the perfect game!

When my father bought a new computer Fate happened to be one of the free trial games on it. Well, i thought it looked interesting enough and i liked the fact you get a faithful pet sidekick (i own a Jack Russell Terrier) and gave it a whirl. SIX HOURS later i still couldn't stop playing!! The world created within is utterly fascinating and a whole lot of fun. I don't play computer games often so this is new for me. The graphics are absolutely beautiful, the movement and action is smooth and fascinating (especially when casting spells!) Choose your own character and build him or her to be a warrior or magician or BOTH. Gather objects to keep or sell and gain experience points as you complete tasks for the villagers. The more points you have the more awesome things you can do. Gain a reputation, earn money and buy armor and spells to be a force to be reckoned with. This is a simple game to play even if you've never done RPG before. It's not bloody or graphic like some action games and your pet can't die! (feed him health potions to keep him healthy) Go fishing and catch totally crazy things (like i pulled a sword and helm out of a fish!) There really isn't anything else to say except this is a game that is completely worth it at any age. Go buy it already!

Get yourself a soda...it's gonna be a long night!

This game has it all: hundreds of weapons, armor, monsters, a pet who can change into some of the monsters, quests, great 3d graphics, and very easy to get into gameplay. No wonder this was the 2005 game of the year runner up! Oh, and did I mention MODS!!! You can make your own or get them from their site.

A fun time

I picked this up recently because I needed something that didn't require lots of RAM or a strong Graphics card. It's always better to play it on a stronger computer but you can play it on many older rigs.

I was immediately impressed by it. Great graphics, pretty good fight controls (point and click to attack), the gore factor is a big ZERO which I feel is fine in this case, the tasks/quests are pretty straight forward and easy to understand.

The only bad thing to say is that it gets repeatative. "Please go to dungeon level 3 and find my morningstar that was taken by a troll named scruffy and return it to me for a reward." (These are not the real names from the game. They are more professional in the game)
Next Quest, "Please go to Dungeon level 5 and stop a group af red jelly monsters form threatening our town"
his goes on again and again. The monsters just get stronger and bigger.

Your pet companion is a cute idea that was very much like THE BARDS TALE. You have a Yorkshire Terrier or a Cat as a companion. When you go fishing, you can catch fish to feed to the pet which, in turn, turn it into a stronger, bigger pet. Most fish transformations last 2-3 minutes on the dog/cat but I found one that turned my dog into a large spider permanently. (or until you feed it a different fish)

The stronger your character becomes, the better the items become that are available from merchants in town.

It's a great game that is fun for everyone if you don't mind a little similar quests.

Diablo 1 revisited...

Are you one of those gamers that remembers Diablo the First? Remember delving into the dungoen to kill The Butcher and King Leoric? Remember the massive hordes of acid-spitters and skelly archers? If you are one of those people, you will LOVE this game. The developer did not hide the fact that he made this game in the image of the Diablo games. He was, and is, quite proud of that fact. He took a great game, worked out the kinks, modernized it, and called it Fate. It is very much similar... In fact, he now works with the guys that left Blizzard to form their own company.

In Fate, you create a character, male or female, and choose a pet, cat or dog. (And it is a Jack Russell or Parson's Terrier, not a Yorkie...) You start with a small amout of gold, and one main quest, randomly generated (as per the original Diablo charm). This quest cannot be fulfilled until you are strong enough to reach about the 45-50th level of the dungeon. Meanwhile, you spend your time leveling up, buying items, searching for treasure, and fighting random unique or champion monsters (with sometimes *very* amusing names). The weapons/armor system and the character progression system is pretty much identical to the one used in Diablo 1 & 2, though with some important improvements. The character skills used are more reminiscent of Diablo II.

The controls are very easy to get accustomed to, and the game system is smooth and beautifly rendered.

One really cool addition to the game is the fishing option. You buy a fishing pole, and can use it in any randonly generated fishing hole in the dungeon. Even a level 1 character can pull high-level items, making it very nice for re-selling for cash to buy lower-level equipment. On top of that, the fish that you catch are used to transform your pet into various forms, such as basilisks and gryphons.

As mentioned in previous reviews, there are mods available for this game, built by other users, to enhance the game. (It really could use some imaginative and experienced modders, though.) There is a mod manager to assist with installing and using these mods as well.

All in all, this game is well worth the money for anyone that loved the Diablo games. I would highly reccommend downloading the free trial first, just to see if you like it. Do a search for Fate, and you will find the site... I am a very picky RPG gamer, and this satisfies both my old-style game hunger and my new-age game desires. Hey, there's a free trial, so why not give it a shot?

Happy slaughtering!

P.S. Did I mention that once you complete the main quest, you can retire your character, hand down one item to your progeny (with enhanced stats) and continue your legacy? Or, you can continue battling eternally, since there are an infinite number of dungeon levels in Fate? Yes... infinite. I can't imagine playing at Dungeon level 300, much less 300,000...

The game includes a pet. You can choose a cat or a dog. This pet performs errands for you and fights enemies for you. You can feed your pet fish which transforms it into a more powerful entity for a short period of time.

Fun premise....

The demo is making me rethink a purchase, mostly because of the kiddie graphics and top down only view. I give it four stars because it is entertaining, but it's doubtful I'd play this for very long--and I really enjoy RPGs like Gothic 2 or Vampire Bloodlines.

My son got this game as a demo on the computer he got for CHRISTmas. He liked it so much he had to buy the program right away. Great role playing, multi level, great characters. We could not find it at the local stores (Wal Mart, Circuit City etc) so we ordered it online. It was cheaper than unlocking it but certainly not faster. We had to wait almost a week. If I had it to do over again I would have just unlocked the program and bought the back up disk for a couple more dollars.

This game has given my daughter and I hours of fun. She is having a hard time getting up for school the next day because of it. The only down fall is that I wish you could use a game pad controller instead of the keyboard. Other than that, the game is very exciting and draws you in.

I love the fact that there are limitless levels and you can go back over and over to raise your levels. That you can pick between male and female characters and whither you have a cat or dog companion is a great perk.
