Tiberian Sun: Can it live up to StarCraft?

2 Rating: 2, Useful: 1 / 1
Date: July 05, 2000

The answer is a simple NO! I owned StarCraft and then got Tiberian Sun. Big mistake. A waste of money on my part because the perfect strategy game was already mine! GDI and NOD have so many building exactly the same names and functions with slightly different looks. BORING! StarCraft's three races have all unique units of which can't be built unless playing as that race. Don't be fooled by the graphics, if have $30-50 bucks, get StarCraft instead of Tiberian Sun. If you own StarCraft, use the money on Brood War or whenever it comes out, StarCraft 2.

Pulse racing, slick and compelling

Westwood do it again with another great sequel. This game will be loved by Command and Conquer fans. For those who have never played C&C - if you like simulation or strategy games you should buy this game it is truely best in class. If you have played before it is familiar, but distinctly improved. It is easier to see where your soldiers are heading. The path finding is better so you don't waste time because somthing got stuck. The campaigns are very playable and make sense within the story line. The computer player occassionally acts dumb, but generally offers a worthy opponent. Warning - can keep you up late since you lose track of time.

This Rocks! Very much improvement since the last one!

This is a good game. Onceyou start it, it seems nothing has changed. However, On levels 4 and beyond, you can defintely see the many differences.

Although constant missles can hastle your bases early off you can get defenses to stop them. The computer AI could use some work but in the Multiplay trend most games follow these days it easy to understand why it is under developed. Buy this game it is worth every penney and more!! Actually has infantry sprites, before infantry was not used very much, now it is necesary to have infantry. The game is much more in touch with modern combat than meets the eye. Bottom line super realistic, great graphics killer game play super story...must buy.

Same as the original

Remember Command and Conquer, the real-time strategy that lets you build a base, a lot of units and rush the opposing force? You'd think the developers of the original would come up with some innovative game play for the sequel. While maybe they can, they didn't here. Not only is the game play unchanged, it suffers from a weak story, poor balancing and computer AI and several small problems.

The single player campaign story, what there is of it, is just a jumble of scenarios without much to tie them together. There are characters and things happen to them but but there isn't a story progression to follow. You fight over here, you fight over there, then it's the final battle. In fact I reached the end of the GDI campaign without realizing it. The live video cut-scenes should have helped create a rich back-story but writing this I can't remember any of it.

There are balance issues particularly with NOD units and structures. A NOD 'super laser' structure can destroy almost anything with one shot but the NOD artillery is completely unbalanced. With a long range and a big punch, the artillery is can wipe out any ground force, and is unstoppable even in small numbers as long as a small anti-air backup is nearby.

The computer is an easy opponent. It doesn't rush but sending units at piecemeal, a handful at a time. It doesn't protect it's harvesters either, once you locate them it's easy to cut-off the computer's resources. The computer showed some initiative just once: During a NOD scenario several GDI engineers rushed my base taking several of my structures. I was so surprised it nearly wiped me out but building a good perimeter stopped later rushes. In the scenarios that followed the engineer rush never happened again. I didn't try any higher difficulty levels, maybe the computer plays better there.

Large maps are hard to manage, the game tell you that an offscreen unit is lost but not where the unit is. Some scenarios seem designed to simply frustrate you with a huge map and a timed objective with no direction as to where to accomplish it. In the end the game is all about the mass rush, once you build 50 or medium strength units nothing the computer can't stop you. On the technical side this game ran perfectly on Windows 2000.

If you're looking for more of the original Command and Conquer this game's for you.

This game is excellent!

I bought this game after borrowing RA2 from a friend and I decided to buy TS because I had played it before and it was really good. It has a rather small display which lacks in detail but is perfect to see what is going on. The units have variety, but GDI and NOD are a bit too similar, for instance both sides have the same type of MCV, but on RA2 they are different. It's just aesthetical. But some units are so [incredibly awsome] that they alone can keep you glued to the screen for hours, trying to devise a strategy to take them out. I find that NOD Banshees or GDI Orca bombers in groups of five or six can be used to take out the enemy MCV, then the other buildings. The NOD Artillery are really good defense and attack if you can afford to support them with Mobile Repair Vehicles and some sort of tank (Buggies do well, but die fast). The Component Tower idea is a bit stupid though. GDI Firestorm Defense is good but annoying and the walls are annoying to build (piece by piece, unlike RA2) and annoying to repair. The in-game movies are a bit disgusting, but the soundtrack is really good. Overall, it is a great game and one of Westwood's best productions.

Tiberian Sun is still the best of the C&C/Red Alert series!

When it comes to single-player (solo) gaming, Tiberian Sun is the best of
the C&C/Red Alert series! Why? Let me count the reasons.

Tiberian Sun missions are the most varied and interesting. It isn't all
about building up a base and destroying the enemy's base. When you play as
a GDI or NOD, you think one side really is superior (I thought GDI was
until I realized NOD had better defensive base capabilities). The units &
vehicles were really ahead of its time when you compare the game to RA or
RA2. And lastly, TS really was harder for me compared to the other series.

When it comes to multi-player (online) gaming, I imagine that TS is the
best to play with too, although I imagine that NOD gets played an
overwhelming amount due to its superior defensive base technologies and
offensive weapons (stealth, artillery, destructive chemical weapons,
lasers, burrowing, etc). The only good thing I can think about GDI is if
someone gets to build too many bombers, then GDI will attrition NOD to
death.

Tiberian Sun kicks!

I have noticed that most people believe that Tiberian Sun is a sequel to C&C: Red Alert. This is not true. Red Alert was written as a PREQUEL to the original C&C and happens during WW2. Tiberian Sun then picks up a little while after where C&C left off. The best twist in the game is that Kain (NOD leader) is back, although the truth about his death in C&C 1 is a little mixed up. The graphics have been improved tremendously, the maps are larger, and new awesome units have been added. The storyline is not as intriguing as the other two C&C games, but it is a good story line also. In my opinion, Tiberian Sun was the best RTS of 1999. If you have the other C&C games, it is a must own. If you don't have the other C&C games, or are debating between Red Alert and Tiberian Sun, BUY THIS ONE!

Children who advance to a certain level in the game are "rewarded" with the ability to view the torture and execution of soldiers. Not animated . . . live action. Although "all the kids have this game", parents ought to think twice about buying/allowing it. And Amazon ought to do a better job of detailing the more questionable qualities of products they sell.
