OHMYGAWD! This game is sooooo addicting and fun. I feel like a pimply faced teenager again rolling dice in a freind's home long into the summer nights, playing D&D. The RPG concept has been captured so very well in this game. If you are a D&D freak, you will LOVE this game. Black Isle RULES!

This game is worth the money! Even with the fix in level advancement, the game is still more than excellent. The ability to import character portraits and personalized sounds makes it even better. There could have been more interaction with the NPC's, but everything else is solid! Wonderful game!!!

The Beginning

I played this game when it came out, and it astounded me. The flowers, the butterflies, the music, the story, the gameplay, were all astonishing. Baldur's Gate is still one of the greatest games of all time. It works just fine on computers that aren't brand new, and an internet fan base is constantly updating it. I wouldn't recommend this game for anyone under 12 or so; there's some real darkness here. There's also humor and, of course, magic. Like many RPGs (and unlike, say, Doom or Grand Theft Auto), it will appeal to women and girls. Save the world, make friends, find yourself, collect neat stuff, and kick some [tail] --what's not to love?

At Long Last

At long last there is an Advanced Dungeons and Dragons game made for the PC that has the same feel as the tabletop addition. Role Playing gamers have been searching for the holy grail of Dungeons and Dragons for many a year, usually coming up short. Baldur's Gate has all the features of the classic tabletop version, combined with the effects offered by computers! The game starts off by letting you create a character. You can a character of a variety of classes and races. There is also the scenario of rolling for attributes. A click of the mouse simulates the role. Luckily, you may role until you have attributes that are suited for the character you are building. You also have the ability to assign weapons skills and choose the characters alignment. Alignment does factor into the way other Non player characters treat you and the way you should treat others.

After you finish creating your character you are thrust into an involved storyline where your father is killed, so you must adventure to find out why and avoid the same fate. The world you travel is vast. The game includes five compact discs, with the option of purchasing a sixth for expansion. If you have the drive space, a full installation is recommended; otherwise you will be swapping compact discs like swapping floppies in the old days. I love the fact that the playing realm is so big. It allows for travel to many intriguing environments like forests, towns, and keeps. The game play is also remarkably like Dungeons and Dragons. You must stay awake while adventuring, or monster that surprise can and will do serious damage. An advantage with this game is that you can have NPC's join your party (up to 5), and set one of several action scripts that tells them how to react during confrontation. Real time spell casting and fighting makes each battle a challenge in its own right. Experienced role players will appreciate the many choices of weapons and spells available, and know which ones work best tactically. The designers of this game did not miss much authenticity. Another game playing feature I like is the ability act your own free will. Townspeople and others NPC's are not off limits to attack if you do not like them, or just plain evil. Thieves can pick pockets, so stealing is an option. This does not help your reputation, but it can be tempting. Baldur's Gate features a brilliant array of dazzling graphics rendered in 32 bit color and isometric form, if you have a 4MB video card. Each area of the game you explore is a unique adventure into an unknown world. There are many character portraits to choose from, and lots of sites to download additional portraits if you get bored the existing ones. The details of buildings like castles and cabins give detailed craftsmanship. The sounds generated by Baldur's gate are also well put together. One of the more amusing events you will find is the non-playing characters chiming in during you adventure. Characters with different alignments and agendas will bicker with one another, including you! Sound effects like weather events, and birds chirping in the background do a great job of setting the tone. The musical scores match the game fairly well, standard adventure music. The artificial intelligence of the game is above average. Panic is a built in feature that has characters and monsters fleeing when over matched. Other monsters will not run regardless of the odds. Towns people run from you when your reputation stinks, and embrace you when is good. Baldur's Gate is a great adaptation of the classic tabletop game. It has all the features many have craved, and is satisfying in many ways. I must caution players who may think this is Diablo with many updated features. Baldur's Gate is not fast paced at all times like Diablo. If you like slice and dice, Diablo is it. If you like a thought processing adventure, this is you game.

Definitely worth the buy

As far as hours of play versus cost, this game is perfect. There are many different areas of the map to explore, and the storyline is pretty good. You can go on various side-quests, or go in a (relatively) straight line to the bad guy. This game is a little old (I think it came out about 3 years ago), but there are very few problems that I've seen. A background in Dungeons and Dragons isn't necessary, either, so people new to D&D won't get lost.
All in all, I'd say that this is a good game for people who like RPGs, fantasy afficianados, strategists (the battles take a lot of strategy), and people who like character design (something I always get a kick out of). It's definitely worth the money you spend on it, and if you like it, you can continue with your same character in Balder's Gate II (which is also good).

A great game, but....

If you have an older computer, or lack the appropriate computer skills, this is a beast. Even with the patch, it crashes constantly. Everytime I am just starting to get the hang of the controls, it locks up and shuts down, (usually right before I am about to save my progress). The game play itself is amusing, but there is a lot of walking involved, which if your computer is older or slower, can become pretty tedious.

Balder's Gate - fun and replay value

The first time through Balder's Gate was great. The story arc, the sub-plots, the quests, all fantastic. But there were so many options to try, so I started from scratch. And you know, it's still fun. They have loaded this game with so many options and directions that you can go, it's simply amazing how much fun you can have even when you know about the uber-plot. The world is so rich, and what you can do is so varied, this game really rates the tops.

SWEET!

Dude, this game is really, really cool. I bought it not knowing if it was any good, but the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons logo caught my attantion. i bought it and I am very glad i did. The control is very sweet, the ability to pause will become your very best friend. Another good thing about the game is the leangth, i always like long games.

Baldur's Gate introduces a new level of challenge and difficulty. it is by far one of the most challenging, not neccasserily hard games i have ever played.

Well I hope you like the game as much as I.

Hard at first

I loved the story and the looks of this game. The only flaw I've found is that it is a VERY hard game when you start out. Once you get up a level or two, though it evens out and becomes a very engaging game.

There is little I can say that hasn't been said about this game in other reviews. But I can say that before this game I was a casual RPG player, now I am addicted.

Of course there are a few problems with the game and story telling can never be as detailed and emersive as having a real person as a DM (I would guess I never played AD&D, this game kind of makes me wish I had) But all in all this game is the prototype for the next wave of RPGs. Bottom line: If you like RPGs get this I doubt you'll be disappointed.
