Doesn't get any better than this.

If you intend to buy this game, I would like to point out there's an error in the manual. It says To install: 1. Insert the CD. It SHOULD have said: 1. Buy half a year's supply of canned food, quit your job, break up with your girlfriend and ask your mum to look after the cat - just don't make any plans, OK? 2. Insert the CD. This has got everything you'd want from an AD&D game. It's a big campaign with a very large country that it does feel it takes a week to travel across. Just the feeling of this really big area to explore with lots of subplots hiding in the shadow makes this game an all time classic. And with a quite good general plot running through it, it's as close to real roleplaying as it can get. The graphics are average, but you won't notice. This is good!

best game ever

I first saw this game in the store and it looked pretty good. Then my brother borrowed it from a freind and we could not get it to work the cd was scartched so we bought a cd cleanor we were able to load it on then but it kept jamming. Then eventually I decieded to buy it and it was worth it. For one thing it has a great story or plot. The second thing is this is a fantasy rpg which I tend to like and it is hard to find a really good one nowadays. I only have one complaint about it and that is it takes to long to move aroundad, then you have to get used to the battles and the way they package the game is annoying to get through. But other then that it is the best game ever. Oh yeah here is a tip if you buy it don't keep the cds in the cd case they get scratched that way.

Historical

HI, i just had to write a comment. Although the game is getting old, it is the (in my opinion) best story-based singleplayer (multiplay is allowed, but i think the game is more suited for singleplay) ever next to Planescape:Torment. The story is exiting and very nicely made. When you start as a level one character, you fell like experiencing the game fully. There are lots of classes, races and aligments for one to pick, so the roleplaying is superiously splendid. As already expressed, the game is HUGE too, with five CDs.
Baldurs Gate 2 and its expansion is out now. They are very nice, but BG 1 gives an unique experience, and for 20 dollars, it is a very cheap experience too. If you dont like it, remember that it is not a new game. Instead, it is historical.

This is quite possibly the best game ever...

It certainly is the best game I've ever played. I started reading the books, and then I heard about this game coming out, so I thought I'd give it a try, and I love it. I've played it several times through. The variability within characters, quests and areas, and the way the game is setup is absolutely wonderful.

This is an awesome game!!!

This is a great game! It has the best plot and good graphics. You can easily play this game for hours and never get tired of it. Although the graphics cannot be compared to today's, they are still very beautiful and amazing to say the least.

Baldur's Gate is a must-own game for anyone who enjoys role-playing or fantasy games!

Bgate 2 thumbs up!

An exellent game, hands down the best rpg ever made on a PC platform, even beats some of the console platform greats like ff7 and ff3. A MUST HAVE for any pc rpg fan or any AD&D fan, and with the expansion pack, it adds a whole lot more punch to the great game. The ambience and feel to the game is so relaxing and spectacular. The amount of times I came home from school in a crappy mood and played some bgate to relax are countless.

This ones a killer.

The only negative thing in bgate is there are not enough voices to fill all the people in the game (about a good 1 thousand unique characters!) The game itsself is 2.2 gigs on 5 cds. The cd changing in the game can become quite annoying as well.

interesting but very frustrating

I've never played much D&D, so it took a little while to adapt. There are some cool things going on, but it can be very frustrating, because you often don't know that a person or an item is going to be useful. Quest items are not labelled "Quest Items" and if lose 'em before you find out you need them, that sucks. If you finally get near the ending and you don't have the right configuration of character types, potions and weapons, you're out of luck. You've come all this way, and you find that you made a bad decision last week that you can't really overcome at that point.

I have been a gamer ever since I could think enough to be one, and Baldur's gate is quite possibly the very best game in the world today. To be a proper PC gamer, you have to be one who cares not about graphics, or animation stylings, but storyline. A true PC gamer sees the true worth of a game in the emotion which you percieve in playing it, and the true feeling of joy in the playing. GAMING SHOULD NEVER BE A CHORE. That is the thought of a true PC gamer. And this game is a wonder of the PC world. Of all the 30+ pc games, 5 xbox games and 15 gamecube games that I own, few have even begun to give me the same feeling as this, and none have ever completed it. Though this game might not be a graphical wonder, it is a 2-d world that is still more beautiful than any 3-d attempt. This game is bursting with replay value, and is never a bore or a trouble to play. It is my greatest game of all time.

A Decent but Combat Intensive Game

Baldur's Gate has a terrific real time engine, where you get to see everything from what weapon or item your character is wielding to the unique spell effect an image is using. Except for a few bugs easily fixed by a patch, the game's engine is exquisite, and provides the best electronic RPG system that I've seen.

The only flaw for me is the fact that the game is essentially a hackfest. While an epic and intriguing plot is included, the real villain spends most of his time hiding behind his lackeys to the point where, despite a brief appearance at the beginning, you go through 100 hours of dungeons and monsters just to speak to him. There is almost no dialogue or character interaction, and the final few battles turn out to be an exercise in how many monsters you can summon rather than an opportunity to utilize real strategies.

While the combats are entertaining to a point, I prefer more story-intensive games such as Final Fantasy or Planescape: Torment. But at the same time, this game does provide an excellent setup for it's sequel, and Baldur's Gate II improves on everything the original does wrong. If you like combat, or if you want to get the whole saga, you will want to pick up Baldur's Gate.

Is it possible to fall asleep playing a game?

I purchased Baldur's Gate because the graphix looked awesome and I had heard some very positive things about this game from various sources. I was very disappointed. This game takes forever to get to the action. I walked around for days easily slaying enemies, talking to people with lengthy dialogues that I didn't care to read, and got lost way too much for my taste. The battles were pathetic and easily winnable until the final battle where I was slain in a matter of seconds.

The turn-based style of fighting is terrible. Having to control six players gave me a headache. Having a limited number of spells and having to sleep to regain your spells is a very bad idea. The monsters were horible. There were no new monsters as you continue deeper and deeper into the game. There were far too many quests where all you did was walk, maybe slay a weak enemy, then walk a whole lot more to solve the quest. I know this is an rpg, but please, give me some action.

I did like the character generation process and like the ability to build up a character then import it into a new game. I also like being able to dual-class or multi-class characters. I feel this adds something to the game that other rpgs' miss.

I would recommend this game to any AD&D fan because it's the same boring garbage that you guys like. However, if you are an action junkie and really loved Diablo as I did then don't waste your money.

I just wonder why there are not more games in the style of Diablo. I see many trying to copy it, but doing a poor job at this.
