hard, but a really fun expansion

In this expansion pack for the original Half Life entitled Opposing Force, you play as Corporal Adrian Shephard. You and your fellow US Marines (Hazardous Environment Combat Unit division) are sent to the Black Mesa Research Facility. Before you are given your objective, however, your plane is shot down and you are forced to fight for your life. As you venture throughout Black Mesa, it is revealed to you that your HECU unit was to kill any one within the facility and cover up the incident that had occured.

Its a first person shooter, and its a fun one at that. You acquire many different types of guns like the SAW, knife, shotgun, MP5, rocket launcher, wrench, grenades & satchels, a portable Barnicle, sniper rifle, some sort of alien grenade launcher, and many more. Each weapon is equalyl satisfying to fire off and the sound effects of each explosion and shot fired is fantastic even by todays standards.

You will be forced to fight a lot of different things through out Opposing Force. This title pits you against things like Black Ops soldiers (which are the HECU's nemeses), Shock Troopers (humanoid-aliens that shoot electrical charges at you), Vortigaunts, these dog-type things that send out shockwaves, these giant walking tad-pole sorta monsters that shoot these poison needles at you, a gigantic worm appropriately named Pit Worm, and many more. Each adversary is fun to fight, and you'll encounter each one numerous times (except the Pit Worm.. he's like a mini-boss).

In this title, you are able to command different groups of HECU soldiers as you progress. Each one carries different weapons, some can heal you, others can get you through locked doors, etc. Anyway, each one is definitley helpful to have when you get into battles. However, their AI is just bad... you'll want them to follow you down a ladder and they will just stand there and do nothing or sometimes even say good bye. Oh well.

The ending to this game was disappointing. You disarm this nuclear bomb that the Black Ops were prepping, and as you walk into the elevator to face the last monster you notice the G-Man re-arming the nuke. Anyway, you fight this huge beasty, kill him, and somehow wind up on a plane with the G-Man. He tells you that he has "a fascination with people who adapt and survive against incredible odds" and has decided to "preserve you for future endeavors." From there, outside the plane, the sky turns into what I imagine is space. The G-Man takes his leave, and keeps you in space... away from harm, and away from doing harm.

Also, this title has a lot of puzzles in it. I'm not a fan of puzzles but others may be.

I highly suggest if you haven't played Opposing Force by now (like me) then you really need to get this title and play through it. Its a lot of fun, and certainly challenging. An 8.5 out of 10.

Everything about this game is well done, it's just that there isn't enough of it. When I got to the end, I was like "What, this is all?" But as long as you know that it's going to be short, it's still a fun play, and has some of the most creative weapons ever devised for any game. Also, I felt that the puzzles were even better than in original Halflife (not that Original's puzzles were bad!). Likewise, the new addition of squad based combat was great, even if there wasn't a lot of it. All in all, a good buy, provided you don't pay too much, and expect that it's going to be short.

This game may not be all that long, but there are a lot of goodies! New people to watch your back, new weapons, and harder aliens. And It's Corpral Sheppard, not Colonel!

I loved "Half Life," and have played it again and again. I suppose that you only realise how far ahead of it's time the game was. It's 7 years old and I recently just played it yet again, and it was just as fun as the first time. When "Opposing Force," was released, however, the Half Life experience just got even better.

In this Expansion pack you play Corporal Adrian Shephard, one of the Special Ops Soldiers sent to clean up Black Mesa and eliminate Gordon Freeman. On your way in however, you are brought down before insertion. You find yourself in the depths of the beseiged facility with little idea of what's going on. Of course you soon learn the terrible truth of your situation and are flung into a hellish world filled with Aliens and Monsters hungry for your blood. But soon enough Black Ops arrive to take over and you become a target for elimination by both humans and aliens alike. The only way to escape and survive is to fight, and it's one hell of a fight...

The reason I say this Expansion Pack is one of the best I have every played is because it's long and, like "Half-Life," very replayable. You also get to command soldiers who you traditionally would've fought and you wield many different and new weapons, both human and alien. The Desert Eagle, Sniper Rifle and S.A.W are some new "real world" weapons that really pack a punch; while the Displacer (Self-Teleporter), Slimeball Gun and Shock Rifle are the new experimental and alien weapons. Each weapon is interesting and fun to use, especially the Shock Rifle. Of course, with new weapons and allies come new enemies. You'll encounter Shock Troopers, Black Ops Snipers, and new forms of Zombies to name but a few. And of course there are new environments to explore and new bosses too, one being the hideous Pitworm that makes those three Dragon things that Gordon fought look like amoebas. An Expansion pack is meant to excite, entertain and enthrall, but most importantly it should EXPAND on the previous game, which is exactly what this game does! 5/5 for attaining the very goal that all Expansion packs should strive for...

