A flawed masterpiece. Great graphics and sound with a dell p500. Demands a lot from your computer hardware. Fun at first but grows tedious.

This game is good for some things but for others no preety not, this game is to choose between being a bad or a good god some cool things are: 1-Throw the villagers. 2-burn dead people. 3-saving people. and more... But the controls are to hard to do miracles moving the mouse in different ways. This game is good but beware with some bugs and it can contain innadictive portions of black boring skies.

Warning: This game can cause severe drooling...

I really love this game. The graphics are great and the idea of getting to play God is really cool. I've read many of the Amazon reviews that dismiss the game for bugs and such. Well get over it, the patch that's going to fix most of the bugs is supposed to come out tomorrow (Monday June 4, 2001). It lessens the whole village mircromanagement by making the food desire based on actual hunger rather than having food in the store, etc. Iit also lessens the creature's desire to eat people, and it will fix bugs like the level 5 creature curse and the silver scrole quest bug with the blind woman and the potions. I absouletly love playing this game...and I don't even have a computer that will run it yet. I go over to my best friend's house to play, but it is soooo worth it.

So much potential... So much frustration...

As many others have noted, Black & White offers so much; but it is still not without its shortcomings. The graphical look and feel of the game is tremendous. B&W looks beautiful. And the concept of "playing God" opens a number of interesting ethical decisions for the player. In a favorable review on NPR, they mentioned that Beta testers in the USA tended to be a "good" God; while those in Europe were inclined to be "evil." Of course, what wasn't mentioned was if the Beta testers complained about the difficult interface. The "hand of God" is harder to manage than it should be. This makes it a challenge to get where you want to go. Also, the villagers are as insipid as the creature is glorious. The AI that makes the creature learn is the best I have seen anywhere. If only 1/10th of that AI power was used in the villagers. They are the single most annoying feature of the game. All in all, this game can give you hours of enjoyment - if you can look past its shortcomings.

too many bugs.

black and white is a fun game with great graphics which could have done well.the main problem is you buy the game and find you cant play it for all the bugs and glitches.the games support is also poor.there is talk of a patch but i think b/w is gonna be one of those games that will never run as it should no matter how many fix it patches lionhead/ea come up with.i give it about 5 out of ten .but if your computer is not at least double the recommended minimum requirements stay well clear

5 Stars When You First Start Playing It, Dwindles Down to 3

Black & White has been heralded as a masterpiece by many computer game reviewers, but my experience with it was the same as my time playing The Sims. I was flabbergasted at first, but quickly lost interest as the "unique approach" of the game wore off.

The "unique approach" for this game is the training of a creature that you use as your Titan to watch over and convert the worshippers at various villages. The supposed A.I. of the creature becomes simple programming after you figure out how most of the creatures are meant to behave. Furthermore, the storyline, puzzles and sub-plots included are interesting at first and add to the overall experience but these too become tedious as they aren't interesting enough to make the game last.

This game is capable of an online multiplayer versus mode. I never tried it and it seems like a game that is better suited to the stand-alone (the game itself) version rather than a multiplayer matchup as the story is what the programmers used to try and push the game over the hump. It would still be interesting though to play a multiplayer game considering this isn't your typical shoot 'em up or strategy game. Furthermore, explore the internet as there are additional creatures to play that you can download. Also, there are the usual amount of bugs in this game (perhaps more than some first releases) and as I write this review, the patch for the game is only in beta stage. (Being tested. The patch is downloadable at the company's website but there is a disclaimer for it.)

While I liked the game but didn't think it was good enough to be considered a "classic" I can see how many people would thoroughly enjoy this game. Myst meets Warcraft would be my description of this. I would take time reading all the reviews because you can get a good idea if you're the type of gamer that would love this game. Not my cup of tea, but a good game.

Decent...Borrow it

I believe that many people buy this game hoping to have gigantic creatures and raining down hell and throwing villagers around -which can be done- but it is offput by a VERY annoying system of village management...and whenever you want to change your alignment it takes forever to change. As for your creature, It takes hours and hours of playing to make him big enough to really have FUN, and the game is only 5 levels long! It's simply not worth what it costs, despite an appealing show of graphics and humor. Worth trying so that you can have a bit of fun, but by Dune 2000 or Settlers or Citizen Kabuto instead.

Micromanagement instead of Gameplay

I give this game a score of 5 stars for its ingenuity. I can't give it a lower score because I couldn't have conceived of such a splendid idea, yet I"d rather spend my time playing a game instead of living in one. Black and White is a hassle. It is nagging. It is like having too many children, and you know what happens when you have too many. You have to throw fireballs at them and toss boulders, but that doesn't seem to qualm their voices. I'm a patient man, but I"m not mad. I"m not eager to be anxious about teaching someone anything. I"m hardly learned myself. What could I possibly teach a tiger or a bunch of quebbling souls? I bought the game. But I never play it. It just wasn't fun, but it is a masterpiece.

B&W. . .good or evil?

This is an awesome game. You can be good(heal people, do the right thing. . .)or evil(burn villages, throw people. . .which is REALLY fun). And you can also get a giant creature(he/she can be good or evil to). When you're good or evil, your appearance(or basicly your hand)changes, same with your creatures appearance. And, there is a HUGE variety of creatures you can choose from. A horse, ape, cheetah, gorilla, mandrill(baboon), tiger, and, last but not least, the all powerful cow. Overall, this is an excelent game.

Revolutionary Game

This game has captivated me from the beginning, not only because of the eye-popping graphics, but because of the huge numbers of possibilities available inside. I have owned this game for a week, and can barely keep away from it.

It's a God game, in which you take care of followers and cast miracles to fight against other Gods and gain more followers. There are many different events and challenges which you can accomplish in many different ways, whether you want to be good or evil. For instance, in one challenge in the tutorial beginning a women asks you to help her sick brother who has wandered off. In return she offers something that you need which is in her house. You can accomplish this task in many ways, including taking a rock and smashing open her house to take what you want.

One of the most inventive features is that of the creature. You get a pet that you can train to help out and fight other Gods' creatures. Some people have described it as being just a big Tomagochi, but I've never had a Tomagochi get frustrated with me and throw one of my followers out into the ocean before. I've tried out several of the creatures already, including some of the unlocked ones, and each time I've seen a different personality develop. Though the creature can be frusterating, (especially when you have to teach it simple things) in the end it's a very rewarding experience.

Admittedly I had some doubts and dissatisfaction that many of the people who didn't like this game touched upon: at first the game can be really frustrating with controls, micromanagements, etc. However, there are ways around it which you can find posted on boards all over the place, including at bwgame.com. Some may call these cheats, but they reduce the micromanagements frustrations immensely. The controls get much better with time as well.

This game has provided more fun for me than any other game in recent history. I have not noticed any of the bugs that some people have faced, which is probably because I have a brand new Pentium 4 system. For those of you who are worried about it I recommend you wait until they finish and release the patch.
