This game should be called "Rainbow Sucks"

I've never seen a bad review for this game, and that is the reason I bought it. It got consistently good reviews. Well, let me be the one to warn you - this game is absolutely terrible. At least the Nintendo 64 version. It's not that I don't like first-person shooters. Two of my top five favorite games are FPS': Goldeneye and Perfect Dark. It's not that I don't like strategy games. One of my favorite PC games is a strategy game: Starcraft. I can't really sum up easily why Rainbow Six is just an all-around bad experience, but I'll try. I'll start with a general comment. I beat this game on all three difficulty levels in a week and a half and NEVER, not for one single moment, was it fun in even the remotest way. Another thing, the manual and the game do not coincide, for whatever reason. Example: When you are planning a mission, in the manual it says you can set points along the route where your computer controlled players will throw a flashbang or a grenade. Well, in the game, you cannot set a point to throw a flashbang. The option is just not there like it says it is in the manual. This is very bad, because flashbangs are very important. Another thing I don't like about this game is the amount of armor, camoflage, and weapon choices. Sure, there are a ton of choices, but it really matters not what you pick. You can move along just as quickly with the heaviest armor, the heaviest rifle, and the heaviest pistol, and you can move just as quickly as if you had the lightest stuff on, but you will live longer with the heavier armor. Also, the camoflage does NOTHING. You can be in the jungle wearing jungle camo, and the computer enemies act like you have bright neon orange on and an air-raid siren and come to kill you. Also, you have three choices of pistols, all with silenced and unsilenced versions. Well, all three pistols do exactly the same thing, and why would you not want a silenced version! Same goes for the rifles. There are two versions of the venerable M-16 rifle. The M-16 is longer than the CAR-16, but that's it. They are the same gun otherwise. They both have better accuracy at long ranges than the H&K MP5s (which also come in silenced and unsilenced versions for some reason), and both are unsilenced and will make loud noises that gets hostages and you killed. To sum it up, this game has a lot of potential, but is best relegated to the garbage heap due to lots of options, but gives you no real reason to choose a certain weapon over another, or certain camo over another type. It would be much better if you had to worry about some sort of weight limit, or the heavier your equipment you select, the slower your guy moves. Or if camoflage actually did what it was supposed to. I have never actually met someone that liked the N64 version of this game, but for some reason, every online review is a positive one. Well, let me be the one to warn you - Rainbow [is AWFUL]! If you must make a stab at this game regardless of its worthiness as only feed for maggots, RENT at your own risk. If you are buying this game for yourself, save your money. If you are buying it for your kids, save yourself some money and save the kids from crying themselves to sleep over this game.

OVERLY HYPED...

I read the reviews and researched the heck out of this game. The reviews on amazon made me jump at the game because most had given it a high rating. The game can't be found in stores because of how old it is, so I found it here at Amazon (Which I am greatful for Amazon because here you can, for the most part, order hard to find games).... BUT... the game controls are awful, the graphics bite (When moving your character, the foreground and background graphics move as well), there is a map that stays on screen the entire game and you can't get rid of it, story line is weak. The only thing that seemed to be somewhat fun was shooting and having to slowly move upon enemies, doors, etc. I wouldn't recommend this game to anyone.

...This is by far the worst N64 game I have ever played...

Graphics are horrible. Controls are clunky. Sounds are so-so. Dumb map stays onscreen and there is no feature to remove the navigational map which causes distractions. Low replay value, what replay value? I played for about 15 minutes and haven't picked it up since then.

Keep your money and spend it on something else, save yourself from wasting your money and time on this game.

Not Much Challenge-Only 6hrs to finish everything on Elite.

I was extremely disappointed. I expected a more challenging game based on reading all of the reviews. From reading the professional reviews, it became very clear that they were written based on either the instruction booklet (which talked about a lot of neat features that didn't come with the game) or a preview of the game, but not the actual game. I thoroughly enjoyed 007 and would love to see someone create a game in that genre that was better. This is not it.

