Nothing can match Half-Life, but this is a worthy try.

Although significantly shorter, with worse weapon-pacing, a lot less story and a lot of inconsistancy, Opposing Force manages to still satisfy through great gameplay and innovative new aliens.

No game will ever come close to the unmitigated brilliance that was Sierra's 1998 release Half-Life, so expecting a mission pack to come even close may have hurt public opinion for this game. Not helping matters is the fact that for about the same cost you get a far shorter game. Additionally, the weapons are all apprehended too quickly and a lot of the plot (which dissapears all too quickly) meshes with the original game.

In Op4 you are Adrian Shephard, a corporal sent in to eliminate all traces of the debacle at Black Mesa. However, shortly before reaching the LZ your helicopter is shot down by weird creatures and you are separated from your squadmates. The military has realized it's in over its head and pulls back, but you are left behind, trying to stay alive with other remnant forces.
Despite all the negative reasons i have listed above and the anti-climatic, seemingly rushed ending, this is still a very fun game. It keeps some weapons and adds innovative new ones. It keeps almost all the old aliens and adds brilliant new ones, and action sequences that are difficult and entertaining.

I would reccomend that anyone new to the Half-Life family purchase and enjoy the original first, but this is still a worthy game and highly reccomended to any Half-Life devotee. 6.5/10

Better than the first?

Half-Life:Opposing Force takes place as your charecter being Adrian Sheperd.Arian is a Corporal in the army and is being trained for a mission. That mission leads him back to where Gordan Freeman was,yet not in the same places.During the game you once again see the G-man that just appears somwhere and stands there clamly atching, then walks away.Half-Life:Opposing Force goes to the places Gordan wasn't.You do not fight on Xen anymore, butyou stay back on Earth and experiance what happend while Gordan was gone.As the coporal, you command a squad of soldiers, but you dont just start off with them. You have to find your friends for no apperant reason. And the so called "Improved AI" i found nowhere.During one point in the game you ahve a medic and and enginer.the enginer opens a door and there is a drone gun waiting.Suddenly he runs straight for the drone gun without shooting or anything yelling "We're gonna kick your ass!".At that point he falls down dead because he has just been pumped full of lead.Enemy AI isn't better at all. When you die,and die again, and again ,and again you begin to notice patterns in EVERY move the enemy takes.I got his game for Christmas, and beat it the same day in 4 hours using the meduim difficulty mode. That is how short the game is.Half-life:Oppossing Force isn't a dissapointment though. It's a very good game that should satisfy anyone that like Half-Life.

It's an "OK" sequel

I think it was a very good follow-up to the original Half Life, considering the fact that the game itself is shorter. They did added quite a few "villains/foes" in there, yet they stick to the same story format. There are some familiar faces in there. I didn't like the new Barney though. There were some flaws I noticed when playing the game: the weapons won't respond after jumping off Xen, so I end up saving and reloading the game level, The frames were acting wierd and slow, so I have to download the patch to make that running smooth again. My favorite part is recruiting the soldiers to battle the Black Ops and the alien shock troopers. I would give GearBox 4 stars for creating an enjoyable sequel.

One of the best Expansion packs I've ever played...95%

I loved "Half Life," and have played it again and again. I suppose that you only realise how far ahead of it's time the game was. It's 7 years old and I recently just played it yet again, and it was just as fun as the first time. When "Opposing Force," was released, however, the Half Life experience just got even better.

In this Expansion pack you play Corporal Adrian Shephard, one of the Special Ops Soldiers sent to clean up Black Mesa and eliminate Gordon Freeman. On your way in however, you are brought down before insertion. You find yourself in the depths of the beseiged facility with little idea of what's going on. Of course you soon learn the terrible truth of your situation and are flung into a hellish world filled with Aliens and Monsters hungry for your blood. But soon enough Black Ops arrive to take over and you become a target for elimination by both humans and aliens alike. The only way to escape and survive is to fight, and it's one hell of a fight...

The reason I say this Expansion Pack is one of the best I have every played is because it's long and, like "Half-Life," very replayable. You also get to command soldiers who you traditionally would've fought and you wield many different and new weapons, both human and alien. The Desert Eagle, Sniper Rifle and S.A.W are some new "real world" weapons that really pack a punch; while the Displacer (Self-Teleporter), Slimeball Gun and Shock Rifle are the new experimental and alien weapons. Each weapon is interesting and fun to use, especially the Shock Rifle. Of course, with new weapons and allies come new enemies. You'll encounter Shock Troopers, Black Ops Snipers, and new forms of Zombies to name but a few. And of course there are new environments to explore and new bosses too, one being the hideous Pitworm that makes those three Dragon things that Gordon fought look like amoebas. An Expansion pack is meant to excite, entertain and enthrall, but most importantly it should EXPAND on the previous game, which is exactly what this game does! 5/5 for attaining the very goal that all Expansion packs should strive for...

If you manage to get "Blue Shift," you'll also be able to play this game with the High Definition Pack, which gives everything a better look and gives the game a greater appeal. The gameplay is as fluid as ever and the action is realistic, fast and furious! 5/5 for gameplay, even today! The graphics are great with the H.D Pack, so the game gets 3/5 for the original content and 4.5/5 for the new H.D Pack.

The sound and backing tracks are wonderful and really add to the atmosphere and ambience of the game. Even today "Half Life" and all of its add-ons have great, clear sound, so it gets yet another solid 5/5.

