This is one of the most average games I've seen in a long time.
After I downloaded the patches and changed my virtual memory settings, most of my problems were solved. The storyline could use some work...there are few side quests, and the main plot gets lost when you're hacking and slashing your way through the dungeons.
I haven't used a lot of the magical spells. Fireball and lightning bolt, even after my mages advanced in skill level, are still the ones I use the most...but they aren't as effective once you're surrounded, then chain lightning is the only way to go, unless you want all of your party members killed off by friendly fire.
There isn't a lot of need for the other ones. There are far too many low-level monsters in the dungeons, until you reach the catacombs. Beating up on orcs and skeletons gets kind of dull after a while. There just aren't enough rewards for gaining experience, it seems. I played table top AD&D in college (2nd edition), and I remember levelling a lot more often.
I liked the music and the graphics. I haven't seen any better graphics in PC computer games lately. But the 3rd edition rules definitely need to be updated, if they haven't been already.
Also, the maps need work. I have played other games where after you find a location, you can click on it and walk there automatically. Wandering through dungeons because you, not your characters, can't recall where an exit or room is wastes time that could be spent doing other things in the game.
If you truly are hard up for cash, then don't waste your money on this game. It's expensive for what you actually get.
An amazing letdown

I'll start off by saying, I do enjoy rpgs alot, at least I used to, recently the pickins have been to many and to drab. This is another example of a game that could have been good, but is too much of a let down.
It reminds me of a game I picked up awhile back, forgot the name, but on the back it said it was a 'Diablo like' game. It was in really big letters, and I was jonesing for Diablo 2 which at the time hadn't been released. Get it home, and put it in, and its a turn based strategy game.... Yeah, Diablo like my foot.
I describe Pool of Radiance: RoMD like this, a very slow Baldur's Gate. My main problem is that the game plays very slow. Second, multiplayer seems to be a huge joke, where DOES the multiplayer take up at, and does it have a story at all? Third...well, the Third Edition rules.
This is my first contact with them, and I was really hyped to see them at work, since some friends of mine want to convert some of our all time favorite campaigns over to NeverwinterNights. After this game, we may skip NeverwinterNights altogether.... To put it lightly...why in the heck is the Mage's spells based off of Charisma, can anyone explain this?
All in all, the game is a let down, its nothing more than a really cheap rip off of Baldur's Gate, yet turn based with the characters being so big that you can't see very much of the map at the time. The upswing is that it is all 'seemless' in the fact that you don't have 'zones' per say, the areas can be very large in scale, so it makes exploring more interesting.
Final word, if you like playing with the 3rd edition rules, and can stand very slow game play, then nab it, because all in all, it actually is like sitting down and playing it pen and paper style, taking turns with initiative. The bugs are pretty bad in spots, but hopefully they will fix them soon. Beyond those kind of ppl, buy it at your own risk....
simply the best!!!

this games is simply the best despite it's problems with crashes if you don't have a decent system or UPGRADES!!!
i wish more games would be turn based like this one, they could be so much better, you know what each player can do and have them do it, unlike balders gate, or icewinfdale 1 or 2 where they all are going at once and can't keep track of them.
i hope more come out like pool of radiance, i hope they do a part 2 and do it the same way.. if you like to take your time and play you will love this game..

For long time fans of the series of this game, people may be slightly dissapointed. Althought the graphics are flawless, and the options are great, actually playing the game can be frustrating. It has a very good story line, however, you'll find that you'll quickly tire of taking 5 minutes for every battle, and that moving your party long distances can be extremely irritating.
Several bugs are present, so do not play without downloading the patch, or all your work will be lost at the most critical of times.
Other than that, the interface is nice, spells are done nicely, and multi-play works flawlessly (depending on your connection).
Am I missing something?

