Very Fun and Great Detail

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 16 / 21

My dad bought me this and it was great! The 3d effects and details were spectacular, and the characters looked like the people from the movie. It is kind of short, and I beat it in less than a day, but it followed the book greatly! You could even go to the classes. I think you go to about 5 or 6 of them.

Excellent Graphics aside this is just plain neat!!

I love the game. I bought before it came out. I love Harry Potter and the characters come to life. I've played some RPG games before so had a little clue as to get to different things. It took me forever to figure out the stupid flying and yes Malfoy and the rememberall. You have to use the direction keys on keyboard then when you sort of get close enough that you sort of hook onto him and his power is down half way, then use your mouse right click and you bump his rear off his broomstick. (NOTHING FEELS BETTER AFTER BEING STUCK THERE.) :) Later on when you have to run from the troll, run fast, keep running and eventually you'll get past him. I don't have the hand-eye cordination I once had, so it's harder for me. Oh and when you get to troll fighting get behind him and then cast the spells. (...)

Only For Die-Hard Fans (or Kids)

I like Harry Potter just as much as the next big HP-lifestyle-fan. So when my sister came home from the market one day and said "I got the Harry Potter game!" I was mega-excited. I've read all four books and seen the movie. I loved the books, and I thought the movie was pretty good. Obviously, then, the game was simply the next logical step. So I installed it (all 435MB's of it) on my computer, kept the CD in, and started the game...

The first thing that strikes you is the look of the game. The main menu is very well done up, but lacks much content. However, that doesn't really matter to me in a game, so I simply configured the options I wanted (a standard practice for every new game) and started a new game.

The graphics are pretty appalling in this day and age of graphics-cards with CPU's and multi-gigahertz monstrous CPU's chomping the numbers. Most of the characters' faces and clothing look very 2D. Also, quite a few of the graphics do not match much with the movie or pre-game illustrations.

The voice acting is, at best, tolerable, and at worst, appalling. Again, most of the voices do not match with the movie. The voice actors are not very good, unfortunately.

And now, on to the interface. The interface for learning spells is quite good, IMHO. The only problem is that if you have an even slightly below-average sensitivity mouse, you will lose a lot of points because of that. The system for casting spells is quite good, except that you have to aim it very carefully.

The items could have been much more numerous. And I don't really see the point of the beans, except to give to Fred and George. The game manual says, "Collect the beans to trade with other students". Well, sorry, but "other students" only means Fred and George.

Save points are a very old and annoying addition to gameplay. It simply means that you can only save your game at particular locations during the game, that too in only one file.

Now, the gameplay. Some of the puzzles start extremely easy, then suddenly get impossible. There is too much jumping involved. Also, some of the puzzles are very stupid in concept.

The flying lessons are fun (my top score is 15/20) and it's almost worth buying the game for the part where you have to knock Malfoy off his broom.

Oh yeah, two miscellaneous problems with the game:
1 -- Harry himself never talks in the game.
2 -- Hermione and Ron do not help much.

Finally, one last complaint is that the storyline has been given too many little twists here and there.

To sum it all up, if this did not bear the "Harry Potter" name, I would give it 3.5 on 5. However, since it *does* bear the name "Harry Potter", I give 1.5 on 5.

Don't buy this unless you're a die-hard Harry Potter fan.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone: The Game

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 9 / 9

1. Graphics

This game has the most beautiful graphics I have ver seen in a game, besides realMyst, that is. Unfourtunately, it plays choppily if you set the graphics too high.

2. Characters

They are true to the movie and are fun to meet. They don't move their mouths, but they have a wide variety of hand motions. You even meet minor characters like Crabbe and Goyle, Neville, Madam Hooch, Flitwick, Filch, Nearly Headless Nick, The Bloody Baron, and Peeves.

3. Magic

You learn five spells, each one having a slightly smaller variety of uses then the last one.