This one is just too easy even on the most difficult of levels. It only takes 30 minutes per mission to figure out a way to complete it. I completed the entire game on the most difficult level in only six hours. Even use non-use of the gadgets do not affect the game play. Hardly worth $45.00.

I must say that the graphics are good, the concept is good, and even the game play has its good points. Its weaknesses out weigh any strength it may have.

What a let down

I don't know what everyone is raving about. This game is such a let down. From the reviews I thought it would be good, some say better than Golden Eye, but this game doesn't come close.

The controller is poorly configured, the graphics are poor, the whole thing sucks. Don't waste your money.

The PC version reigns supreme

I own the Rainbow 6 PC version and it's an excellent game. Unfortunatly, my computers graphics card, and speed is pure crap. My friend and I then decided to rent it to see how it compared to the PC version. The graphics were very good, and the speed was fast. But the game developers did a very sloppy job creating this game. They just dumped a bunch of levels in the game and all you do is run around, and solve very simple objectives. No storyline whatsoever! No John Brightling or Anne Lang and their evil plot. The sound wasn't half as good as the PC version, it just looped over and over. They had no bio-suits. Only 2 people to a team. You could not go out of 1st person veiw. The graphics were excellent and the speed was exceptional but the cool story that made me like the game in the first place was demolished. The game was just sloppy.

id rather read a clancy novel than play this again

horrible graphics, bad controls, annoying guy in your ear saying "no tangos in site" It took me about 30 minutes to beat on the hard difficulty level. I bought it back when it cost 70 bucks, plus i thought i had to buy a control pack to save a game. You dont need to save a game, because if you cant beat it in one sitting you shouldnt be play video games. Go out and buy a ps2 and play some real games (n64 is dead)

Not as good as other reviews say

I understand why most people gave this game a good review, it deserves it, but perhaps the wrong words were used to make this game sound great. I think you should buy it if you own an N64 knowing this first.
First off where way beyond that generation of video games so no graphic delights.
Secondly althought the gameplay and optional strategy take makes for many ways to complete each level, the game is short. 12 missions in 1-3 days depending on how much you play (thats on level Hard)
Thirdly there are alot of other games that you should consider first, like Turok 2 or Golden Eye, (which Rainbow Six does rank lower than)
Fourthly the replay value is not as bad as others would say but its nothing you'll find yourself wanting to redo over and over again. Turok 2 is one of those games.
But don't be shy of this game, one hit kills (for you that is) makes this a realistic game in most parts. If you have an N64 and don't want to spend 50 dollars on the new and hot games, try this one out it is worth the shot.

Great idea, but slips a bit on execution

I bought this game because of the comparisons made between it and Goldeneye, and it does compare well in many categories. Plus, the added functionality of outfitting your team members with weapons and equipment, planning exactly where they should proceed and when make Rainbow Six a much more strategic game than Goldeneye.

But, these added features bring along with it some drawbacks. First of all, after only owning the game for a few days, I couldn't believe the several glitches I already found. For example, when walking right alongside a huge rock, I somehow 'slipped' inside the rock, and couldn't get out to the playing field to proceed with the mission. Also, a remote team that I had planned to go down a ladder in one mission got stuck on the ladder - couldn't move or shoot and I had to abort the mission.

There are zero movie-style interludes (such as in 007 after you complete a mission), which makes the climax of completing a mission that took 20 minutes to plan and 20 minutes to execute a bit disappointing. Even the end of the game doesn't provide any excitement - just a final snapshot of your capture followed by some text on the screen congratulating you. There are other, smaller bugs that would have made the game more enjoyable, but not worth mentioning.

All in all, the concept of combining this much strategy in a decent first-person 'shooter' environment is unparalleled to date - it definitely entertained for a while. But once you complete the game, it fails to continue to excite, as there's not much more to look forward to. The second day I bought 'Rainbow Six', I'd have easily given it 4 stars - now, after dealing with the glitches and the anticlimactic rewards for finishing missions (and then the game), I can only give it three.
