Wow...Where to start

I must say that this is the best game i have ever played in my life. It seriously blew me over. I'll give an overview of the game for people just checking out reviews for the game...

~~WARNING~~ Small spoilers ahead, mostly on the first one

Storyline: 10/10 This is by far better than any movie or book i have read or seen. Cloud Strife's life turns out to be a big joke, although he said in a long (and relatively boring) flashback that he was a Class A fighter in Soldier. He really is putting himself inhis friend's shoes. Very epic,sometimes almost made me cry.

Characters: 8/10 Wide variety of playable characters here, who you will be using all of eventually. The only disappointment was Cait Sith, who is a big loser and a lousy combatent.

Gameplay: 9/10 WHOAH. There are so many things to do here, and i sometimes spent 4 hours or more playing this game without even realizing it. There were many puzzles and tricks with your fingers, for example when you need to free Tifa from being suffocated by gas in an execution chamber (why, you will soon find out in the game). And when you are finished with around 14 hours worth of gameplay, theres a whole crapload of side quests and stuff.

Graphics/Backgrounds: 7/10 for graphics, 6/10 for backgrounds.
In spite of this being one of the first games for playstation, they did an excellent job on 3-D graphics here. Backgrounds look like paper mache, though :-P

Music: 10/10 Once again, they dish out wonderful music to stay in your head all day. Within the first week i played this, i was humming the reactor music all day long.

Sound: 8/10 Dazzling spell sounds, pushes, pulls, drops, smacks, and so on. I ate this up.

Fighting: 9/10 Turn based combat to keep you on your toes. If you dont move those fingers fast enough, you get hit. I like it. Only annoying part is thereare a few too many random battles, but there are a very wide variety of monsters to fight.

Script: 7/10 Although there are only text boxes, you can tell the emotion going through the voices whenever someone speaks. Another high point.

Controls: 6/10 Takes a little getting used to when played on the PC. Num pad only.

World map: 11/10 Very original world map, instead of a cursor and a bunch of little dots to choose from like in other games, you are an actual character walking around and entering cities. Quite good.