If you manage to get "Blue Shift," you'll also be able to play this game with the High Definition Pack, which gives everything a better look and gives the game a greater appeal. The gameplay is as fluid as ever and the action is realistic, fast and furious! 5/5 for gameplay, even today! The graphics are great with the H.D Pack, so the game gets 3/5 for the original content and 4.5/5 for the new H.D Pack.

The sound and backing tracks are wonderful and really add to the atmosphere and ambience of the game. Even today "Half Life" and all of its add-ons have great, clear sound, so it gets yet another solid 5/5.

The Game is just fantastic. It's fun, gripping, interesting, scary, action-packed, gory and graphically pretty impressive. It gets 5/5 overall, or 95% according to my new Percentage system. It's nearly totally flawless. You'll enjoy this game if you're an FPS fan or a "Half Life" fan. In terms of difficulty, it gets 4/5 for the Hard setting, 3/5 for normal and 1/5 for easy, so play it on hard for the maximum challenge! It's a great buy even today and it's pretty darn cheap, so why not buy it then eh?

This is game is much cooler, more fun than Half life. Weapons are good, there are less annoying puzzles, night vision googles are cool, AI is awesome, new and more deadly aliens. Yes the game is shorter than Half Life, but who cares when you are having fun playing it over and over again. You can make 2-3 soldiers work beside your side. Suggest everybody to buy OpFor with BlueShift, you will get high definition pack, which improves graphics and gives new looks to weapons and aliens. A MUST BUY FOR EVERY FPS FAN.

This game is a big rip-off now cuz u can jus get it on steam 4 fr33 if u register a yur copy of half-life. u can also get awsome stuff like counter strike, tfc, codename gordon, and other games 4 fr33.
the game itslf is not as good as half-life, but still demanded as much attention as hl.

dont buy it, just get it 4 fr33, dawg.

major Shephard. Experience Half-Life's Lambda Complex incident all over again through the eyes of major Shephard, part of a squad sent in to contain the chaos that has erupted in the Lambda Research Complex.
First, play Half-Life. Actually, this game won't even run without it so you don't have much of a choice.

Nothing can match Half-Life, but this is a worthy try.

Although significantly shorter, with worse weapon-pacing, a lot less story and a lot of inconsistancy, Opposing Force manages to still satisfy through great gameplay and innovative new aliens.

No game will ever come close to the unmitigated brilliance that was Sierra's 1998 release Half-Life, so expecting a mission pack to come even close may have hurt public opinion for this game. Not helping matters is the fact that for about the same cost you get a far shorter game. Additionally, the weapons are all apprehended too quickly and a lot of the plot (which dissapears all too quickly) meshes with the original game.

In Op4 you are Adrian Shephard, a corporal sent in to eliminate all traces of the debacle at Black Mesa. However, shortly before reaching the LZ your helicopter is shot down by weird creatures and you are separated from your squadmates. The military has realized it's in over its head and pulls back, but you are left behind, trying to stay alive with other remnant forces.
Despite all the negative reasons i have listed above and the anti-climatic, seemingly rushed ending, this is still a very fun game. It keeps some weapons and adds innovative new ones. It keeps almost all the old aliens and adds brilliant new ones, and action sequences that are difficult and entertaining.

I would reccomend that anyone new to the Half-Life family purchase and enjoy the original first, but this is still a worthy game and highly reccomended to any Half-Life devotee. 6.5/10

Great, but not greatest.

This game is truly the greatest add-on for half-life, other than CS. I wasn't too thrilled with being able to play "bob"(blue-shift), but I couldn't wait to play this. The army always bugged the s*** out of me, and I wanted to be them. But it wasn't exactly what I expected. They could have made this 3000 times better if they knew that the problem was going on, not being thrusted into the action like everyone else. I wanted to be able to neutralize the threat, and the facilitators. Not have them be our crutch. and, you dont get good ammo/weapons in the beginning. It's annoying! But I enjoyed this.

A good expansion for Half-Life

This is actually a very good expansion for Half-Life. usually expansions stink, but this one is quite acceptable. Opposing Force takes you back to Black Mesa a one of the US Marines trying to capture Gordon Freeman (play the first half life before purchasing this). There is an extroidanary arsenal of weapons in Opp. Force and challenging new aliens that do more damage. If you liked half-life, then buy this expansion pack cause its really good. I do have one complaint: I cannot play this sucker online! i have a 500mhz Pentium 2 (its old, but still reads the data) and i have cable modem/high speed connection and it says some file differs from a server file! oh well, you can play single player over and over because its so fun and addicting. have fun playing!
