing manuevers. All in all, a really good game. You should enjoy it for the multiplayer just as much as the single player too.q

I agree with Mark Lahren, but .....

I completely agree with Mark, (side note: Awesome review Mark) However, If you are an experienced Rainbow Six/ Rogue Spear (RS) fan, You will quickly find out that this game is COMPLETELY different. Not that it is a bad game, just different. Once I learned the basics of how the AI reacted, the game was fun. At first, I was expecting the same reaction as the AI in RS and I was killed many, many times, LOL. I just want those RS fans to know this is a great game, but don't expect it to be the next generation RS (at least I hope not). It's on a different level. More of a, can you outsmart the AI, type thing. Personally, I'll stick with RS because I love the multiplayer games. The Ghost Recon mutiplayer just doesn't give me the same feeling of, "WHAT WAS THAT?".

Love the game!

Being a fan of the Rainbow series, I was expecting "another installment." To my surprise, Ghost Recon is dramatically different, as well as quite simple to play. I really like the in-mission planning as opposed to pre-mission planning. Also the fact that you can not only switch "fireteams," but also individual characters. The graphics are beyond compare (which is a Red Storm trademark), with realistic enemy reactions to getting shot to the swaying trees and uniforms that get soaked when you go through water or rain.. The AI is much better than Rogue Spear, with the enemy try and sneak up on you by dodging behind trees, and hiding if your sniper "misses" them. The gameplay is smooth, and the levels are enormous outdoor locations as opposed to the mostly indoor Rainbow Six and Rogue Spear. Blowing things up with the anti-tank launcher is cool, but I personally prefer the sniper, sneaking around in bushes and taking out the enemy w/o them knowing where you are. I am currently running the game on a PIII 600 mHz, with a 16 MB graphics card, and I have no problems running GR with the highest detail settings. I am also running it on a celeron 1.2 GHz, with a 8 MB graphics card, with the settings to medium with no problems. (Networking this game has been one of the greatest experiences since Unreal Tournament). If you like squad based action games, this one will leave you on the edge of your seat right from the beginning. Fans of the R6 series as well as newbies will thoroughly enjoy Ghost Recon.
