A real waste of money

I love the Infinity Engine RPGs like Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale, and yes, I used to play AD&D on paper. This game was VERY disappointing. Graphics are OK, but playability is awful. Control functions are not intuitive at all... combat is slow and dreadfully frustrating. I have not experienced the bugs people complain of, but that's probably because I only played it an hour or two before quitting.
Very Few Redeeming Qualities

Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor was, unfortunately, a somewhat disappointing game. Tales continually fly left and right of one bug after another, some so serious that some people's entire operating systems were damaged or destroyed by various installation and uninstallation glitches, as well as many other minor to severe problems.
Looking past the bugs, though, still reveals a lackluster game. Very few elements of the game were implemented satisfactorily, and none of them were character creation. People familiar wtih AD&D will most likely be at least a little bit saddened to find that they cannot play as bards, wizards (only the sorceror kit is available), or druids, as well as having the entire race of gnome closed to them.
People unfamiliar with traditional AD&D, though, will still find that every cleric tends to look like every other cleric, just as every fighter tends to look like every other fighter and so on--characters simply aren't given enough variance to look or feel distinct, which will suck a lot of the joy out of this game for those players who delight in party creation.
In gameplay, Pool of Radiance continues to prove sub-par. For most of the game, there is very little variety in monster encounters. Most of the game will be spent fighting orcs, skeletons, and zombies. One fight looks and feels like another very quickly.
Furthermore, character advancement and plot development is so painstakingly slow that most players will probably feel like they are getting nowhere after hours of gameply. A new element of the plot or a character level-up probably happens an average of once per 5 to 7 hours of gameply.
The character development is aided somewhat by the generous amount of fair to very nice treasure scattered about. You may not gain a level after 4 hours of gameplay, but you'll almost certainly find a new toy to give to one of your characters. As would be expected, though, most treasure is not suited to your party, and unfortunately the money obtained from selling them is almost meaningless in this game--shops are few and far between and hold very few items worth buying.
Pool of Radiance is not without its pros, though. The battle system--while sometimes repetetive in content, is well thought-out and developed. A battle is like a well-played game of chess, and with plenty of time available to consider one's moves and how much risk to take. Graphically, the spell animations are some of the best around in an AD&D game, although the backgrounds in the game are somewhat monotone, very repetetive, and quite uncreative and uninspired. Expect to see a lot of drab, brown hallways.
It is true that this game may well appeal to some gamers who understand patience and can see it through to the end. Combat will be enjoyable to the select few who have the patience to see the many repetetive and time-consuming fights through to the tactical masterpieces that lie between them.
All things said, though, this game is not truly recommendable. Your money would likely be better spent elsewhere.
A nice paperweight!

Actually it's not that heavy, so it's not a good paperweight.
0 stars! I think everyone else summed up most the flaws pretty well.

The anticipation of this game was too great. It does lack in some areas quite badly. I was hoping it would bring D&D to life and in that respect, it has failed. Most of all, I was looking forward to the online gameplay, but I've become a bit disappointed. It's not terrible to play, however, if you're not sure of buying...you may wait until the price comes down on this one.

This game is horrible. It wouldn't install on my computer because they wrote the installer to only install on your C drive. When I tried to uninstall the game, windows was corrupted and I had to reinstall windows from scratch.
DO NOT BUY THIS GAME.
Also, the tech support for the game is horrible. Don't trust anything coming from UBI soft.
Don't waste 50 bucks like I did!!

Ok, Ive played most rpgs out there (many good many bad), I have to say, this one stunk. I played the orrigional once and it was more enjoyable. Pool of Radiance: RMD is nothing more than an excruiatingly dull dungeon crawl. The graphics are ok, but then they arent everything. The game got a little sticky during battles (running on a 1.8 gig pentium 4 processor) even after I defragmented my hard drive. If you want to spend some money on a good rpg, then buy Arcanum or one of the Bauldr's Gate games. Don't waist it here. *tosses Pool of Raiance on top of a copy of "Jurassic Park: Tresspasser"*
TOTALLY HORRIFIC WASTE OF MONEY

WOW! I wasted my money on this piece when it first came out. I just bought it because it was a D & D RPG and I remember the old PoR (Yes, I am an old man). I am so glad that everyone (or most people) agree with me. This game sucks especially because the gameplay is SLOOOOW!

Don't buy this game if all you are looking for is another Baldur's Gate or Icewind Dale. It isn't supposed to be like those games. It is similar to the original PoR. The action is slow, but you need to carefully think about the battles and strategize.
The graphics are awesome...HUGE improvement over the original. The interfaces take some getting used to, but they're pretty nice . They don't cover up the graphics. I'm not done yet, but I haven't seen any bugs, glitches, etc. and I'm not on any sort of ubercomputer.
Overall, it's a very fun game, just don't buy it with any expectations of what it was supposed to be. Very few things ever live up to their hype.

What a letdown!
I love all of the old SSI D&D games, but this is terrible
I thought I might look up this game's review since my party is stuck!
I should have read all of the bad reviews before I bought this
Special Note, Ubisoft produced or created(or whatever) this game, and another piece of dung called Battle Realms(just as buggy, no patches)
I think Ubisoft just churms out games before they are ready
GREAT GAME

The graphics for this game are a bit out-dated now, but this is still a GREAT GAME. I n fact, it is by far the best RPG game I have ever played. Now for the bad news, the game is agonizing UNLESS you download the three pathces from the Ubisoft website. Without these, the game cannot be completed. Additionally, the game is prone to crash at random intervals, so save often. If you can deal with the occasional crash, and you download the patches this is a must-play and very, very addictive! It is just hard enough to keep you interested but by no means too easy (boring).