First, you learn Flipendo, which knocks things over and harms opponents. It has a wide variety of uses, like flipping switches and retreiving beans.
Next, you learn Alohomora, which is useful, because it unlocks secret areas and doors. It isn't quite as useful as Flipendo.
Then, you learn Wingardium Leviosa, which is beleive it or not is ONLY used for floating blocks on top of pressure pads. That's it. The only time it is slightly more interesting is when you have to ove a block on top of a fountain. And yes, blocks are the only thing you levitate.
Shortly after you learn Incendio. This spell is even more rediculous then Wingardium Leviosa usefulness-wise, because it only works on carniverous plants. This is probably because they want those things to be invincible to Flipendo before you learn Incendio. I think you should be ble to learn Petrificus Totalus in its place. I mean, come on, you only use it when the nearby bush turns out to be evil and starts shooting thorns at you. It's called a self-solving dellima. You only learn it to deal with dangers that only come up once you learn it.
The last spell you learn near the end of the game, Lumos. i know what you are thinking, and i tell you, never have i seen a weirder system. I don't hate it as much as Incendio, though, because it is interesting, even if it is not very useful. You cast it on Stone Gargoyles. They come to life and light up an area, at which point a cluster of magical lights will apear somewhere over a chasm or maybe a whole pack of them in a room. Then, you can jump on them like platforms, accessing new areas.

4. Story

The story is true to the books, and you do mot of the things in the movie. Most of the early levels are where you learn a spell and then go through a training area to practice it. Flipendo and Lumos have particularly deadly challenge areas, probably because Quirrel is trying to kill you.

Some levels are added to make the story more playable. to fill in gaps, you often do things like extra quidditch matches and collecting fireseeds for Hagrid.

All in all, a good game. Buy it and feel yourself sucked into it. I mean, can you beleive how many parents like it?

The only gripe I have with it is the spells. Trust me, you'll agree that while Incendio is understandable because it is there to make the game harder, Lumos is downright weird.

LIVES UP TO THE BOOK

I just bought this game today and couldn't stop playing. It is awesome. It's challenging but not too hard and frequent saves prevents you from redoing a lot of gameplay. This game is a must have for all die hard Harry Potter fans. It's like diving into the book and living the Hogwarts experience.

Terrific game!

This is just a great game. Simple, clean graphics. Good adherence to the book, and cohesive with the film. Not that any of that matters too much, but it does help. If you are a Potter fan, you'll likely enjoy this game very much.

Cheers!

Harry Potter game...fun but challenging for young children

This game has good graphics, sound quality, and controls to customize viewing. It is fun and draws you in to discover all the wonders and strangeness of Hogwarts School with Fred and George Weasley guiding you through the "secret passages" in the castle. As Harry, you explore, attend classes, practice your magic, meet with friends Hermione and Ron, and try and thwart Malfoy. It is a challenging game for younger children because of the control needed to master certain sections of the game. My child is a little younger than the recommended age of 8 and he did get frustrated with the game in a few places. It your child is younger than 8, you will need to stay close to help him/her past the more difficult spots of the game. Don't be surprised if you have a hard time too, yes, I admit it....it's challenging even for adults. However, I will gladly admit that it's fun for adults too.

Great transition from the book.

i just got this game today and beat it in four hours. its a great game with awesome graphics just a little bit short. The quidditch tournament mode is awesome and adds a lot of replay value. This game never slows down, i wish i had had some free time to explore around the castle a bit but you always had to go somewhere or do something. the Unreal engine serves this game very well....i didn't have any problems with the camera angles it always made sure you could see where you were going and your surroundings. i also wish there were a few more spells or if they had made it more of an RPG. The game stayed very close to the story line which was a major plus they just had to change a few things to make it all fit in to the game. its kinda hard to control the broomstick but once you learn how to control it a little better it makes playing quidditch so much fun, i wish they would have made it possible to play somebody other than the seeker or just been able to watch a gamefrom the stands! bu ti have to say this is a great game so if you are thinking about buying it, don't think twice, the only reason why i gave it only four stars is because its short and you don't have much free time to do whatever you want.

great for younger children

Pro:
Fun game play
Challenging at times
You get to beat up Peeves and Malfoy
You are the Seeker for the Gryffindor Quidditch House Team
You are able to unlock many of the secrets of Hogwarts

Snape gets- (opps... I almost gave it away, this dosen't happen in the book and it is hillarious)\
You can collect Wizard cards, and Bertie Botts Every Flavor Beans (yummy)

Con:
TOO SHORT
Voldemort was a pain ... to kill
The graphics could be better

I loved this game, and I have played it over and over and over again. If you like Harry Potter, and can live with the cons for this game, then you should definetly get it