Ok first I will say I am playing it on a very good computer so that may be part of the problem others are having. For me the game installed perfectly with no need to download patches. So far I have not encountered a single bug. In game the graphics are very good much better then most other titles. I am not very far into the game but I have noticed there is very little party interaction, but I do like the combat system. It is very different from the Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale system so it may take players a few days to get used to. This is not a great game but it is by no means terrible and so far I have enjoyed the time in game.
Great Game!

I purchased this game a couple of weeks ago and am almost finished with it. The jerky movements that the other review/s have described is due to not having enough RAM(random access memory) to support the gameplay because, I installed it on my little brother's PC which has very little RAM and he has complained about the same thing. This was easily rectified though I simply installed more RAM on his PC and he now has 256 megs or RAM and the game runs smooth on his cpu. I on the other hand have a great computer with 1 gig of RAM and a really good video card so it has ran smooth for me since installation. However, the game is limited in its originality and the "hack-n-slash" style gets to be repeticious. All in all I would say it is a great game to own. I would recommend that you not purchase this if you want games only like baldur's gate, dungeon seige, and the like. The battle system does take some adjustment but is very easy to learn.
Enjoyable, if not exceptional

This game has gotten a lot of bad press. A lot. I don't even know where to begin describing how much undue criticism Pool of Radiance has received, but I would advise anybody out there not to believe all the hype.
Don't get me wrong--this software won't be redefining any genres. However, aside from a couple of bugs that should be fixed before the week is out, it still manages to solidly provide an experience not dissimilar from that you'd find in the original SSI games.
This game isn't for everybody, either. In particular, there will be a sizeable population of the Baldur's Gate and Diablo crowds that will find the play interminably slow. That's to be expected--this game isn't targeted at this audience. What Pool of Radiance DOES provide, however, is a solid dungeon crawl and one of the better attempts at turn-based combat in recent memory.
I haven't encountered a single bug in thirty plus hours of playing, so I won't bother commenting on that particular complaint, but I would think that the effects (i.e. "It ate my Windows") some people are using as an excuse to throw around labels like "virus" are mostly fabrications or stories heard from a guy who heard what happened to some other guy. Generally speaking, if you don't run any programs that will interrupt the install or uninstall process, you'll be fine.
So, is the game enjoyable? Well, that really depends. If you're looking for a brain-dead exercise in mouse clicking (and keep in mind that I like Diablo, myself) or an expansive story, you're not going to find that here. However, folks who remember the old gold box games, or people who are just looking for a game that roughly approximates sitting around the table with your friends (as opposed to the console feel that a great many CRPGs are adopting), this is where you want to be.
Ignore the bad reviews!!

I dont know what everyone is complaining about. i love this game. graphics rock, sound is cool, new 3E DND rocks, i love the gameplay. only two downsides ive found. both minor. one- tehre is no gnome, whats with this? 2- sometimes tehre is this invisible bar through the screen that makes my guys invisible in that line, but this is bein fixed by the patch i think. i say, GO GET THIS GAME NOW. if you like dnd, this game is for you. tehre is even a DM. if you are looking for a diablo esque clone, this is not for you. if you liked BG, well then i dunno, i loved Bg and i love this too. so id say find a demo or soemthing. but I LOVED IT!!!

I`m dissapointd in this game. When I purchased this so-called game, I expected the type of game play of Nintendo with all the new rules, classes and different beginnings. What I got was problems. Jumpy gameplay and occasional sound from NPC`s, and what is with the waiting after attacks. I know you are allowed to move after attacks but if you move the enemies automatically hit for double damage and when they move sometimes you don`t even get an attack. Also I`m still waiting to use the characters I have kept from Nintendo. I hope they do a much better job in the future or I`ll keep my money in my pocket.
Great D&D Game!

I love this game - it's much better (in my opinion) than the Baldur's Gate seriers and is much more like playing real D&D.
Don't believe the bad reviews - it's a ton of fun & also challenging - you have to develop your characters & experience is gradual, just like in real D&D.