Overall, i love this game. Plenty of things to do, many side things, but dont play it on XP like i did, it messes up near the end and you need to do a whole lot of stuff to get it working again.

~~~~~83/100~~~~~ Drum roll please.........B++!!!!! yes, ++ because it probably deserves an A. I love it, buy it NOW!!!!!!
Great game
Mine's the regular pc version, so some of the problems may be fixed, but the story and gameplay should still be good. I didn't install and play this for a few months after I got it. Once I got enough into the gameplay to get some understanding of the story and characters, I wished I'd started it sooner. Very detailed rooms you could actually see someone living in, nice music, some original minigames. I loved the bike ride one, or maybe just its music. You start in the middle of an attack-in-progress and get story and instructions as you go. Nice dark and more mature theme without being overbearing about it, kind of like Zelda for a slightly older crowd.
Keep in mind that this was the first FF on the PS, and obviously won't be like FFX graphically.
Problems: Badly and cheesily translated in some spots, camera needs some work and can make for hilarious screenshots, and alt-tabbing out causes a flickering bar on the bottom until you go to another walking area. If you use the PS version guide there are some noticeable differences in special item uses and presence of certain things. If you alt-tab out during a movie it will skip the entire FMV, and there are a few good ones you won't want to miss. Will monopolize your midi and wav output while being used - music usually continues at the windows screen (and very loudly) while alt-tabbed out, and hard to kill with ctrl-alt-del on the (very rare) occasion of freezing. These aren't really a problem unless you have a really temperamental system, and some of these may not happen if you're using a 3d card. It didn't stop me from having a great time using Typhoon and KOTR on things.
Advantages as a PC version: Renders very well by software, no 3d card required. I don't have a 3d card yet, it may improve or mess up the graphics. A player of the PS version watched and said it rendered a lot better on pc, faster loading and faster in general. Apparently has some minor story scenes not found in the PS version, though it's possible these players simply never returned to those trigger points. You can view the movie files directly off the disks too, and learn a little about how some of those playing area scenes were put together.
Best feature - lets you save on the equivalent of about 14 save cards, which is good if you have a lot of players or you like having save files dedicated to right before a game event, like the end of disk movies.
For added fun, once you finish the game there are also unofficial save file editors and patches that let you mess with the game a bit at the risk of ruining the changed files.
THE BEST RPG EVER CREATED!!!! SO MUCH FUN!!!!
I love the way they show the battles! Raising chocobos is so fun! The only thing is trying to get a gold chocobo( can go anywhere on the map), it is so hard. You can also race the chocobos you raise at the gold saucer. Great characters(Cloud, Barret, Tifa, Aeris, RedX, Vincent, Cait Sith, Yuffie, and Cid)! There are a lot of sidequests in this game that make this game really fun. I would recommend this game to most gamers. It is worth the price. When I got it for my birthday I didn't know how to play it that well and I didn't think I would like it this much today. Like I said: BEST RPG EVER CREATED!!!!SO MUCH FUN!!!!
This is likely the best game I have ever played. Granted, it's not got the best graphics on the market today, but the gameplay is intense! I've beaten the game several times - and I still have trouble remembering things. Every time I play through, I notice several things. Also, the side quests make this a game for those looking to kill time just playing through - and those enthusiasts who 'have' to have everything. I love absolutely everything about this game, and the series as well.
undisputed
I think most fans of Rpgs and the series agree that this is either the greatest or one of the greatest RPGs ever. In my opinion this is the best game of all time too. If you haven't played it yet, do yourself a favor and get it.
A great game overall
Arguably the best of the Final Fantasy games, FF7 offers some great gameplay and storytelling. Admittably the graphics are not up to par with current expectations, but they aren't actually as bad as some reviews would lead you to believe. The graphics of the characters themselves are fairly primitive, constructed of simple shapes, but this does not usually pose much of a problem except in closeups. The backgrounds and cutscenes however look excellent and are occasionally quite stunning.
The port to PC of this game has a few minor problems. The Disks are mislabeled as 1 through 4, whereas the game will refer to them as the Installation disk plus disks 1-3. In addition, the default controls are somewhat awkward especially on laptops since they use the numpad which requires the use of the Fn button on most notebooks. Unfortunately these default controls must be used to access the ability to change control schemes and also each time you name a character during the game.
Also be wary that this game is not fully compatible with Windows XP, and will crash upon reaching the chocobo races. This compatibility issue is easily fixed however by downloading a patch (just search for "ff7 XP patch").
Despite these few issues this game is still a great buy. The storyline itself is very immersive and I find you spend most of the time progressing through the intricate storyline and new landscapes. Unlike most rpgs, it doesn't just become repetitive or waste your time with mindless leveling up. There are enough twists and variety to make this game very interesting to the casual or hardcore gamer. This is truly a game that defined gaming as we know it today.
Still the best In My Book.
I have played many FF games 2,3,6,7,8 and, X. From all of these 7 still ranks at the top of my list. I guess it was the story and the gameplay. its the only one that attracts me enough to play agian.
It was so good I played for almost 16 hours straight the first day I got it, oh yeah. This is one that must be experienced by all gamers, even if youre not an RPG fan, trust me you will love it.
The Best.
I am actually not a fan of video-games, but this one sucked me right in. For once what everyone says about it is true. Nowadays, the graphics aren't that great (block style) but it adds a certain charm to the game and everything is overshadowed by the amazingly complex storyline and well thought out, fully-fleshed characters.
The battle sequence is of course turn-based, which can be annoying and the constant battles when travelling IS annoying, but you have to level up somehow >^^< and its dealable. I definitely prefer the battle system over some of the newer FF games, though.
If you haven't played many videogames and aren't sure you like them or even if your a hard-time gamer with a love of fantasy and RPG - then you'll love this game! Amazing plot-twists and tons of secrets (you can play this game three times through and theres always something new that you never discovered/noticed).
I personally know many people for whom this was their first video game and they still adore it even today. A game that can keep fans hoping for more for 10 years speaks for itself!
Final Fantasy VII is one of the greatest games of its time. Even today, it remains one of the most fun games to play. One obviously cant compare it to the latest graphics and advances, but even now it keeps a great deal of its charm. It will be remembered as a classic by gamers for years to come. It is the game that brought the Final Fantasy label to stardom among gamers in the U.S. and that led to the greater successes that followed.
