Fantastic

I've never been an RPG fan, but I was drawn to this game by all the hype on the internet. It's every bit as good as I heard! The graphics are beautiful, the interface is easy to use, and it's fun from start to finish (although I got frustrated by the end battles and almost gave up, though I had a stroke of luck and won eventually). I can hardly wait to get Planescape: Torment; it sounds even better than BG. I also hear that BG2's in the works. Sheesh...I'm gonna have to drop out of school and play games full time!

Outstanding!

This is what I always hoped every other RPG I ever bought in my life would be like. Great characters, great storyline, great progression rate, great spells, great action, great side quests (if you choose to follow them).

The best part of this game are the dungeons. Each one is more eery than the last. The battles get very intense especially when you're trying to make it back to the surface for some much needed rest.

The ending is very disappointing considering all the effort it takes just to get there. Despite that the journey itself is very rewarding. Each area you liberate gives you a feeling of accomplishment.

The main drawback is changing the disc for each area. They did this sensibly, but it gets annoying; like if you go the wrong way before you realize you've done so.

This game is excellent. I'm afraid to buy another RPG because it probably won't match up. I never thought a video game would spoil me this way.

Very nice game

Having played both AD&D online and tabletop, it was nice to see a game which actually followed AD & D rules while not sacrificing too much as far as believability of actions. I haven't finished the game yet, but it's held my attention for quite a long time. I rate the game rather highly. That said, here are my major thoughts on it:

Pros:

1. Tons of "subplots" to follow. 2. Different conversational threads with NPCs do actually affect the outcome of encounters - no cheesy scenes where you get along with someone then they try to kill you anyway! 3. The game actually hints at the difficulty levels of some areas. For example, commoners make it clear you do not want to enter Nashkell mines alone at level 1. 4. Some customizability as far as appearance. 5. It's actually interesting.

Cons:

1. If your computer isn't up to par for the DirectX tool, it crashes fairly often - once a half hour or so. 2. There are "hidden" items that are very difficult to find in several places, with no explanation for their presence. For example, a pearl and a very nice set of armor are secreted in a farm field. These things seem to exist so a limited group of people can powergame. 3. Very limited NPC conversation sets. 4. Multiplayer games are, basically, not supported.

If you liked Diablo you will love this game

If you enjoyed the kill and reward system of diablo this game is for you. With lots of surprises and great graphics it will keep you playing into the we hours of the mourning.

One of the best hack-and-slash RPGs ever

As I mentioned in the summary, this game is in the grand style of RPGs, and it even manages to sneak a not embarrassing story line too. The gameplay is a good execution of more-or-less real time, and the mechanics are classic D&D. The main character is customizable, and he/she will meet many other kindred souls who can join you. With the numerous side quests, wide variety of supporting characters, and well-balanced selection of magical trinkets and critters, this game is, I believe, the standard for RPGs.

This Game Deserves WAY More Than 5 Stars!...

I baught this game for the second time, and i was hooked!... i would play this game for at least 8 hours a day, completely neglecting everything not involved with the game, i'm not kidding. And now, the Pros!!!!

1. Excellent story-line, [pulls] you in, puts you in a head lock, and refuses to let you go.
2.Excellent interface, easy to learn, unless you play diablo.
3.The spell system for this game is awesome, tons of spells, a bunch of schools of magic.
4.Vast game!... if you do everything, it totals around 100 hours!...
5.Each character has his/her own personality, and reacts to situations differently(such as when Khalid panics and runs away like a little girl!...)

And, even though it sounds like it's bad, these aren't horrendous, the Cons!...
1.the graphics leave a little to be desired, but if you don't have good gameplay and story, then what good are all the flashy graphics in the world gonna do you?
2. the character movements are a bit jerky, liker they're all descendants of the TinMan.
3.If you misdistribute the thief skills, you can count on missing a lot of goodies that are in locked crates.

Basically, if you want one of the best RPGs ever, based on second edition DandD rules, buy this game. It's a bajillion times better than diablo and it's equally stupid sequal combined. Those games have almost no plot, they are a disappointment to all games, and should be destroyed for even calling themselves RPGs.The plot is awesome to Baldur's Gate, you can do whatever you want, complet a quest, don't complete one, it doesn't matter, but you pay the price. And hey, in what other game can you kill anyone you want, including hookers. And in what other game can you give dead cats to little girls? Huh? If you haven't played it, buy it for the whole 20 dollars they sell it for, and you'll see what i mean. When you beat it, their' an expansion, a sequel, an expansion for the sequel, icewind dale, an expansion for that, and the soon to be released icewind dale 2. All of these games you can import the same guy into. Buy it!...

This game rules! But it favors the fighter class!

This game is a lot of fun. But it is easy to die in thebeginning (especially if your a magic user.) I also imported mycharacter many times before I was able to start kicking some butt. My adivce is to create a fighter, ranger, paladin, or a multi-class fighter/x (x meaning whatever floats your boat.) because you'll get a lot of cool stuff that you'll need. Stay away from dual class because it takes too long for them to develop. Also, a fighter class has the best chance for survival in the beginning and not many NPC's have good overall stats to be a killing machine that you'll need (and trust me, you will need it!) to survive. END

A classic.

If you like RPGs this is a great game. It's dialogue heavy and there are a lot of choices to make. It really immerses you. The combat is pretty fun; pause-and-play style. It's the characters and the story that really makes me like this series.

Too easy to die in the beginning

Baldur's Gate is the best AD&D game to come around in a while, but it drove me absolutely insane for the first few hours. Why? Because in the beginning, there are quite a few people who want you dead...including a few powerful (at least at THAT point) wizards. At low levels, a guy can walk up to you, say "Okay, I'm going to kill you now," and quite suddenly knock you out in 1-2 hits. After a while though, you'll get into it. Man, you have to watch yourself in this game, because there is are deceptive people in *every town!* Lots of characters walk up to you asking for help, and end up being villains! To wrap it up, it's a keeper. (especially the bundled version w/the expansion pack) but don't get discouraged at the beginning, because that's the hardest part. Once you get by that, you'll have a good game with lots of side quests and longitivity.

The Most Addictive RPG Game Ever

I have never been a fan of computer RPG's until Baldur's Gate came along. That is not to say that I have never given any computer RPG's a test drive. Most of them I found to be both boring and very limited. This game is definately an exception to this. BG allows one to create and customize a character and party using the AD&D rules. As an avid fan of the AD&D game, this was a very pleasant surprise. It is my hope that Interplay follows this game up with many add ons like the old AD&D modules. Tales of the Sword Coast is a good start, but much more can be done. It would be great to be able to continue using the same character in a number of adventures in this AD&D world. About the only real complaint I have with this game revolves around the fact that your character can only advance so far before an experience point limit caps them. This is modified somewhat in TSC, but it would be much better to put a limit of 500,000 (instead of 161,000 w/TSC)to allow for continued playability. So, what do you say Interplay?
