I would like to review the game. Unfortunately it appears that the company did not test the game thoroughly. You need to register the CD key that comes with the game. Thanks to their horrible coding and non-existent tech support the key comes up as invalid and you have to send email to their tech support (cheap, they don't even have an 800 number or any number for that matter) first. When they FINALLY grace you with a reply other than some idiotic auto reply you then have to FAX them the invoice from Amazon to prove you bought the thing. This is stupid, disorganized and just plain wrong.
If you want the game that bad... be prepared to wait and wait and wait. I buzzed the news groups and the boards associated with the game and found that this problem is common and so are many others....
How bad can it get

It was really bad the first week, but it did get better. For a few weeks we could play better each day, and in turn see just how boring the game really was.
In the last few weeks they turned around and the game is now worse than it was at release. Each patch is a fingers crossed, heart bumping, breath catching nightmare wondering if just your class or perhaps the entire game will be SNAFU this time around.
FunCom deserves for the entire computer community to group together and put them out of business. I thought Tribes 2 was a horrid release, and then Coroned Rat proved me wrong. Why oh why couldn't AO be at least as good as WWII Online.
Pass on this one, and in fact pass on anything with the FunCom name on it forever.

I honestly wanted to give Anarchy Online a chance. The massively multiplayer genre needs some new blood, and there were some interesting things in this game when it first went live: good graphics, promising character classes, and a sci-fi setting (though really not very 'hard' sci-fi, more like fantasy with some 'futuristic' touches).
However, the developer, Funcom, has demonstrated truly astonishing incompetence and bad faith since the launch of the game. All games of this kind have rocky launches, but don't be fooled: the problems of Anarchy Online go far deeper than a rocky launch. Each patch has actually introduced serious new balance problems and several, including the most recent patch, have reintroduced old bugs and added some new ones. These are not just garden-variety bugs, but game-stopping ones, mind you.
Now Funcom has taken the extraordinary step of shutting down the support bulletin boards at its own site, which is always a sign of imminent disaster in the gaming world. It's the equivalent of a toxically bad film that a movie studio tries to keep away from critics hoping that they can just get one weekend of good box office before the word gets out.
AO's European launch is imminent. If our good friends in Europe have any sense, they'll give this game a wide berth, whatever its price. The sooner Funcom closes the lights on the few remaining players in this flaming wreck of a game, the better. Perhaps they can sell the remnants of their tattered code to a real developer and someday we'll see the game reach its potential. It's a certainty that Funcom itself can't pull it off.
Don't waste your money on this game..

I will never EVER buy a product from funcom EVER again.
This is the WORST developed game I have ever played. It devlievered on nothing it promised. It had horrible crashes for at least 2 months and now they reintroduced even more problems.
Worst of all they have NO customer service. Something goes wrong with your game? Tough! Wait for a patch. No quick fixes and completely moderated forums so you can't even voice your complaints anymore!
I canceled my account and I urge you to never EVER buy this game. That also includes any funcom game including their upcoming MMORPG.
It couldve been so much...

This game has to be one of the biggest let downs. It was so promising but has been let down by poor programing. Also Funcom's idea of customer support is shocking.
I am sorry but I couldnt recoomend this game to anyone in its current state.
*sigh*

Okay, just going to give you the good and the bad... The graphics, gameplay, character creation, settings, missions, are all great. This is what all MMORPGs should aspire to be. Now the bad, and there is a lot of bad. Can only play for around 15 minutes until the server(s) stop responding, or the server crashes, or they take it down for patching, and you lose all the experience you've been acquiring. Once they get it stable, it will be fantastic. Just the frustration is getting to me, but it is good enough for me to keep trying anyway. Again, I would get this as soon as it is stable. Not a moment before. Do not become another tester that will get burned on this, or burned out.
Alright, I'm gonna review this game for what it is...

....
Going onto the topic of graphics, this game is visually stunning. Buff effects are quite pretty, and sunsets are just as beautiful as they are in real life. Players look nice and realistic, and a variety of clothing is available for mixing and matching outfits. (I mean, we need more, but it's still a fairly substantial amount)
If you want to roleplay, this is probably a good choice. I've seen more roleplayers in this game than any other. ...
The game is enjoyable, and that's what matters.
I'd advise you to download the trial. If you know someone who already plays, have them help you get started. You may find it's actually kinda fun. Just play it for what it is, and you may be pleasently surprised.

AO is a beautiful, detailed game of incredible complexity. It encompases the world of Rubi-Ka, a world colonized by humans because of the presence of "notum", a substance that allows a technology so advanced that it seems magical.
On Rubi-Ka, you can play characters of one of four species of human, each with advantages and disadvantages. Your character can be one of many different professions: Soldier, Fixer, Enforcer, Martial-Artist, Meta Physicist, Nano-mage, etc. Gameplay allows for many activities (hunting, exploring the many cities and the countryside, doing static and character-specific missions) and, also, socializing with other players from around the world.
The setting is absolutely gorgeous, with almost none of the annoying cartoonish features of many other MMPORGs. Rendering is nearly flawless.
Many of the complaints seen in other reviews are now fixed. This is a game which the designers are constantly tweaking. The game is not nearly as buggy and prone to crash as it was in the beginning and now has many new, fun features. There are still frustrating aspects to the game, but what masterpiece is without flaws. It is so complex that many of the "problems" are caused by the fact that the limited number of developers are able to work on this many-layered world...sometimes there are unforseen and unintended consequences for the smallest "fix" or new feature. FUNCOM can be frustrating in their response to these problems, but they usually set them right in the long run.
I have played hundreds of hours of this game for the past year. It is a thouroughly enjoyable and addictive passtime. I highly recommend it.
Great MMORPG... for FREE!

This is a great game for a free MMORPG. When it first came out, it was a decent MMORPG (It was all about the Everquest and DAOC back when the game was released). But now, since it's free, everyone should download it and play it. If ya like it then get the expansions and stuff, if you don't then just uninstall it. Very simple. Most of the pros and cons have been said by the spotlight reviewers and I'm just informing the MMORPG fans that doesn't like monthly feesthat this game will be free without any purchase and there will be no monthly fees until I think about end of January 2006. While it's free, I recommend you guys should download and play it. On the other hand, Knight-Online and Runescape is also a great game to check out. While these aren't World of Warcraft or City of Heroes, they are very worth it for free.
