WHAT? That was the last boss?

Half-Life is the coolest game I have ever played. You know, creatures eveywhere, great strategy game, how do I get over there kinda game. Unfortunently when I played Opposing Force I was dissapointed because Half-Life was a long game while Opposing Force was so...well, SHORT! Once I beat the last boss I was so happy thinking, "Wow that was a tuffy! Cant' wait for the next", but then the game ended! I expected it to be a lot better than that! The thing I thought would be awsome in it was that you could lead a "squadron" of grunts and medics and soldiers. The most you ever get to come with you is 3. 3! That's not a squadron. The new guns were cool though. The graphics were good too but thats about it. So if you wanna get a game DON'T get this.
Great new weapons, but a little short

I loved the original, thats what drove me to get Opp. Forces. It was a very good game I must admit, but I think they could have made it a little longer. Most of the weapons were very interesting, rather then 5 weapon classes like in the first, it has 7. It also comes with many new fun filled multiplyer maps that are purfect for anyone who likes a fast paced shootem-up game full of blood and gore. One of my favorite thing about the game was getting to command several different types of really cool marines including medics, ingeneers, grunts and a few other kinds of soldiers. Although the puzzles are somewhat agervating at times I think this game is deffinitly worth the money you pay for it.
Reasonable remake

The gameplay is enjoyable, the puzzles reasonably difficult. However, it's really just a remake of Half-Life, and despite the addition of some new weapons it's basically the same thing over again. The puzzles sometimes seemed too easy, probably because they were familiar.
The original Half-Life broke new ground in the degree of storytelling and craftsmanship in a first-person shooter. This sequel does not. However it is mostly consistently fun to play, so it gets 4/5.
Also, as another reviewer pointed out, given its size, $30 seems a little overpriced.
Just as good

You thought half life was a good game well you have another one right here to hit you in the face. This is another great game. It is just as great as half life. I like the thought that you get to be put on the other side.
Oppose This!

There is some good news and some bad news about Opposing Force. The good news: this is the same great game as the original Half-Life. The bad news: this is the same great game as the original Half-Life. On one hand, kudos to Sierra for putting out one of the greatest games of all times and for expanding upon it so creatively. Now let the modular madness stop. One of the points the original Half-Life proved was that a game was more than just new boards, new monsters, and new guns - it was atmosphere, setting, story, and pace. In Opposing Force you've got more atmosphere, setting, story, and pace than ALL the other shooters out there, except one: the original. Opposing Force is a great game in and of itself, but its no Half-Life.
In this round, you are Alan Shephard, one of the soldiers that invades the Black Mesa facility to "clean things up" and get Gordon Freeman. Clever use of the same Black Mesa spaces and a fun twist to the terrific story used in the original make this expansion pack feel more like a game by itself. In fact, when you consider that this is only an expansion pack, it sets an incredible new precendent for Half-Life 2. Now if only Sierra can step off the packaging up mods band-wagon and create an entirely new game, we'll be in business.
Great but needed more levels

Great but needed more levels and more weapons would not hurt, other than that I thought that it was a good addition to Half-Life, I still think Half Life the first part was much better and exciting than this one, also I thought this one was too easy to finish. Interent game play was not to exciting, I did not like it. Deathmatch was not great, half life deathmatch was much better. The new weapons were really cool, I liked that.
Great new expansion for the price...

I was really looking forward to playing this game, the whole idea of playing a soldier going through the Black Mesa project was a good premace. The game is great, but I felt like it was over too soon. Maybe it was because I'm so familiar with the original Half-Life, I was able to cruise through this. When I got to the end, I was still hungry for more. I then recalled that this is an expansion pack, not a new Half-Life. Oh well. I expect that the Blue Shift expansion will be much like this, and I'm going to buy that when it comes out too.
excellent expansion!

Yep, Half-life was a great game. But with this expansion, it gives you a whole other game! You play as a different person while using a different arsenal of weapons and much more. With a non-confusing way of play it makes you think without getting frustrated. If you liked half-life, you gotta get this one. (For a good deal get blue shift).

Okay, after reading most of the reviews below, I'm going to break my review down into a list of pro points and con points.
Pros:
Excellent new aliens. From the one-eyed chicken-legged Shocktroopers to the bullish lurching sewer creatures, all new alien strains add plenty of much needed variety. There's plenty of them too, offhand I'd say that there's at least eight or so new enemies.
Excellent new weapons. The sniper rifle adds a different slant on the large scale battles and the new alien weapons are great fun (except maybe the barnacle grappling hook.)
The storyline is quite snappy too, with plenty of glimpses of the mysterious suited man and a few secret conversations that you can eavesdrop on.
Usual high standard in terms of the graphics and sound. The alien noises/voices still make me jumpy when you can hear 'em, but they're hiding somewhere (those Shocktroopers sound just like Daleks too!)
Cons:
Some people say that it's too short, but for an add on pack it more than suffices. Clearing it in one sitting was mentioned below too, I'm good at it and played it on and off for a few weeks. However, the end monster and actual ending are both let-downs. The 'final battle' consists of a series of climbing ropes, using mounted laser guns and using your grappling hook over and over (and over) again. More like the Krypton Factor assault course than an pan-dimensional showdown.
Iffy bugs. I have a Pentium 3, Voodoo3 3DFX card and 256 of RAM but the game 'stuttered' and froze plenty of times during music/sound sequences. Sometimes (especially in lifts) you get stuck on the floor and have to reset the game to get out.
I'm not too sure about the AI either. Any friendly troops that you 'lead into battle' either refuse to follow you, charge straight into gunfire or shoot you in the back! Their average life expectancy in battle is about a minute or so. The bad guys aren't really the sharpest tools in the shed either, following basic patterns or causing you grief by being very fast instead of very smart.
I didn't come across any of the epic battles I'd read about and was looking forward to. The largest team of men that I led into the fray was three. Moments into it, all three ran into an upturned container to be gunned down one after the next by a gleeful Shocktrooper.
Like Half Life itself, the majority of the time you're frightened of noises and the dark rather than tonnes of aliens charging at you. The latter more regularly would be welcome, and draw the games out a bit. The best part is the sewer section where one minute you've got a horde of giant half-bull half-spider thingies thundering after you and just when you think you've time for a breather, an infinite amount of scythe-armed flea aliens start spilling from doors.
Ok. So to summerize, Opposing Forces is a very worthy purchase that adds plenty of great features to an already great game. Not very long or particularly hard, but well worth money.
a great addition to the half-life seires!

well, I was impressed with this addition. There were a few new additions like weapons (like the awesome new M249SAW), enemies, a fun story and hardly any puzzles, and you are only in the alien world xen for a split second which I much approve of (I HATED xen in the original half-life) but the last boss was a MAJOR disapointment and WAY too easy. I wont reveal too much here but I can say that you dont really fight the boss but instead you mostly run back and forth while fighting off the creatures he spawns. All in all if you are a die hard half-life fan dont miss out on this and even if you are not a fan, you will probably like this game.
