Totally Bogus

This game is not realistic at all. It is the worst war game I have ever played and I consider it to be a total rip-off. It is extremely doubtful that the US military uses anything remotely like this for training as is claimed. There is very little strategy, you are extremely limited in what you can build, which means your opponent is following the same strat you are. For example, you can only build one large bomber (realistically called a "carpet bomber" in the game) so you can't experiment with differing air power strats, nor could I build more than one airfield. This game is little more than a poor copy of Warcraft or Starcraft but is not nearly as much fun, as challenging, or even as realistic (Real Bad considering those two are fantasy and science fiction).

Good Ideas... poor implementation

... Frankly, this program stinks. I wish I had read the gamespot review before wasting my money on it.

Poor AI engine (troops can't self-navigate around anything)

Poor Strategy (can't coordinate troops)

Poor controls (guys... hot keys to get to HQ would be nice!!!)

and the game play is sporadic (processor speeds up or gets hung on moving some troop around the field)

Don't buy it. Period.

UH, IT SUCKS

If you are expecting an AGE OF EMPIRES that is more modern and up to date... try again. Hell, this is just a one on one stupid who can build their base faster SMARTER game.

It requires no skill level to managing resources (other than power) and absolutely is way too fast (even on slow level) to try and manage your entire army.

Flat out, this game sucks. I bought it at E-Boutique and was very glad cause I could take it back. STAY AWAY. It even didn't install correctly and took me 2 hours to figure out that I have to say "NO" to directx 8.0 install... its not intelligent enough to recognize I have it and skip the install.

IT SUCKS! IT SUCKS! IT SUCKS! IT SUCKS! IT SUCKS! STAY AWAY OR BUY AT OWN RISK.

WAIT FOR EMPIRE EARTH... I have played the demo and that will at that will be well worth the wait.

For those who are seeking a beer and pretzels, blow 'em up computer game, Real War may be for you. For those who purchased the game based on the publisher's claims of being based on "official Joint Chiefs of Staff training game," you are going to be both disappointed and out $40.00. There is no realism in this game at all. Everything is at an abstract scale and gameplay is designed to be perfectly balanced with no consideration given to overall effectiveness of individual weapon systems. Also, as someone else mentioned, you basically just have to outbuild the opponent and then use sacrifical human wave attacks until only one of you is left standing. I did not enjoy it and would not recommend it.

This may be the best game in the world but I wouldn't know. The game would not run on my system (P4 1.7 with 64MB video card and 256MB memory on Window Me) and after contacting tech support via email, I got one suggestion (which didn't work) After that, I have been ignored by their tech support. Take your chances with this one. If it doesn't work properly, you are on your own. Don't count on their tech support!

AWFUL

This would have been a great game, if it had been published in 1997. There is nothing to differentiate Real War from every real time title published in the last 4 years, except perhaps laughable pathfinding and truly witless gameplay. This game is so bad its almost a parody of real time strategy games. Avoid this turkey like leprosy and save your cash for something better. I wish I had.

Probably not what you think

If you think this is a game that even remotely resembles 'Real War', spend your money on something else...even a book would be better than this. How they can actually say that this is based on the official 'Joint Chiefs of Staff' training games is beyond me. If our military uses anything even vaguely similar to this for training exercises, we are in BIG trouble.

However, if you have some extra money to spend and don't mind blowing it on an RTS that is only somewhat decent then Real War might be a game you'll be interested in. There are severe issues that need to be addressed with the game, including AI and balance issues. If you can overlook these issues and still want a game that has units from the real world in it, then go ahead and spend the cash.

To be honest, there are plenty of other games, RTS and wargames, that offer so much more than what this game is advertised as. It's just unfortunate that they can actually advertise this game to be exactly what it is not. Just viewed as just an RTS game, this one isn't even a good one.

REAL POOR: Buy World War III: Black Gold instead!

Don't let the cover and ads for this game fool you, Real War is really poor as real time strategy (RTS) games go. Even though it is advertised as being based on a Joint Chiefs of Staff training game, Simon and Schuster Interactive has put out a highly inaccurate game with poor replay value. The most intriguing part of this game is its storyline, an all-too current battle of America versus terrorists. That's where the comparison stops. Unlike the Al-Qaeda, the Real War's evil-doer's, Independent Liberation Army, have access to Tomahawk missile launching Cruisers, Attack Aircraft Carriers, and seemingly limitless ground assets of moderate complexity.
The saving grace for this game is its interface. It is easy to zoom in and out to keep track of you units. This game is best enjoyed by your seven-year old nephew who does not have a grasp of the destuctiveness of modern weapons. Case in pont, it is entertaining watching an infantry unit sprint Carl Lewis-like in the open past a Light Armored Vehicle (LAV) with .50 caliber machine firing away. The infantryman will typically last 20-30 seconds. Moreover, tanks blast away at each other often sustaining more than three or four direct hits before there armor gives way. Lastly, a missile from a cruiser will hit a helicopter or plane and do only moderate damage. The weapons effects are higly innacurate and remove all doubt as to the overall quality of this game.
Sadly, Red Alert is still the most accurate game at combining joint land, sea, and air units. However, if you wish for an incredible game of ground combat, without infantry, your best bet is JoWood's excellent production World War III: Black Gold.

What a waste

This is the worst war game ever.
"War" for the Atari 2600 was better.
Don't waste your money.
I have to give it one star. But zero would be a better rating.

I only wish I had read the reviews for this game before I wasted $40 on it. This game is laughable. Sure, the cinematic clips are awesome...but if you want a war movie, go and rent a DVD. From a GAMING standpoint, this 'Real' War game is a joke.

Good luck with the 4th Campaign mission called 'Allied Shield'. It is much too difficult of a mission, and hearing the Full Metal Jacket drill sargeant mock you after each failed attempt, you'll be left mocking yourself for purchasing this disgrace of a game.

I will never buy a game by S&S Interactive again.