The Game is just fantastic. It's fun, gripping, interesting, scary, action-packed, gory and graphically pretty impressive. It gets 5/5 overall, or 95% according to my new Percentage system. It's nearly totally flawless. You'll enjoy this game if you're an FPS fan or a "Half Life" fan. In terms of difficulty, it gets 4/5 for the Hard setting, 3/5 for normal and 1/5 for easy, so play it on hard for the maximum challenge! It's a great buy even today and it's pretty darn cheap, so why not buy it then eh?

(Please Note: You must have the full retail version of "Half Life" installed on your computer for this game to work)

What can I say that's not already been said?

This game rocks. Even all this time later, I've seen few things to equal Half-Life, and the expansion is just as good. The new weapons are fun, especially the amphibious alien symbiote that fires corrosive vegetables (yes, really), the heavy machine gun (which I nicknamed the Hamburger Gun, because of what it can do to enemies with a few seconds of fire) It's also a great deal more scary than the original. One truly terrifying sequence involves going into pitch black steam tunnels infested with a hive of giant beetle things. You have to rely on your thermal vision goggles to see anything, and because of the short range, you can't see anything of the enemies until they're right on top of you. And that's when the battery runs out....truly terrifying. The "Where's that running noise coming from...." (looks up) moment in the garage is another example. The sense of chaos brought up in the first Half-Life is built on well...you get to see how the confused, brutal multi-way battles between the alien invaders, a new force of cyclopean aliense with symbiotic weaponry, the stranded remains of the military task force and a band of black-clad assassins determined to leave no witnesses progresses to a highly explosive conclusion. (the firefight in the warehouse is nothing short of incredible) Also nice are the little tie-ins with the original. You get to repeat the infamous dam raid from HL, from the other side, relive a twisted version of the "Welcome to Black Mesa" tram ride from the intro to HL and witness Freeman leaving for Xen. Oh, and check out the "Employee of the Month" picture early on in the game.

I could go on for hours, but let me sum it up with this question. If you don't have Half-Life and it's expansion pack, why on earth not? You're missing out on something that's more than a classic. It will be a piece of gaming mythology.

Almost a new game

There are games on the market that release sequels to games, expansion packs and whatnot, and they tend to feed the customer more gametime for the franchise until the next release comes about if any. Opposing Force did just that, as it completed the task of a defined add-on, and then some. It contained new maps, new skins [of guards like barney] and more importantly, a new mission in the view of your enemy: a marine sent in to vacate the Black Mesa facility. Valve knows how to make games, and with 1 full game and an add-on that nearly makes itself a totally new one. Gearbox took the helm for this project, and what a project they made. An EXCELLENT experience. I felt surprised and baffled every corner of the game, remembering areas in the original Half-Life, reminiscing about old moments. The folks at Gearbox even let you take along a few friends, as the engineer, grunt and marine will help you on your escape (not capture of Freeman) of the dreaded facility. Now here's the downfall: it should have contained more things than just a few new maps and more missions as a marine. I finished the game in a couple of weeks, and I stopped right there. They should have included TFC in the pack (I got it before buying the game though). It would have been better though to download the 13 MB application off the CD instead of from the internet. This game, or add-on, to Half-Life is definitely worth your money, not only because of the Half-Life name slapped on it, but because the immersion is incredible, as you will find yourself breathing a marine after you finish the game. I keep thinking about the female assassins that run after you in the game. The Worldcraft program was put into full use; we expected a fantastic game to begin with, and Gearbox delivers. - VULCAN, the LEVELER

A superb expansion pack

This is a goodie for all you half-life fans out there, and is juuust about everything that an expansion pack should be. It's well-priced at 30 bucks. It's a good length, with plenty of levels to keep you going. There are new monsters, great level design as always, and a couple new weapons; the addition of the SAW gives this expansion a whole star in and of itself!

The story is cool, putting you in the shoes of a soldier instead of into Gordon Freeman's shoes. There are plenty of fun instances where you run into a stranded squadron of soldiers and get to fight alongside of them for awhile, though they sure don't last long.

Two good things: First, there are a lot more of those terrifying little black guys that pitter-patter around so frighteningly. Second, those darned boring alien levels are a thing of the past.

It would've been nice if this pack had a little more innovation like the original did, but I'm not going to complain. There is no doubt that Valve is saving all of it's best new tricks for the sequel. And if you really get that anxious, you can always play TeamFortress or Counterstrike for FREE to your heart's content.

For now, single player action lives on in Opposing Force!

If you want a game that is well planned, has great AI, super graphics, and an outstanding story, you will want to by Half-Life's Opposing Force. It is also great for mutiplayer.

For Hardcore HL fans only.

I, myself, thought that the original Half Life was phenomenal. It had a good premise and lots of great effects. Opposing Force is basically a mock-copy of the original Half-life, except for the fact the graphics have gotten worse! I don't know why the grahics aren't as good. My computer ran the original Half-life with perfection.

Fairly good game

This is a really good game, but compared to the original half-life it is only mediocre. The gameplay is still very good and a few things are more realistic, but the story is not half as good. Still, being able to command a team of armed soldiers is very appealing, although they are a bit stupid sometimes. The problem is I was looking forward to killing all those annoying scientists and guards, but instead they help you. This was very disappointing to me. Despite that, it's a very good game and if you liked the original you'll like this one.
