When I ordered this game, other reviews I had read made me very concerned that it might not run. It turns out that I did have some problems - but not the problems I expected to have. When I ran the game, I got a fatal exception error every time. However, when I went into the setup menu and disabled the sound, the game ran perfectly. Ironically, it was the grpahics, not the sound, that I expected to have the problem with. I don't have a fancy video card, and my computer's hardware lies somewhere between the game's minumum and recommened requirements. Therefore, I feared the graphics might look poor or be choppy, but they're smooth and beautiful. That still leaves me with the sound issue. It looks like I'll need to get a new sound card because my current one isn't DirectX 7.0 compliant. Meanwhile, I'll play with no sound. The game is drop-dead gorgeous to look at. There is a learning curve to using the interface, but it's not nearly as bad as some have made it out to be. Once I get more used to it, I think I'll really be able to act quickly. The graphics and the game's concept make this an amazing experience, which will be even more amazing once I'm able to hear it. Despite the setback I had, I am recommending this game wholeheartedly.

It's not a terrible game, but the micromanagement can make you want to smash the computer. It took 90% of my game time just to satisify those stupid villagers. Getting wood/food, putting wood in workshop, building tons of houses even though there's no need,.... It's very buggy also. I was expecting alot more. Don't trust those reviews from magazines...

You need the latest computer to run this - and then some luck. My Win2000 with Matrox Millenium II (actually a Corona) display, 350 Mhz, SCSI etc, would not run it -- it just dies. The documentation does have a section on what to check when it just dies without an error message (kind of a shame the programmers didn't write an error message for all exit points) - anyway, I pass all the tests -- So, I think EA just figures it's my fault and that's that! It runs on my girlfriend's newer Dell with WinME, so she can play. Just a warning - you need the latest machine and some luck!

...This game should be an AI material for studies! What do you want to do today? Eat people?...Throw rocks all over the world? Small building downs? You'll find those small ones in the first 30 minutes of the game. Wait until you get addicted and play all day and find all the nice (well, and bad) things to do in it!!!
Imagine Populous with The Sims and you might be getting a bit close to this game, but with a huge missing gap. This game is astonishing, I never imagined someone could pull off such thoughtfull AI in a game yet. Plus, it has a good touch of humour!
The other cool thing is that I don't know yet when I will be able to finish this, there are so many bad ways of doing this that I'll never find them all!!!
If you are a gamer, you should already have this game and be stuck playing, not reading this!

From all the reviews that you get to read on this game, written by either Magazines or Web Sites,it would have to be the greatest game of all time, but don't be fooled. This must be some real great marketing department, as what you are getting for you money is a highly bug infested beta of two combined companies where customer support is on the very rock bottom of things-to-do-list. If you would like to save yourself worries and trouble (and money) wait about half a year then buy it for half prive and by then some patches should be available for this game.
WHAT!? A mere 3 star average rating?

Sheesh! Black and White is a great game, deserving much more than an average of 3 stars. I got this really excellent new computer, so of course I needed to begin filling the hard drive with games. I went to the store and was confronted with a huga array of them, and out of all of them I chose Black and White.
First of all, the graphics are truly amazing. You can zoom out to the edge of space, and close enough to see a worm wriggling in an apple. Truly amazing.
Next, the gameplay is superb. Truly immersive and new, not just the boring shoot em up, or build, gather resources, destroy, and "ooh look, ANOTHER side quest to explore!" The creatures are a whole work of art themselves! It brings a whole new meaning to Artificial Intelligence...
So, you still don't believe me? Well, please read PC Gamer, or go to ..., and find out for yourself that I am in fact right about Black and White.
Great start, fizzles quickly

At first glance, Blacka and White looks like the everything-killer. The graphics and sound will crash your jaw through the floor. Creature interaction is wonderfully entertaining and challenging. The story is good and the interface is ingenious.
Unfortunately, this all wears off after about 3 hours. You will soon discover that the game simply isn't fun. You are forced to manage your whiny villagers endlessly and unless you train your creature just right, you will be picking up after it's obnoxious little self for the majority of the time.
All in all; a great start trips on it's own AI-encoded toe and falls crashing to the ground
Lionhead/EA have crappy customer service

The game will not run at all on my computer! I have a fairly new Gateway, and I have never had any trouble with games or other software. I think Black & White has been released prematurely, because I have written to Lionhead/Electronic Arts to no avail. All they do is send a useless reply with a handful of suggestions that do not help. Meanwhile, a game like the Sims runs like a charm. I am obviously no hacker or expert, but I firmly believe that installation of software should be painless. If not user friendly, then one would hope for competent customer service. I am going to return the game as soon as I can get to the post office. If your computer is not new and fresh out of the box, be very careful about buying the game--EA will be of no help to you.
A great concept...

Black and White was a really great game, conceptually. You take the throne of a God and are given a creature as your physical embodiment. You are then charrged with taking care of a village of people, and later in the game, must take control of other villages with the use of impression. By gaining new villages you lessen the power of your rial gods. Easier said than done. I first played BW on my 333 MHz computer. It ran slower than molasses. Then I got a new 2.26 GHz comp. and it ran like the wind. Becuase of the speedy upgrade I was actually able to finish the game which is no small feet. The game has this wonderful good/evil recognition system. it takes your actions and alters your temple to reflect your goodness or evilness. Too bad being evil is about the only option you have. Your peopel have these insanely high demands, and if they're not met, they think you're evil. It's not my fault you cut down EVERY TREE ON THE ISLAND AND I CAN'T GIVE YOU MORE WOOD! And they won
t stop complaining. At first you feel bad about being evil, but after a while you start to purposly set your peopel on fire just to show them how evil you can be. Buy this game for it's sheer novelty. After a while it can get repetitive, frustrating, and down right boring. If the village managment was easier, I would give this game 5 stars.

Well I read a whole load of reviews here stating that the game have more bugs than any game ever made. I don't know about PC version but the Mac version of the game is nearly flawless, never crashed on my iMac and I've been playing it for several months now.
Yes, I agree the villagers are the biggest whiners (now we finally understand God why is that when we ask for something He doesn't respond and so we think He is busy...well may be he is). They can't do anything until pointed by you they will; sometimes I just want to blast them all into the oblivion!!!! They will rather be homeless than actually try and build homes BY THEMSELVES! I can give those instructions on how to do it, it's very simple ;)
Another thing is the manual. It does not tell you what makes you good or evil. I'm trying to do everything good but for everyone in the game I am Lucifer, but my Titan is Archangel (And he thinks I am a good god, smart guy). So what the heck?
Out of 100 I give it 90.
And I HOPE!!! they will improve those things in B&W2.
