I purchased this game five days ago and I am very pleased with the game overall. The game has a steep learning curve and some performance issues which have driven some gamers away, but I recommend they return.
The Good
- The mission system means there's always something to do when your friends are offline (and you can also do missions with your friends using the team missions or a mission key duplicator)
- The graphics are phenomanal, beautiful sunrises and you can sit on a hill and look out for miles.
- Swimming (I thought that was really cool)
- You can buy planes and cars and fly anywhere in the world (planes are a bit too expensive, though)
- You can travel quickly using "The Grid" (A hacker-movie-esque virtual reality teleportation system)
- Easy to use chat, friends and team features mean you can stay in touch with your friends and go hunting or PvPing with them
- Some of the monsters (eg Brontos) look very cool and there's a lot of attention to detail with graphics.
- Movement prediction means lag is usually not a problem, even if your ping is 1000!
The Bad
- Performance (especially in busy areas) is slow and painful.
- PvP is not very involved, you just press the attack button and sit back.
- Low pings are uncommon.
- The story is more of a Webzine than ingame.
- Missions are repetative.
Very Promising, definite EQ killer

After spending 7 horrendous months on Everquest, Anarachy Online looks to be a saving grace. A completely new, unexplored world awaits. The futuristic setting is very attractive, and, unlike Everquest, this game changes based on PLAYER decisions. Where Everquest falls short, this game prevails. And that is saying ALOT.
I already see Everquest loyalists saying bad things about this game, mainly because they are afraid that their game is going to be wiped out by Anarchy Online. That may very well be so. I definitely call that an act of cowardice. It is best to try this game before you trash it. Everquest is a very dated game, and even the expansion that is coming out this winter, which promises to deliver a complete overhaul to the graphics and gameplay engine, it is still going to fall short.
Anarchy Online is going to end in 4 years. It may be difficult to invest 4 years into a game like this. Personal lives will definitely be affected. However, I will not let this game do that to me. Everquest was very addictive, but i found that reality is more attractive than a fake online game. Nevertheless, Anarchy Online has many qualities that put it above EQ.
The Player decisions will directly affect the game's outcome in 4 years. Game Masters, or GM's, will take the role of important In-Game characters, such as the leader of one of the many factions in the game, and assign certain players with outstanding records with tasks that range from espionage to all out assaults on enemy installations! The inclusion of in-game apartments are a very welcome change from the 'camping' system of Everquest. With your virtual apartment, you have a place to store your hard-earned items and cash, rather than having a very limited bank system as in EQ. There will be many social environments, such as bars and dance clubs where interaction with other players will be crucial and encouraged. There are many weapons to choose from, ranging from hand to hand to firearms. The futuristic setting looks gorgeous and the game is shaping up to be VERY promising. Watch out EQ, it looks like you're about to be kicked off your throne.
DO NOT BUY THIS GAME!

The game has good potential. Too bad it doesn't work, period. It's full of bugs, horrid lag, constant crashing, absolutely no customer service, servers down all the time, loss of exp/items, etc. This game is nowhere near ready. I think it's actually too ambitious for today's technology, certainly Funcom's hardware (like 50,000 people on one server...come on). And contrary to some comments, the patches have not made it better for me or most people I know, in fact it's worse. Save your money and sanity, and do not buy this game.

Anarchy Online is the future of Gaming, there is no doubt about it. I felt like writing a review because I have so much confidence in this game of being the best in its kind surpassing EQ, UO, and AC in all aspects. First of all this game is not all about killing and experience, ya if you want to be stronger and go on quests you will want to fight monsters but in this game you can just stay in your city and party. Dancing going to the bar is very cool and it will appeal to many players who are not into all that fighting and experience gaining. There is great variety in this game also by having many different faces and outfits to show off your creative self. I am going to pre-book this game for sure and I hope to see many of you online!! :)

I was anxious to play this game since the first time I heard of it. However I wasnt able to actually start playing until about a week ago. I havnt been able to put it down since then.
I signed up for their 7 day trial thinking, "what's to loose?" It's an overwhelming experience at first, it taxes my system a bit, but i'm amazed at what depth and special features can be added to your character. Reguardless of what race/profession you choose nearly every character looks unique in a way, and underneath the shiny suits, and power armor there is an even more hand customized internal organ structure.
Being able to modify not only my outward apearance, but also enhance the characters body by adding 3 types of powerups to each limb, truely means to me that no character could really be the same.
You can always jump online if you only have an hour to get a few experience points reguardless of what level you are. It's not a group dependent game, though traveling in a group really rakes in the XP.
Despite my computers underpowering of the game, I havnt been able to stop playing I've made level 26 within my first week of playing.. and it's not going to stop there.. I dont see nearly what all the fuss was about this game being problematic.. There are always issues... but nothings detered me yet!
It's just not there

This game just isn't that fun. First of all: The graphics are the brown matter that belongs in toliets. I bought a brand new Geforce3 graphics card, and the graphics were still horrible, and I have a P3-850 with 1gig ram. After all of that, everything is still choppy and fuzzy at a supposedly 50 fps. Secondly: The gameplay is slow, done before, and drab. The only thing different is that you get to experience this with many many people.
Go buy Ultima Online, or EQ. Even if you wait for this game to get over the bug-ridden hill, the graphics and core gameplay are still horrible.
Hey, go buy a dog, and get a UDC obidence title on it; it'll take the same amount of time as getting a top level AO character, and you'll feel much more fulfilled.
This game now Rocks!!

