When I opened a package from a friend of mine for Christmas 2000 and saw it was Baldur's Gate, I wasn't very enthusiastic. I had played another RPG, and I wasn't very impressed with it. It had no plot, and the graphics stunk. I just assumed all RPG's were like that. So I figured, I've got 20 gb of free space on my drive, and i've got a lot of free time ahead of me, so I figured I might give BG a try, figuring it was probably gonna be really bad.
Was I wrong.
The great story, awesome graphics and sound, and many spells (I love magic stuff) just completely blew my mind. Any serious (or even semi-serious) gamer sould DEFINITLY get this game. It is WELL worth your money.

I've played the game (and beat it) 4 times now and I plan to start a new game soon...It truly is one of the best games out there! It has great graphics, great sound, and great gameplay! I'd recommend to anyone, anywhere.

This game is loooong. I really enjoy long games but this a bit much for me. Of course if I could play more than two or three hours a week.... Things I didn't like: not escaping though cutscenes, not automatically reloading the last quicksave and less 'reputation' comments from your NPCs- Highly recommended and a 'must have' for any RPG fan.
A great game, I play it over an over again :)

When I first picked it up, I thought it would end up just being another throw away.
I WAS WRONG ! fun game, your actions change the story an how others will interact with you. Download a few "add on " utilities for this an you will become a GOD.....lol
I would have given this a 5 but they need to change up that ending a bit......kinda goes to fast. :(

i was totally into the game and finally entering baldur's gate for the first time when i found out that the 5th cd was scrached and every time i entered the city or tried anything on the 5th cd the game would freeze and now i am not able to finish the game. i agree with anybody who says the black isle took little concern in making the cd's work, the first cd had something, i didn't know what it was, the customer service didn't know what it was, and i had to spend almost 15 mintues rubbing my cd with rubbing alcohol to get this...crap ofmy cd and make it run. although the game is great i would not remomend taking the gamble with your money and hope that you get a game with 5 usable cd's, good luck though

This is one of the best RPGs to come around in a long, long time. The story is great, and of coarse, its AD&D, which is the most popular pen and paper RPG ever. The character creating process is pretty good. My only problem is I want to be higher level. I highly recommend this game. If BG2 is going to be even somewhat better than this game, Diablo II really won't even have a chance at RPG of the Year awards.

After years of at best mediocre D+D type games, we are at last given something worthwhile. This is not a simple game, you actually have to pay attention to what you are doing/ being told. The AI control for the characters is a usefull godsend, otherwise you'd be reduced to a babbling idiot trying to control the actions of six characters simultaneously. beautifully done, and the expansion is a lot of fun too!
A false promise but a terrific game.

This game promises to be truly compliant with AD&D rules.
Thats not true! , there are lot of things missing, few levels, few spells (compared to AD&D which is quite large), little interacction with items, environment, that are things important in AD&D.
Still this game is one of the best RPG games ever made, and they tried to follow the AD&D rules, obviously such a compromise was too demanding. (hope they will do a better job with Never Winter Nights)
Storyline is complex and fun, interaction with NPCs is very well made, I wonder How many writers they hired to make such a rich NPC enviroment, Youl never get tired if you talk to NPCs.
Sound and visuals are good, You can easily image yourself walking on the woods, with the sound of the birds, etc etc.
If you are looking forward for games of this type buy it so they can improve the game. Also If you dont want your children to empty their minds with bang, bang games.
Simply the best RPG in a long time

The best fantasy CRPG I've played since I got Realmz for the Macintosh (from Fantasoft- check it out, all Mac fans) It had a few annoying bugs but this probably had more to do with my cobbled-together $300 PC than the Software. Great game.