When this game was first released it was a nightmare! I quit playing after about a month of suffering. I started playing again about 5 months again and IT IS GREAT!! The developers have really worked hard and have improved the games playablity. It is also apparent that they have been listening to the players. Once you begin playing and reading the forums, you'll see the changes they have made and how they really seem to care about the players more than the other current MMORPG's out there. Plus, the response times of GM's and the helpfulness and friendliness they diplay is far superior than in other MMORPGs as well. Trust me! I've played them all! It's really bad having to wait 30 min to 2 hours for a response as I have been told to in the past in other games. All in all this is currently the best MMORPG out there for your money and with the current storyline playing out, it should continue attracting players.
Joy, excitement, loathing and frustration all in one

I first recieved this game back in the summer of 2001 when my friend bought it for me, account and all, as an early birthday present. At the time, I was extremely anxious for the much anticipated Star Wars Galaxies online game (which has still yet to be released) so I figured that Anarchy would prove to be an adequate substitute until Galaxies was released. At first, Anarchy totally blew me away. I was hooked almost immediately. For weeks on end, I played the game, leveling my character, learning new things, finding new areas, discovering new and more powerful weapons. For that summer, the game was a complete blast. It was like a party, everytime I turned it on. Months sooned rolled along, and as they did, my player slowly began to increase in level. By level 30 I was noticing a very subtle change in the game's pace. The change was coming at me from all directions, both in game, and outside. In game, I was just beginning to break through the surface, and beginning to see some of the problems within it. Outside, the developers were constantly changing and reworking the game. Suddenly, I was overwhelmed with patch after patch, supposedly to help make the game better, and more fun to play. It turned out, for me anyway, the game became less enjoyable, and more of a test in patience. Character classes in game were constantly getting downgraded to the point where they were just useless (such as my beloved Agent class). While all the while, enemy AI classes were constantly getting upgraded and more difficult, bugs were continuing to run rampant, and nothing truely new had been added overall to the game's atmosphere. The balance was now shifting, but not between the Omni and Clan facitons, but between consumer (player) and producer (game). Even as people threw up their arms in protest, FunCom developers continued to plug away, seemingly to make the game to better suit them, as opposed to the public they were supposed to be making it for. Things continued to worsen. New and more irritating bugs began to emerge through the endless piles of code. The test in patience had now become a test in tolerance. Patches continued to be released, things continued to worsen, Funcom continued to ignore the public outcry. I finally reached a point where I could no longer take it. Three months ago, I had had it. My character was going absolutely nowhere because frankly there was nowhere to go. Soloing was a complete waste of effort, because of so many bugs and annoyances, such as uber-buffed mobs, and over twinked opposing players. And it didn't seem like there was any effort being made to appease the social gamer, as all there was in the game to keep one motivated, was the prospect of leveling. But never underestimate the power of leveling, for it has fueled (for me anyway) some of the better moments of my in game experiance. But in the end, it really just isn't enough to keep the gamer.
I took a three month hiatus from the game, hoping that at some point in those three months, there would have been some kind of noticable change to the game. I have just recently gone back to playing, and in those three months, and after umpteen patches, the game is still just as frustrating, exciting, loathsome and joyous as it has always been. I still enjoy leveling, but considering that is the only thing to really enjoy, I really have little else to compare it with. I still feel outclassed by ever single mob that I come across, and that frustrates me to no end. However, I have faith...Though little, I still maintain it. This game is enjoyable to an extent, and there is promise that many of the changes that the developers had made in the past will be reworked to (hopefully) make things better finally...
Don't buy this game! It is soooo buggy!

I have been trying to play for the last five days and the servers are constantly crashing. Nothing in the game works properly. You cannot get missions. Doors usually don't work. Most things you try to do are broken. Tech support is non-existant. No one responds to any problems at all. You can send email and be entirely ignored. You will be playing the game and suddenly it will crash. When it crashes it will screw up your data so that you cannot get missions ever again. Without missions there is very little to do except wander around an empty world.
I would give these guys a few weeks, if not months, to get the bugs out of this game before buying it. I paid $55 for the game, and then $35 for a game subscription so I could play online. THat is over eighty dollars. And I have yet to be able to play the game. It doesn't matter what you want to do in-game... You will probably discover it is broken and you can't do it. If it isn't broken right now then it will be soon...
Hopefully they can fix all the problems but right now I recommend waiting... Do anything else but don't PAY to be frustrated by this so-called game!

Terrible release...Spent all of the first trying to install and nothing works. After several of the patches it made the problems worse. DO NOT buy this game until the bugs have been worked out. This game is still in beta.
